PURPLE JESUS: PRINCE TAKES IN THE VIKINGS GAME

prince_vikings_game3

Prince is well-known for his music, ridiculous hair, and flamboyant style. But outside of Dave Chappelle’s basketball skit, he’s not really known for being a sports guy. Well, Prince is actually a bigger fan than most people know. He’s been spotted at Lakers and Knicks games in the past and also has been rumored to attend Twins games occasionally.

This weekend, the artist currently known as Prince marked the Metrodome off his “to do” list. Prince took in the Vikings demolition of the Bears from a luxury box. Apparently, it’s not Prince’s first time supporting the Vikings. His fans note that he used to rock a Randy Moss jersey back in the day:

Prince has always been a fan of the Vikings. Back when Moss was here he sported a Moss Jersey with purple tights and white boots with a white had at a Paisley Party.

Unfortunately, he may have retired that outfit.  The FOX announcers even went so far as to highlight Prince with the telestrator. He positioned himself adjacent to the coffee machine and a massive bottle of wine. Prince was also joined by Larry Graham, who was the played bass in Sly and the Family Stone. Graham is the guy decked out in the Adrian Peterson jersey. You can check out a few more shots of Prince at the game plus one of Larry Graham in a purple suit after the jump.

REX GROSSMAN’S DAD SEZ BLAME BEARS NOT CUTLER

Bears 49ers Football

The Bears have always struggled to find a quarterback. They thought they’d landed their franchise QB when they dealt for Jay Cutler. A little over halfway into the season, the results have been subpar.

Jay Cutler has thrown 14 touchdowns compared to 17 interceptions this year. The former Vanderbilt quarterback also has four multi-pick games. Clearly, Cutler has to be frustrated with his play. But the father of former Bear’s signal caller Rex Grossman might be even more peeved. Here’s what Dan Grossman told the Chicago Tribune:

“It’s a self-perpetuating problem that is not Jay Cutler’s fault,” said Dan Grossman, who played quarterback at Indiana in the ’60s. “It’s not Rex Grossman’s fault. It’s not Kyle Orton’s fault. It’s not every other quarterback who has been through that system’s fault. It’s the fault of the organization for not understanding what a quarterback needs.

“What’s amazing to me is, here we go again with Jay Cutler. He came in and he was going to be the franchise quarterback and lead the Bears. I heard some people say they were going to the Super Bowl this year. And here we are, back in the situation where … because the team is not really built around a passing game, he has struggled. I don’t really blame it on Jay Cutler.

“You know who I feel worse for? I feel worse for the Cutler family because I know how hard it was on our family. We are a very proud family. We’re not going to whine to anybody and we’re not going to cry about it. But we’re human. It’s hard to go through that, especially after you had such high expectations.

Grossman went on to say that Lovie Smith’s run-first mentality has taken a toll on the passing game. That seems a bit misguided considering Cutler is third in the league in pass attempts with 39.1 per game. Conversely, Chicago is 30th in the league in rushing attempts with 22.3 per game. While the Bears may be to blame, Cutler has always had a tendency to turn the ball over. The guy has only managed to get through 12 out of 46 career games without throwing a pick.

CEDRIC BENSON SEZ HE GOT BLACKBALLED

58503518

Cedric Benson is among the NFL leaders in rushing this year. Before that, he had been considered a bust after being drafted fourth overall by the Bears in the 2005 draft. Benson couldn’t quite put it together after finishing as the 6th ranked rusher in NCAA history.

Last year, Cedric’s situation improved when he signed with the Bengals. However, he’s taken the Stephon Marbury approach to his old team. Benson believes that the Bears started rumors about his lack of work ethic and said he was a prima donna. The former Texas running back says he would have signed earlier had the Bears not engaged in a smear campaign.

Maybe that happened. Or it could be the fact that Cedric sold his Chicago house when he had issues negotiating his rookie contract. Then his alcohol-related mistakes made him look “Ricky Williams crazy.” Clearly, he never really met expectations when he was on the Bears. Hey, he wouldn’t be the first Texas running back with a long road to success. Ricky Williams was a bust before breaking out as the NFL’s leading rusher on the Dolphins. Similarly, Priest Holmes was an undrafted free agent before (temporarily) setting the NFL record for touchdowns in a season.

LINEMAN WON’T FACE FELONY FOR ATTACKING TEAMMATE

Bears Minicamp Camp

Lance Louis doesn’t like jokes. Especially jokes that involve poking. His teammate at San Diego State poked him with a stick during a team meeting. Louis then attacked him breaking his cheekbone and eardrum while also giving him a concussion. Louis, now on the Chicago Bears, no longer faces a felony charge for assaulting the SDSU safety.

DESMOND CLARK HAS A FIELD DAY

56328214

Desmond Clark thinks that Soldier Field sucks. The Bears tight end took the time to affirm comments he made about the field to the Chicago Sun-Times. Clark says that the turf surface is horrible and the grounds crew even painted a “C” in the wrong place on the 50 yard line. Oops. Opposing players have even referred to the field as a “cow pasture.”

Via Chicago Sun-Times:

Tight end Desmond Clark said he’ll let his blog comments about Soldier Field’s poor playing surface stand.

Clark, entering his seventh season with the Bears, didn’t have anything to add to the remarks he made Sept. 4, one day after the team finished the preseason with a game against the Cleveland Browns at the stadium run by the Chicago Park District.

The turf was chewed up, and it was visible where the grounds crew had originally painted the ”C” at the 50-yard line in the wrong place.

”It was not always this way until the last couple of years when they revamped it by adding a synthetic grass that is woven in with the real grass,” Clark wrote. ”Some of our opponents’ comments: ‘[You] play on a cow pasture.’ ‘This is the [worst] field in the league.’ ‘What the hell is going on with this field.’ These are a few comments that come to mind.

”What the hell is the park [district] of [Chicago] doing when it comes to taking care of this field? They have to resod the whole field before we play Pittsburgh, which will lead to loose turf.”

Fifty-two Bears players responded to an NFLPA survey on the condition of playing surfaces in the league last year and ranked Soldier Field as the worst natural- grass surface in the league. Overall, Soldier Field ranked fourth-worst among all natural-grass surfaces in the leaguewide survey.

”I already said enough,” Clark said Monday. ”I can’t beat it to death. I beat it to death on the blog.”
