Even in May, we still knew that the Yankees could win the AL East. Around that time, Chien Ming Wang was imploding, Mark Teixeira was ice cold, and ARod was just coming back. What a difference a few weeks can make. For at least a month, the Yankees have been the undisputed “team to beat” in the media. Going head-to-head with the Sox, Boston had a chance to clinch a playoff spot while the Yankees could secure the AL East.
On Sunday, they finally locked up the AL East by completing a sweep of the Red Sox in the Bronx. The Yankees celebrated with a combination of beer, bubbly, and an interesting selection of waterproof eyewear. Joba Chamberlain appeared to wear ski goggled whereas CC Sabathia opted for the swimmer variety. Mark Teixeira was spotted with a brew in his hand while Swisher double-fisted with bottles of champagne.
I think my favorite picture is the Spanish-speaking crew above. The runner up has to be awkward Alex Rodriguez getting showered in booze by the Latino buddies. Then after that it’s a close eomptition between Swish-a-licious and Joe Girardi getting beer dumped on his head. Hopefully, there’s more champagne in the future for the Yankees.
