JETS WILL RELEASE RUNNING BACK THOMAS JONES

Thomas Jones and New York Jets fans

It was a good run while it lasted. After three straight 1000 yard season in a Jets uniform, Thomas Jones will be released in the near future. The Jets want to avoid paying him his $3.3 million roster bonus and $2.8 million salary.

The move is bittersweet since Jones probably deserves the cash based on his previous contributions. At the same time, the Jets can get a more-than-adequate replacement for less than the $5.8 million Jones was owed for 2010. Last year, Jones earned a measly $900,000 base salary along with a $100,000 “workout bonus.” Clearly, this deal was structured in a way that was unlikely Jones would have ever been paid for the final year. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that Jones will not restructure the contract in an attempt to stay with the team.

With Jones on the way out, the Jets still need to find a third running back. A few realistic unrestricted free agent candidates include Mike Bell, Chris Brown, and Larry Johnson. Out of that group, Mike Bell seems like a good fit to me. There are also a handful of restricted free agents that could make sense for the Jets. That group includes: Le’Ron McClain, Jason Snelling, and LenDale White. LenDale would work and the Jets could get him cheaply — but he also was not a fan of backing up Chris Johnson this year. That’s not exactly the best attitude for a potential RB3.

The Jets also have a number of running back options in the draft. It might make sense to take Javarris James (6′0″ 212, 4.56 40 time) in the fourth round or Keith Toston (5′10.5″ 213, 4.65 40 time) in the late rounds. Bruising backs LeGarrette Blount of Oregon and LSU’s Charles Scott could also be decent late-round options. Both weigh close to 240 pounds and clocked 40 times around 4.7 over the weekend. Toby Gerhart may have priced himself out of the Jets’ plans by clocking a 4.53 over the weekend.

LARRY JOHNSON’S POISON PILL JACKPOT

larry-johnson-money-bin

Before the season, Larry Johnson filed a grievance in an attempt to recover his multi-million dollar signing bonus. He lost the grievance but still managed to get a deal where he earned a pro-rated bonus over the course of the season. At that point, it seems like the Chiefs had successfully maneuvered around Larry Johnson’s poison pill (gi-mongous roster bonus) and managed to keep him somewhat happy.

While cutting L.J. was necessary, the Chiefs didn’t really save any money. Larry Johnson’s deal with the Chiefs paid him $4.55 million in base salary and a pro-rated $62,500 per game roster bonus. Since he was released, the Chiefs won’t be responsible for paying him the roster bonus or the rest of money left on his deal. Johnson was due $22.5 million over the next three seasons but none of that money was guaranteed. Kansas City will still be sending checks to L.J.’s house though. Johnson wasn’t claimed on waivers by any team so the Chiefs have to pay him the remaining $2+ million on his contract for 2009.

If you followed the Chiefs in the preseason, it didn’t seem like it would end like this so soon. L.J. claimed to be pleased with the moves made by new GM Scott Pioli. The former Penn State runner also said, “If they wanted to get rid of me, they had a chance to get rid of me.” At the time, the Kansas City press gushed over the statement as if he had a new attitude. Now, it seems like it may have been a declaration of defiance.

Yes, Larry Johnson’s public image was destroyed. But he also succeeded in punching the Chiefs right in the balls. K.C. was essentially forced to pay him the money they tried to avoid paying him before the season. On top of that, Johnson can still sign a free agent contract with any team.

GOALIE CAM WARD HOSPITALIZED AFTER BEING GASHED

cam_ward_injury_rick_nash

Cam Ward was involved in a scary incident this weekend. The Hurricanes’ goalie made a save before being injured on a seemingly harmless play. It turned out to be much more serious than it looked.

Ward was keeping tabs on his own goal when Columbus Blue Jackets’ forward Rick Nash drove to the net. Nash seemed to lose his balanced when pushed by a Carolina defenseman at the last second. He happened to have his right foot in between Ward’s leg pads and his skate blade swiped the goalie’s upper leg area.

Cam Ward had to stay in a North Carolina hospital overnight. The Carolina goalie is expected to miss 3-4 weeks as the wound heals. Right now, the cut is at risk of being infected but Ward is expected to recover.
