The Yankees bullpen, which had been a strength all year, allowed the Angels to stage a late inning comeback. The Yankees need to win one of two games to reach the World Series.
Last night, the Yankees had a six-run seventh inning on the strength of a Mark Teixeira base-clearing double, Matsui RBI single, and Cano two-run triple. A.J. Burnett was in position to win in the 7th before he allowed Jeff Mathis to single and then walked Erick Aybar. Damaso Marte and Phil Hughes combined to give up three runs before Maicer Izturis struck out swinging.
The Yankees had a chance to tie in the 9th but loaded the bases to no avail. Nick Swisher popped out to end the game. One has to wonder if A.J. should have been lifted after the 6th inning. After the game, Burnett said that he felt like he “let the team down.”
