The United States Men’s National Team entered its match against Costa Rica with heavy hearts. Just yesterday, they learned that they’d be without Charlie Davies for at least a year.
Predictably, they didn’t start well and faced a two goal deficit at the half. They could only manage one goal in the second 45 and only had five minutes of stoppage time to salvage points. In the 95th minute, Jonathan Bornstein headed home the tying goal with second left in the game.
Even though USA qualified for the World Cup earlier in the week, the game still had significance. The tie meant that Honduras automatically qualified for the World Cup Finals instead of Costa Rica. Now, Costa Rica must face Uruguay in a two-game playoff.
Even with the comeback, the results weren’t all good. The USMNT lost another key player to injury when Oguchi Onyewu went down. The defender suffered a torn patella tendon and could miss 3-4 months.
