ENGLAND HAS A MASSIVE ATHLETE SEX SCANDAL TOO

John Terry's sex scandal

On the heels of Steve Phillips on on the “Today Show” and Tiger Woods in rehab for sex addiction, England has a scandal of their own. John Terry is under fire for an affair he had with a teammate’s girlfriend. Due to the publicity, Terry was stripped of his captaincy of the English national soccer team. And if that wasn’t bad enough, there are more details emerging about his sleeping around and have they may have affected his finances.

The press wasn’t kind to John Terry in 2009. The News of the World essentially set his dad up to broker a cocaine deal. Now, The Daily Mail is reporting the dirt his many affairs:

The disgraced footballer – sacked as England captain last week – is said to have paid the women to prevent them going public about their relationships.

The heavy bill for his extra-marital liaisons has prompted searching questions about £170,000-a-week Terry’s wealth after it emerged that the mortgage on his family home is now far bigger than the £2.75million purchase price of the property.

So now his sex scandal has been combined into a financial scandal. The paper also reports he may have a gambling problem. Terry is said to have offered his mistress, model Veronica Perroncel (who was also the girlfriend of a teammate), between £400,000 to £750,000 not to sell her story. And he isn’t exactly a billion-dollar athlete like Tiger Woods. He makes about £9million a year from his soccer contract plus a £4million contract to endorse Umbro equipment.

Terry has apparently mortgaged his house four times in seven years. The current mortgage is for about £3.95million which is £1.25million more than the purchase price. He’s also said to have sought extra cash by giving an “unofficial tour” of his team’s training grounds and scalping access to his VIP box at Wembley Stadium.

NUTS & BOLTS: SUPER MONDAY EDITION

Everybody knows by now that the Saints won the Super Bowl, so let’s get to the real stuff…celebrity appearances and commercials!

Brad Pitt, Ashton Kutcher, his baby-sitter, Demi Moore, LL Cool J, and Scientologists, Tom Cruise and John Travolta were all spotted at the big game. (Union-Tribune)

Phillies slugger Ryan Howard has now attended pro sports’ last 2 championship games. This time, as an extremely large observer. Who’s his friend though? (Bossip)

Kissing Suzy Kolber has the rundown of what you missed in Miami this week. Girls in bikinis, beach football, and of course, a guy with a tramp stamp. (KSK)

Girlfriends and casual observers all around the country were treated to what they know as “hilarious commercial day”. It was a relatively weak showing this year (due to the economy?) but the highlight of the night was when my friend’s sister was literally (and hilariously) moved to tears by Google’s contribution, which received a grade of “B” here. (Fang’s Bites)

The biggest actual football story of the day might be about the brass pair of balls on Saints coach, Sean Payton, who called for an onside kick to start the second half. (Shutdown Corner)

Prior to the game, ESPN wanted to know who fans thought was the best “One ring” QB of all time was. Peyton Manning was on the list. He still is. (ESPN)

Bengals linebacker Rey Mualuga is checking himself into the Betty Ford rehab center in California after a DUI arrest last week. (National Football Post)

SI’s Jon Heyman must be some kind of outlaw. He believes that NYC’s gun control laws should not be enforced as long as a celebrity/star athlete is the one being charged. Stick to baseball, Jonny. (Twitter/Jon Heyman)

So not only is Mike Milbury the “Isiah Thomas” of NHL general managing, but he’s a tough guy around bloggers who call him out for being wrong. This could make for a long feud between Milbury and bloggers, because Mike is going to be wrong quite often. (Gunaxin)

Academic scandal at Florida State has altered the records of a few teams, including Bobby Bowden’s ‘06 – ‘07 football squad. (KC Star)

CHUCK DALY WAS THREATEND BY A CRAZY PERSON

Chuck Daly

As a Pistons fan, I have to respect the legacy of Chuck Daly. He’s almost the last “real” coach the franchise has had other than Larry Brown’s two-and-done and the Rick Carlisle/Flip Saunders years. But apparently, one Cavaliers fan wasn’t so high on Daly. The AP reports that the FBI investigated a “series of threatening letters” sent to Daly from 1989-90.

Back, then the Pistons were the “Bad Boys” and were actually very good. The team included Isiah Thomas, Joe Dumars, Bill Laimbeer, and the human formerly known as Dennis Rodman. They were hated for their physical style of play. A Cavaliers fan must’ve shared that sentiment because he mailed a number of threats from Cleveland and Royal Oak, Michigan. Here are a few excerpts from the letters:

“God made me realize that YOU, not Laimbeer, Mahorn or any of the others are the one possessed by (Satan),” the author wrote in the one-page handwritten letter addressed to “Mr. Chuck Daly.”

Another letter, this one typewritten and postmarked Royal Oak, Mich., on Feb. 16, 1990, also was addressed to Daly and claimed the Pistons didn’t “know the meaning of the word ‘sportsmanship’” and would “pay dearly.”

I can pretty much picture Steve Buscemi writing that then putting some lipstick on while he strokes his rifle. Daly must not’ve been fazed by the threats because Joe Dumars said that he’d “never heard of them.”

GALLERY: MARISA MILLER’S MIAMI SUPER BOWL WEEKEND

It’s not easy being Marisa Miller. The leggy beauty was in Miami this weekend. While she got to enjoy the sun, she was also hustling from venue-to-venue all weekend. So we rounded up the photos of the lovely model.

On Friday, Miller hit up the AXE Lounge at Fontainebleau Miami. Her Saturday began with the DirecTV Celebrity Beach Bowl (other participants included Olivia Munn and bad ass actors Aaron Paul and C.S. Lee). Then later that night it was party time. Miller attended both the Maxim Party at The Raleigh and also made an appearance at the NFL owner’s party. I’m sure that both were equally lame.

You can check out 64+ pictures of Miller’s party weekend after the jump.

CARRIE PREJEAN IS ENGAGED TO NFL QB KYLE BOLLER

Carrie Prejean is engaged to Kyle Boller

From the world of superior genes and inferior results comes the union of Carrie Prejean and Kyle Boller. The 22-year-old beauty queen and model is now engaged to the backup quarterback. Prejean agreed to marry Boller when he popped the question on Sunday in San Diego.

Apparently Prejean and Boller met last year “while Carrie was dealing with her sex tape and nude photo woes.” You know, directly after Michael Phelps hit it and quit it. It is reported that there has been no venue chosen for the wedding. Not that you actually cared. I smell reality show!

PHIL IVEY HAS $2 MILLION ON THE COLTS TO WIN

The last time we talked about Phil Ivey and the sportsbooks it was because he’d made the final table in the World Series of Poker. Ivey had 20:1 odds to make the final table, which he did, and made bettors a lot of money. This time around, Ivey is making news for putting a couple million dollars on the Colts.

Matt Youmans reports that Phil Ivey is rumored to have placed a $2 million moneyline bet on the Colts with Billy Walters. Indianapolis currently sits at about -200 to win the game which means Ivey and Walters stand to win about 2/3 of a million dollars on the wager. Apparently Walters is a legendary sports bettor who was a member of The Computer Group.

MGM Mirage sports book director Jay Rood told Youmans, “We took a seven-figure bet on the Colts money line.” It is also reported that a sports gambler from South Florida named Adam Meyer has been approved for a $1 million bet at the M Resort.

CIRCUS CATCH: 13-YEAR-OLD QB COMMITS TO USC

Lane Kiffin must love being in the headlines. The USC head coach made waves on the day after National Signing Day when he garnered the commitment of a 13-year-old. David Sills has verbally committed to attend USC and he’s not even in high school.

There’s been buzz about Sills for at least a year now. Back in February of 2009, CBS Sports reported that Sills, then a sixth grader, was being monitored by various colleges. He had even received a questionnaire from UCLA all the way back in 2008. He was 11 at the time.

Sills has been mentored by quarterback coach Steve Clarkson since he “discovered” the kid when Sills was about 10. You may have heard Clarkson’s name before because he has also tutored Jimmy Clausen, Terrelle Pryor, and Matt Barkley along with Ben Roethlisberger Matt Leinart, and Matt Cassel. It’s probably not a coincidence that three of his clients attended USC, the school that Sills says he will attend, while Clausen chose Notre Dame over the Trojans. Clarkson’s other incredibly young clients include M.C. Poe (Nashville), Nick Heras (Boston), and Kelly Hilinski (Claremont, CA).

When the CBS article was published, Sills was only described as being 5′8″. Clarkson now says that he comes in around six feet tall. Apparently Clarkson met with Lane Kiffin to review the recruits from this year. That’s when Clarkson started pimping out one of his youngest ho’s. Once Kiffin saw the tape, he called Sills’ family to pitch them.

Now, Sills is verbally committed to attend USC. His father said that it’s always been his dream school. Sills is expected to be on campus starting in 2015 after he graduates from high school. There’s about a 10% chance that Lane Kiffin will be his coach at that point.

BE-DEVILED: DEVILS LANDS STAR WINGER KOVALCHUK

The Devils made one of the biggest trades in recent NHL history when they landed Ilya Kovalchuk. The Russian currently boasts the third-highest points per game average among active players. The Devils sent a package that included Niclas Bergfors, Johnny Oduya, Patrice Cormier, and a first round pick.

Even if this is a half-season rental, the Devil got a pretty good deal. It’s tough to give up Oduya but the rest of the players sent are more than reasonable. Niclas Bergfors had been seeing less playing time as he was in the middle of a scoring slump. At the same time, Patrice Cormier is currently indefinitely suspended for a vicious elbow he launched in the juniors. The move should provide an immediate scoring boost for the Devils.

Long-term, the Devils may have a decent shot at re-signing Kovalchuk. Oduya accounts for a $3 million cap hit while Bergfors came in at $500,000. The Devils will come in at only $41.1 million with the contracts they have in place for next year. While they can fit Kovalchuk under the cap, they may have to decide between him and scheduled unrestricted free agent Paul Martin. Martin makes $4.5 million this year and is probably due for a raise. Other than Kovalchuk, the Devil’s actually have a top-heavy predicament with their forwards’ contracts. New Jersey has seven forwards that make more than $2.5 million this year and all of them are under contract for 2010-2011.

GALLERY: KELLY BROOK JUST WANTS TO DANCE

It’s been a while since we’ve been able to post about Kelly Brook. That’s probably because it’s winter in England and she hasn’t taken a vacation recently. It’s quite depressing. We do have good news though. Brook appeared on the Stricly Come Dancing Tour (basically Dancing with the Stars) and we’ve got photos and a video of that.

Brook originally appeared on the dancing game show back in 2007. She withdrew from the competition in week nine though. She later went on to participate in the Strictly Come Dancing Christmas Special 2008 where she finished second. Her partner was this guy who looks like a hyper-gay version of Shepard Smith. Riveting stuff, I know. It looks like she has a new partner in these recent images. Apparently his name is Matthew Cutler and he looks like Siegfried from Siegfried and Roy.

You can check out 8 images of Kelly plus the video of her performance after the jump.

RENT-A-RUSSIAN: 7 NHL TEAMS VYING FOR KOVALCHUK?

Ilya Kovalchuk is a dominant offensive player and he might not be a member of the Thrashers for much longer. Atlanta GM Don Waddell has informed Kovalchuk that he will probably be traded in the near future. If the Thrashers move Kovalchuk, it would be one of the biggest trades in recent memory.

Kovalchuk is a legitimate offensive star. He has 615 points in 594 career games including 328 goals. The only two active players who have averaged more points per game in their career are Dany Heatley and Teemu Selanne. However, there are also a couple of a reasons not to deal for the Russian. His defensive effort is suspect and he’s currently in the last year of his contract. Kovalchuk has already declined an extension from the Thrashers that would have paid him around $10 million per year. He’s rumored to be seeking close to the league maximum of $11.2 million a season.

Even so, there are a number of teams bidding for his services. TSN reports that the Chicago Blackhawks, Boston Bruins, Philadelphia Flyers, Calgary Flames, New Jersey Devils, Los Angeles Kings and New York Rangers have all expressed interest in Kovalchuk. Those teams have been told that Atlanta wants “one top six forward, one top four defenceman and a prospect or high end draft pick” in return for their star. Considering the price to get him and the price to keep him, it will be interesting to see how this plays out.

Pundit Larry Brooks thinks that the Thrashers’ asking price for Kovalchuk is “absurd.” Brooks thinks the deal would be Marc Staal or Michael Del Zotto plus Ryan Callahan or Brandon Dubinsky. The other potential deal could be Dubinsky plus a prospect and a first round draft pick. While the price is steep, it doesn’t seem “absurd.” The talent is worth parting with if Kovalchuk is more than just a rental. Though, it would seem like the Rangers would have to try to dump more salary to make it work.

If the Rangers still want a superstar, they should go after Kovalchuk. Not too long ago they were rumored to be seeking Vincent Lecavalier whose contract pays him just about $8 million per year. Yes, it will be a nightmare to try and fit Gaborik, Lundqvist, Drury, and Kovalchuk under the cap. But that’s a risk worth taking if the Rangers think they can sign him to an extension. In reality, each of those guys except Drury is worth the money. So the problem isn’t really the money that Kovalchuk will make anyway. It’s not like other teams don’t have similar situations. Just look at the big money players that the Red Wings and Penguins fit under the cap.
