The big time shake ups continued in the NHL on Tuesday. Days after dealing star winger Ilya Kovalchuk, the Thrashers dealt goalie Kari Lehtonen. Atlanta sent Lehtonen to Dallas for a prospect and a pick.
The move puts a big question mark on the Stars’ goalie situation. They already have long-time starter Marty Turco and Alex Auld who has been receiving the bulk of the starts lately. That suggests that the Stars may try to move Turco before the trade deadline. Though, Stars GM Joe Nieuwendyk has already said that Dallas plans to keep three goalies for now.
The Stars dealt prospect Ivan Vishnevskiy along with a fourth-round pick to Atlanta. Vishnevskiy was rated as Dallas’ top prospect by Hockey’s Future. That’s a lot to give up for Lehtonen, who will be a restricted free agent, unless they’re willing to stick with him.
