NUTS & BOLTS: HILARIOUS “REX RYAN” PARODY RETURNS

KissingSuzyKolber has done a great job this year with their hilarious Rex Ryan caricatures. This week’s installment, “Coach Ryan Gets an Unwelcome Visitor” features other prominent smack talkers Phillip Rivers and Buddy Ryan. Great stuff here. (KSK)

Those number-crunching propeller heads over at AccuScore believe the Jets’ chances of winning Sunday will increase if Shonn Greene is the primary ball carrier. (thejetsblog)

Mike Holmgren is lukewarm towards the Browns current QB situation. Possible solutions apparently include: Matt Hasselbeck, Donovan McNabb, Kevin Kolb, and hilariously; Mike Vick and Kellen Clemens. (Cleveland Plain Dealer)

You have to see this to believe it. Packers defensive coordinator Dom Capers was caught by TV cameras dozing off during their playoff game at Arizona. Perhaps this explains the 51 points Warner and co. dropped on the Pack. (FanHouse)

The Sixers and Rockets are reportedly discussing a trade that would bring T-Mac to Philly. A combination of McGrady and Iverson could make the Sixers a strong Eastern Conference contender…in 2004. (PhillyBlurbs)

Gilbert Arenas will likely accept a plea bargain on his gun charges, but he potentially could be put in prison for up to five years. (FanHouse)

DeMarr DeRozan and Eric Gordon will participate in a “dunk-in” to determine who will be the 4th participant in this year’s slam dunk competition. (Seattle Times)

Did you wonder like I did last season how an unknown company like SpongeTech could afford all that advertising space at Citi Field? Well, its simple really, they couldn’t. The Mets are suing the company for 400K in bounced checks. (NYDN)

NFL TEAMS FIGHT FOR LAST PLACE, FIRST PICK

Ndamokung Suh Sea Lion

Playoffs? Playoffs?! Unfortunately, most NFL teams will miss the playoffs and finish the season this week. That doesn’t mean they’re playing for nothing though. There are a handful of NFL teams who are still playing to win (lose?) top picks in the upcoming draft.

As it stands now, the Rams are in line to receive the #1 pick in April’s draft. This could land them Ndamokung Suh or possibly a shot at one of the elite quarterback prospects. However, St. Louis hasn’t secured the pick yet. The draft order is first determined by overall record and then opponents’ win percentage. So that means if St. Louis wins and Detroit loses, the Lions could “overtake” them for the first overall pick. Hilariously, the Rams’ only win up to this point was against the Lions in Week 8. After that, the Chiefs and Bucs will battle for the third overall pick. But neither team has a chance to jump the Lions for the second pick. Cleveland and Washington are the remaining two teams in the NFL’s cellar.

It seems likely that the first few picks off the board in April will include at least one defensive tackle (Suh or Gerald McCoy), one quarterback (Jimmy Clausen or Sam Bradford), and potentially one surprise (Rolando McClain or Dez Bryant). The other names in the mix to come off the board to one of the NFL’s worst franchises are Eric Berry (safety) along with Trent Williams and Russell Okung (offensive tackles). It’s worth noting that the Rams took Jason Smith (tackle), the Lions took Matthew Stafford (quarterback), and the Chiefs took Tyson Jackson (defensive end).

MANGENIUS STRIKES AGAIN, LIONS BEAT BROWNS

Browns Lions Football

The Lions are rarely competitive, but in their matchup against the Browns they had a shot. Detroit got off to a horrible start by allowing the Browns to score 24 points in the first quarter. But the Lions decided not to lay down for once and battled back for a victory.

Number one overall pick Matthew Stafford had his best game of the year tossing five touchdowns. Calvin “Megatron” Johnson and Kevin Smith both had over 100 yards receiving. As usual, Detroit’s secondary was scorched by the Browns. Brady Quinn went 21 for 33 with four touchdowns and no interceptions.

In the fourth quarter, it looked like the Browns would hand the Lions their ninth loss of the season. Here’s how Shutdown Corner described the insane final drive:

On the final play of the game, a Matthew Stafford(notes) pass fell incomplete and the Browns began to celebrate their second win of the year. But Hank Poteat(notes) was flagged for pass interference, which gave the Lions another down with no time on the clock.

There’s more: On the Poteat play, Stafford was hit when he released the ball and stayed down on the field in obvious pain. The rookie clutched his non-throwing shoulder as he ran off the field and was replaced for the final play by Daunte Culpepper(notes). With a cold Culpepper under center, the Lions prepared to snap the ball from the 1-yard line with the clock reading zeroes to get the go-ahead score. Amazingly, Cleveland called timeout before Culpepper could get the snap. This stoppage allowed Stafford to come back in the game and he promptly hit Brandon Pettigrew(notes) for the game-tying touchdown. A Jason Hanson(notes) extra point sealed the game.

Not that anyone should expect good coaching decisions by Eric Mangini, but that timeout was borderline criminal. Culpepper had to rush onto the field with no warning, having stood on the sideline for the previous three hours. The Lions had no timeouts and were in the confusing spot of having to run another play after having thought the game had ended.

So yeah, the Lions should have lost but got bailed out by a MANGENIUS maneuver. Cleveland came into the day averaging 214 yards of offense per game but had 439 on Sunday. This was after the Lions “solidified” their cornerback situation by naming Philip Buchanon and Will James as starters. Detroit will face Green Bay on Thanksgiving at Lambeau. Cleveland faces a brutal three-game stretch of Cincinnati, San Diego, and Pittsburgh. The highlights from the game are below.

MICHAEL VICK TO FLEE PHILLY IN 2010?

58614201

Michael Vick might seem like a good fit on the Eagles. But there’s a good chance he won’t be with the team next year. Vick’s own words and salary requirements indicate that he might move to a new team in 2010.

When asked about returning to the Eagles in 2010, Michael Vick said it would be “an everyday struggle” and that he doesn’t want to be pigeonholed as a Wildcat guy. He’s also due a massive $5.2 million if Philadelphia picks up his team option next year. As a result, it’s highly unlikely that Vick would return to the team for a second season.

Tony Dungy recently mentioned that Buffalo could be a destination for Vick. They had engaged in initial negotiations with the former Falcon’s quarterback before he signed with the Eagles. Dungy also says that teams thin at QB such as Cleveland, St. Louis, and Washington could be interested in Vick.

There’s no way that Cleveland hands over the reins to Vick since they pay so much money to Derek Anderson and Brady Quinn. Even if they get rid of Quinn, Anderson makes around $8 million per year and it would be tough to pay him that much to be a backup (again). St. Louis and Washington both seem like teams that need to start over with rookie quarterbacks.  Other than those teams, the Raiders and Panthers could be options. Though Dungy has previously mentioned that he advised Vick against considering Oakland. Buffalo seems like it could be the best fit.

But don’t rule the Vikings out of the Michael Vick sweepstakes. If Favre doesn’t come back (but I think he will), Vick could be a great option for a team that’s already solid on both sides of the ball. A Favre-less Vikings team could easily cover Vick’s contract since Favre is due about $10 million next year. Another interesting potential fit would be in Tennessee.  Vince Young is due upwards of $4 million in a roster bonus and $7.5 million in salary for 2010.  Unless the Titans decide he’s the quarterback of the future or restructure his deal, it would be extremely difficult to pay that price for a mediocre quarterback.

BRAYLON EDWARDS GETS CALLED OUT BY LEBRON

56328756

You may or may not know that Cleveland Browns receiver Braylon Edwards is beefing with LeBron James’ “people.” Nobody can be sure exactly how the rift began. Frankly, I’m not so sure anybody cares.

The bad blood became public this week when reports emerged claiming Edwards has punched a friend of LeBron’s. This was later confirmed by by alleged victim and LeBron. In response to the incident, King James released a statement aimed at the former Michigan receiver:

“I’ve never crossed paths with Braylon before, but it seems like there’s a little jealousy going on with Braylon and me and my friends. I have no idea why. I’ve never said anything to Braylon at all. But for him to do that is very childish. My friend is 130 pounds. Seriously. It’s like hitting one of my kids. It doesn’t make sense.”

Basically, it sounds like Braylon was mad that one of LeBron’s underlings was giving him a hard time at the door of a club. Edwards’ name was not included in the police report and there are no charges pending against him. So it looks like Braylon will avoid legal and potential NFL disciplinary repercussions. I just hope this issue is resolved with Braylon getting punched in the head.

MANGENIUS NOT LONG FOR BROWNS GIG?

Mangini seen here cooking up schemes to fine/alienate his players

Mangini seen here cooking up schemes to fine/alienate his players

It is no secret that Eric Mangini is not making many any friends in Cleveland. He removed a mural of all-time Browns greats from the team facility to “change the culture”, forced a 10-hour bus trip on rookies during training camp, fined a player $1700 over a bottle of water, and made a mockery of his team by not revealing his starting QB until the start of the season to maintain a competitive edge. (Seriously, how hard is it to prepare for two sh*tty Quarterbacks?) With the Browns starting off the season 0-3 and looking like the worst team in the league his popularity is actually somehow decreasing. It is now being reported by PFT’s Mike Florio that Mangenius might not make it through 2009.  Makes sense to me. The Browns are in complete disarray and have shown that they have nothing but contempt for their coach. I have no idea what Cleveland’s alternate options are, but I can only wonder how many games they have to lose before Mangini is sent packing. Maybe his “Li’l Hitler” shtick will fly in college…or High School.
