This past Sunday was not a good day for top picks Matthew Stafford and Mark Sanchez. Both rookies came into Sunday riding high after big victories. Last week, Stafford and the Lions snapped a 19-game slide with a win at home against the Skins. In New York, Sanchez had orchestrated a victory against the Titans to push the Jets to 3-0. However, Sanchez and Stafford both ended up taking a step backwards this week.
SANCHEZ SUFFERS TURNOVER WOES
Sanchez and the Jets were on the road in New Orleans. Sanchez never seemed to get comfortable and hurt the Jets with two costly turnovers for touchdowns. Darren Sharper picked off a pass and returned it 99 yards for a TD. Later, Sanchez was also stripped in the end zone which was recovered for a score. The Jets rookie ended the game with four turnovers and no scores.
STAFFORD SIDELINED BY KNEE INJURY
Matthew Stafford had his first game without an interception last week against Washington. He only threw one pick this week against the Bears, but his effort was cut short by an injury. In the fourth quarter, a hit by Adewale Ogunleye dropped the number one overall pick. He quickly grabbed his right knee and did not return to the game. Early speculation out of Detroit says that Stafford may have briefly dislocated the knee. Coincidentally, that could be similar to the kneecap dislocation that Mark Sanchez suffered in college. Sanchez missed three games with the injury.
