The NHL Awards were last night in Las Vegas. I’m sure your reaction falls into one of two categories: don’t care or didn’t know. That’s because the NHL is a poorly run entertainment business. Alexander Ovechkin won his second consecutive Hart Trophy (League MVP). Much to Gary Bettman’s dismay, the hard-living Ovechkin is the best hockey player in the world. Watching him, it’s obvious that he is one of the most dangerous players to ever touch the ice (post on that to come later this month). I couldn’t find many pictures from the events because the NHL is absolutely horrible at PR.
In the picture below, Alexander the Great is pictured with two showgirls. Not pictured are the six hookers getting drunk on champagne in his limo that’s waiting outside. I’ve made two blog posts today and mentioned hookers twice. I’m batting 1.000, baby. Also, my two blogs posts have been about the NHL. For that, I apologize.

Ovechkin has the smile only a hooker could love
What happened at the NHL Awards? Well, I read a hilarious pre-event headline that said “Robin Thicke and Chaka Khan among star headliners of 2009 NHL Awards”. And yes, it is confirmed that Chaka Khan (what the hell) and Robin Thicke (really? REALLY?) performed. Nickelback was what I expected and probably would been more acceptable even though they’re horrible. They’re not a better band but they’re slightly less — ahem — pussy.
The only “stars” (other than booked talent) that showed up was Kevin Connolly (who is definitely not a star), Tricia Helfer, and William Fichtner (who is hilariously signing an autograph in a picture below). Jerry Bruckheimer was there, but that’s only because he’s trying to get an NHL team in Vegas. It was a real “Who’s that?” affair. As I told my buddy John, what sports has a “show” for their awards? Second, if you’re going to have a “show” you need to get “coverage”. ESPN hasn’t even mentioned the fact that the NHL handed out their MVP award last night. Oh well. Here are the rest of the pics from the not-so-eventful event:
