BILL PARCELLS IS A FRIEND OF THE HOMELESS

bill_parcells_homeless_man

Bill Parcells seems like a fiery guy that might be a bit misanthropic. Apparently, he’s a pretty nice dude though. We learned that earlier this year in his dealings with Ricky Williams. Now, there’s a story out of Palm Beach that Parcells has befriended a random homeless man.

The man’s name is John Schoen and he spends his days panhandling and used to newspapers to Parcells. Schoen usually sets up shop on the corner of U.S. 1 and 17th Street Causeway and occasionally catches the Dolphins’ head honcho. The two men typically discuss football, baseball, horse racing, and the stock market. According to Schoen, religion and politics are off limits.

Big Tuna isn’t a good guy for simply humoring a down-on-his-luck man. Schoen professes to be a huge Philadelphia Eagles fan and made that clear to Parcells. But the Dolphins VP did more than just listen. He got the homeless man an Eagles shirt and hat that came with a personal note from Philadelphia head coach Andy Reid. Later, he even bought Schoen tickets to three Dolphins games along with a Dolphins hat. Schoen apparently declined $150 for his seats to the Dolphins/Ravens playoff game.

I’ve always been a fan of Big Tuna’s no nonsense approach to the game. While other teams are busy trying to conjure up schemes, Parcells is always busy cultivating a culture of professionalism and effort. It just seems like he’s a better man than a football coach — and that may be why he succeeds.

Editor’s Note: Originally, I had planned on this post being funny. It didn’t work out that way. Apologies.

BILL PARCELLS PASSES THE GREEN TO RICKY WILLIAMS

56398613

It’s not secret that I love Ricky Williams. I truly believe that the only reason he won’t be in the Hall of Fame is because he lost his passion for football. Well, Ricky has that fire back. He’s undergone major life changes to get himself back on track. People are noticing too. Bill Parcells must respect his dedication because he offered Ricky an extension in a most unusual way:

Last May 21, on Williams’ birthday, Parcells walked by as Dolphins players stretched on the practice field and handed Williams a birthday present in the form of a folded-up yellow Post-it note.

“Tell me what you think,” is all Parcells said while walking on.

Williams glanced quickly at the note, but it wasn’t until later, after practice, that he unfolded it and weighed its minimalist message: “2010 — $4.35 million.”

“I went, ‘Wow,’” Williams says.

That must be the most casual contract extension in pro sports history. No agent. No meeting. No demand. No negotiation. No announcement. Nothing but one old pro showing an appreciation for another old pro.

Parcells offered Ricky a straight up $1 million raise. The $4.35 million mark is also about twice the amount Ricky was paid for his services the year he led the league in rushing (2002). Oh yeah, Ricky also plans to release a documentary about his life that’s been in the works since 2005. With a budding massage therapy career, a documentary in progress, and a hefty raise, Ricky Williams is off and running.
