New York football fans have to be pleased. After two weeks, the Giants and Jets have both proven that they have top notch squads. There are still many questions that need to be answered before either team is handed a playoff spot. But things seem to be falling into place. Below are a few highlights from the gridiron giddiness that’s taking over New York:
SUPER MARIO
Mario Manningham was mashing the turbo button all night against the Cowboys. His impressive play has drawn rave reviews from Giants staffer Keenan McCardell. McCardell worked with Manningham during camp and emphasized his quickness as a weapon. It’s paid off since the former Michigan receiver victimized Terence Newman and the Dallas secondary all night. Rotoworld notes that Manningham has unofficially broken seven tackles for an extra 58 yards in two games. Last year, Domenik Hixon led Giants receivers with 11 broken tackles for 56 yards over the course of the entire season.
JETS RIDING HIGH
FanHouse posted yet another article praising Mark Sanchez. This time, it was because he’s an “overgrown child.” But they meant that in a good way. I’d be happy too if I were a 22 year old on the verge of stardom in New York City with $30 million in the bank. Here’s the quote from Jerricho Cotchery:
“When you catch a long pass 30, 40 yards down the field, you’re not used to seeing your quarterback right there in your face when you get up,” Cotchery said Monday. “I’m like, ‘What happened? Did you throw it and start running after it right away?’ “
It’s true… but I’m sure I can find the same article about Brett Favre. Sanchez will certainly face adversity as the season goes on. However, he’ll always have the stingy Jets D backing him. Kerry Rhodes spoke to ESPN New York and highlighted the new winning attitude in the Jets locker room. Here’s how he described the atmosphere after the victory:
“Ten minutes after, like I said, it was calm. It was a big win for us. We were very happy after the game at the time but once we got back to the locker room we knew it was just 1 game with 14 more to go. You can only celebrate in the NFL for only a couple of minutes because you got to get back to focus and get ready for the next game. That’s where we were.”
And, of course, he was forced to compliment Darrelle Revis. Rightly so.
