RENT-A-RUSSIAN: 7 NHL TEAMS VYING FOR KOVALCHUK?

Ilya Kovalchuk is a dominant offensive player and he might not be a member of the Thrashers for much longer. Atlanta GM Don Waddell has informed Kovalchuk that he will probably be traded in the near future. If the Thrashers move Kovalchuk, it would be one of the biggest trades in recent memory.

Kovalchuk is a legitimate offensive star. He has 615 points in 594 career games including 328 goals. The only two active players who have averaged more points per game in their career are Dany Heatley and Teemu Selanne. However, there are also a couple of a reasons not to deal for the Russian. His defensive effort is suspect and he’s currently in the last year of his contract. Kovalchuk has already declined an extension from the Thrashers that would have paid him around $10 million per year. He’s rumored to be seeking close to the league maximum of $11.2 million a season.

Even so, there are a number of teams bidding for his services. TSN reports that the Chicago Blackhawks, Boston Bruins, Philadelphia Flyers, Calgary Flames, New Jersey Devils, Los Angeles Kings and New York Rangers have all expressed interest in Kovalchuk. Those teams have been told that Atlanta wants “one top six forward, one top four defenceman and a prospect or high end draft pick” in return for their star. Considering the price to get him and the price to keep him, it will be interesting to see how this plays out.

Pundit Larry Brooks thinks that the Thrashers’ asking price for Kovalchuk is “absurd.” Brooks thinks the deal would be Marc Staal or Michael Del Zotto plus Ryan Callahan or Brandon Dubinsky. The other potential deal could be Dubinsky plus a prospect and a first round draft pick. While the price is steep, it doesn’t seem “absurd.” The talent is worth parting with if Kovalchuk is more than just a rental. Though, it would seem like the Rangers would have to try to dump more salary to make it work.

If the Rangers still want a superstar, they should go after Kovalchuk. Not too long ago they were rumored to be seeking Vincent Lecavalier whose contract pays him just about $8 million per year. Yes, it will be a nightmare to try and fit Gaborik, Lundqvist, Drury, and Kovalchuk under the cap. But that’s a risk worth taking if the Rangers think they can sign him to an extension. In reality, each of those guys except Drury is worth the money. So the problem isn’t really the money that Kovalchuk will make anyway. It’s not like other teams don’t have similar situations. Just look at the big money players that the Red Wings and Penguins fit under the cap.

VIDEO: BRIAN ELLIOTT’S STICK SAVE OF THE YEAR

Brian Elliott is a thief. He literally stole an easy goal from Marian Hossa that would’ve cut the lead in half. Instead, Elliott made an absurd stick save to deny the Blackhawks winger.

Elliott was behind his net the retrieve a dump-in when he was forced into the duty. Somehow, the puck kicked out right in front of the net. Sure-handed Marian Hossa was waiting in front and had a chance to bury and easy goal. That’s when Elliott dove from the side of the net and turned away the shot with his stick. The Ottawa goalie’s paddle deflected the puck inches wide of the left post.

VIDEO: DATSYUK DAZZLES WITH DIRTY SHOOTOUT GOAL

Pavel Datsyuk Chip/Changeup Shootout Goal Against Antti Niemi

Pavel Datsyuk is known for his nifty stick-handling skills. He’s also excellent in shootouts. But he may have outdone himself with a recent move on Antti Niemi.

The Red Wings took the Blackhawks to a shootout on NBC’s Sunday Afternoon Hockey Only In the Second Half of the Season and Playoffs — or whatever they’re calling it now. Tied at 3-3, Pavel Datsyuk stepped up as the first shooter. He then unleashed an off-speed “chip shot” over the Blackhawks goalie. The execution is beautiful: Datsyuk dekes right, pulls the puck back, and then tosses it over the sprawling Niemi.

Apparently, Datsyuk may have borrowed the move from Swedish player Linus Omark. It’ll be interesting to see if he brings the move out again any time soon.

NHL STAR PATRICK KANE PARTIED WITH PLAYBOY ON NYE

Hugh Hefner Playboy Book Release Party

Does Patrick Kane like to party? We’d guess that the answer is yes. If you don’t remember, he’s the guy who (allegedly) punched a cabbie over a small dispute in his fare.

Kane continued his partying ways by hitting up a Playboy New Year’s Eve party at the Hilton in Chicago. I say “a” rather than “the” Playboy party because there was a better party going on at the Mansion. In any case, the random Chicago promoters that paid for the random Chicago version of the party got Patrick Kane to show up. Chicago Tribune writer Luis Arroyave attended the event and spotted Kane along with Adam Burish and possibly Brent Seabrook.

The event was hosted by newly minted February 2010 Playmate Heather Rae Young. Unfortunately, they had her dress up in the generic blank tank top with silver sequin rabbit head design (pictured below). I hate it when they make the girls wear generic Playboy gear as opposed to evening wear — but there’s almost no other way that regular people would realize they’re “famous.”

Tickets to the event were $165 for regular admission and $225 for VIP admission. The party promoters even “decided to ” (read: were paid to) set up a video game station in the VIP area where patrons could play with the girls. Rapper Pitbull performed after midnight before the crowd started to disperse. I’m guessing because there was no news about this event that most of the athletes on hand were well-behaved. Too bad.

BLACKFACE A BLACK EYE FOR BLACKHAWKS?

adam_burish_dennis_rodman_patrick_kane_scottie_pippen

It’s almost 2010 and calling other people racist has never been more popular. It’s almost as if “concerned citizens” are competing to see who can be the most outraged the most often. Julia Keller of the Chicago Tribune decided to show off her elite level of intellectualism by writing a piece that’s indirectly critical members of the Chicago Blackhawks for their Halloween costumes.

Keller wrote a thought-provoking superficial piece about Adam Burish and Patrick “Punched A Cabbie In The Face” Kane who dressed up as Dennis Rodman and Scottie Pippen for Halloween (above via No Spain No Gain). These guys might be racists! Nevermind the fact that they wear jerseys every other night with a cartoon Native American man on the chest. That’s different, right? She must be up on her current events because she also dropped mentions of Bob Griese’s “taco comment” about Juan Pablo Montoya, Drew Gooden’s alleged homophobic slur, and Larry Johnson’s f-bomb incident. Keller attempts to use these incidents, culminating in Burish and Kane dressed as black men, to make you ponder the prevalence society’s biases towards race, ethnicity, and sexuality. By posing the question, Keller puts Burish and Kane into an guilty-until-proven-innocent position.

Keller deftly dances around actually calling them racist and attempts to frame the incident as just “controversial.” It’s actually an incredible oversimplification to lump Halloween costumes in with on-air comments and homophobic slurs. The piece is devoid of any context. At one point, she negates idea that we’ve advanced beyond certain racial and cultural stereotypes. She says that you may think we’re “past all that nasty stuff from the bad old days” — but apparently we’re wrong. Keller’s failed thought experiment take a nasty turn towards written masturbation in this passage:

But the controversies are also a sign of society’s robust health. We debate these words and behaviors — are they heinous and unforgivable or just dumb and obtuse? — because we don’t really know just how to feel about them. And sports is both mirror and lamp. The mirror shows us where we are; the lamp leads us up and out.

This isn’t a gray area; this is over-analysis. Perhaps she should consider writing another culture piece questioning children for dressing up like homeless people, ninjas, and Spartans. And I wish those kids would stop being insensitive to robots as well. Clearly, there’s a distinction between adopting the appearance of an actual person versus representing a stereotype. Would it be OK if I made my lips purple for an Alex Rodriguez costume? But racist if I had a spray tan? Similarly, is it racist for a black person to lighten their skin to resemble Barack Obama since he’s person of mixed race? What about when Deron Williams wears “whiteface” to appear as Cal Ripken Jr. (below via 1053TheFAN)? My only problem with D-Will’s costume is that it’s f*cking scary. The point that Keller misses is that racism isn’t simply a matter of appearance. Pigeonholing the issue this way is a disservice to anybody who actually has helped fight real discrimination.

deron_williams_whiteface

The offensive nature of “blackface” is rooted in its representation of a racist archetype. Clearly, the Blackhawks players were dressed and made up as real people rather than a stereotype manifested through exaggerated appearance. Other than the color of their skin, there’s nothing stereotypical or embellished about their appearance as black men. It could be argued that their skin tone is as relevant as the jersey or fake tattoos. In Julia Keller’s small world, would the Rodman wig be fair game while the Pippen wig is potentially racist? I know — my head is about to explode thinking about that too.

Obsessing over skin tone is a hilarious contradiction for people that would like to crusade against racism. That simply highlights our physical differences as if they actually divide us. They don’t. The issues with racism in descending order of importance are: hate, intolerance, and then stereotypes. Dressing up as a person who happens to be of another race, while somewhat distasteful, does not necessarily make you guilty of any aspect of racism. On the other hand, carelessly labeling other people as racist dilutes the gravity of true hate.

ESPN MAKES “EXPERT” PICKS FOR 2009 NHL SEASON

Red Wings Rangers Hockey

ESPN covers hockey? Well, they do sometimes and they’ve unveiled their annual expert picks for the 2009-2010 NHL season. But I don’t put much stock in them. Last year, only one out of the seven experts chose the Penguins to make it to the Stanley Cup Finals. None of them picked the Pens to win. Hilariously, more people picked the Rangers (3) to win the Atlantic Division last year than the Penguins (2). So, if you still care, the 2009 “expert” picks are below. Vegas has the Penguins, Bruins, Capitals, Red Wings, Canucks/Flames (tie), and Sharks as their frontrunners for division crowns. As a reminder, the NHL opener is Thursday night on Versus.

PATRICK KANE GUILTY OF HAVING TOO MUCH FUN

Former NHL Rookie of the Year Patrick Kane is not known for being tough on the ice. Kane looked to increase his street cred by punching a cab driver in the face this weekend. The altercation occurred after the cab driver could not produce 20 cents change for Kane and his cousin. How do two guys punch a cab driver in the face from the back seat? I can’t even imagine this going down. They must’ve been sauced. Prediction: Patrick Kane makes it all go away by taking an alcohol awareness class.

BUFFALO – Chicago Blackhawks star Patrick Kane was charged with attacking a cab driver in his hometown Sunday, a beating that police said was triggered when the driver did not have 20 cents in change to give the player and his cousin.

Buffalo police said the 20-year-old Kane and his 21-year-old cousin, James Kane, had apparently caught a cab from the city’s downtown nightclub district at about 4 a.m. The cab driver suffered cuts to his face and his glasses were damaged, police spokesman Michael DeGeorge said.

Both men were charged with felony robbery and misdemeanor counts of theft of services and criminal mischief. Patrick Kane pleaded not guilty in City Court on Sunday, WIVB-TV reported. It was not immediately clear when James Kane will appear in court.

The driver said he was punched and hit by both men because he did not have 20 cents in change to give them, according to the police report.
