LUPICA’S LACKLUSTER LOGIC: LEBRON’S COMING TO NY

mike_lupica_lebron_james_new_york_knicks

Mike Lupica gets paid to write, but that doesn’t mean he gets paid to make sense. The senior sportswriter recently made a case for LeBron coming to New York in his Daily News column. Re-hashing nothing new, Lupica states that marketing dollars and “the chance to win it all” will deliver LBJ to New York.

Considering we’ve known about LeBron’s impending agency for years, there has been very little verified information to come out of the James Camp. So how does Lupica anchor his “new” argument? Using Tiger Woods, of course! Yes, seriously.  Lupica seems to think that LBJ will land in New York to soften the blow to Nike’s marketing cachet according to one of his mogul-type friends. Huh? Even if that did make sense, casual observers have always been aware of Nike’s desire for LeBron to play in New York — Tiger Woods scandal or not.

A guy I know from sports, a mogul-type, one who knows the NBA and knows the business side of sports even better, was talking the other day about the possibility of LeBron coming to the Knicks. He is not a New Yorker, by the way, and is not a Knicks fan. He just thinks the whole thing makes sense, and not just for the Knicks and for the league.

“I am hearing,” the guy said, “that Nike wants LeBron in New York even more than ever, because of Tiger.”

He was referring to Tiger Woods. Maybe you’ve heard about him.

So Nike wants to pass Tiger’s torch to LeBron but needs him in New York to do so? Whatever you say, Anonymous Sports Business Mogul Associated With Mike Lupica. Tiger was (is?) clearly one of sports’ biggest stars. However, it doesn’t make sense to lump LeBron and Tiger into the same category simply because they’re Nike frontmen. Sure, they both have international fame and are top individuals in their sports. But there’s a reason why LeBron endorses Sprite and Bubblicious while Tiger promoted Accenture and Tag Heuer. The potential to net over a billion dollars in their careers doesn’t make them the same guy.

This is not a case of black and white even though Lupica would like to frame it as such.  Unfortunately for him, the reasons AGAINST LeBron returning to Cleveland are not necessarily reasons TO sign with the Knicks (see the LeBron to the Bulls and LeBron to the Lakers theories).  LBJ may have a shot at more endorsement dollars in New York, but the same is true about a number of different markets.  That being said, the other half of Lupica’s argument about winning is laughable.  Does he really have a better shot to win with the scraps currently inhabiting the Knicks’ roster than with Cleveland?

A month ago, I thought Donnie Walsh had no shot at LeBron, none, forget about it. But lately the Knicks have become a team their best and most diehard fans want to watch. In the short run, as you try to imagine LeBron in New York, you can see him actually wanting to be able to kick the ball out to the Italian kid, Danilo Gallinari, because you can see how the Italian kid might end up being the best shooter in the gym one of these days.

Or there is David Lee, who plays like a champion every night, no matter what the score. If there is a way to keep Lee. There is Wilson Chandler. In November there seemed to be no hope for this season. The year ends differently.

Michael Jordan had Chicago, Kobe has L.A., why not New York for LeBron? He clearly does have a fascination with the big bad city, and with the Yankees. Maybe that “27″ on the sneakers after the Yankees won the Series really was more than an instant message.

LeBron is smart, which means he understands that as big as he has gotten, and as fast as he has gotten there, the only way he becomes as big as he wants to be is by winning it all. And maybe coming here and having at least one big player come with him is the best way.

To say that LeBron James might stake his future on Danilo Gallinari and David Lee is absurd hyperbole. While we’re fans of both players, they’re only marginally better than teammates LeBron has had in Cleveland. Unless James knows a way to wipe Eddy Curry and Jared Jeffries’ contracts from the books, Lupica’s point about winning with the Knicks is shaky at best.  Even LeBron will need more than a couple of decent supporting players to win a championship — this isn’t NBA Jam.

It’s also outlandish that Lupica claims to think that LeBron would take a pay cut so the Knicks can sign another talent. If James is going to (literally) bet the house on a team, it’s hard to believe that LeBron will choose the Knicks.  The team has only finished above .500 once in the past decade.  LeBron’s only experience with a losing season was his rookie year and his major wager could end with a similar result.

But let’s be serious. Is it even possible for LeBron James to become a BIGGER star? The answer is yes and no. First, it’s doubtful there are that many people planning on jumping ship to become LeBron fans simply because he wears blue and orange.  Second, LeBron Fatigue is already developing across the nation. The guy said he wanted to be a billion dollar athlete. He’s exhibited poor sportsmanship. He had a video of him getting dunked on confiscated. He’s also featured in the now-annoying Nike puppet commercials. James is a hair away from being considered pompous and over-exposed. Expecting to arrive in New York for His coronation might be the last straw for a lot of non-Knicks fans.

Yes, LeBron can still be the King of New York. Though that wouldn’t really elevate his stature much. As previously mentioned, he already has international appeal and maybe Lupica forgot that people love to hate it when New York wins. Coming to New York City might just make LeBron “East Coast Kobe” rather than the innocuous Midwest wunderkind he is now. At the same time, it could make it look like King James thinks he’s bigger than the game.  And that’s almost certainly the case if LeBron is willing to risk colossal failure for an incremental increase in his “legend” and bottom line.

Mike Lupica could be right and LeBron may end up in the Big Apple. However, he also parallels LeBron’s budding career with those of Tiger Woods, Kobe Bryant and Michael Jordan. And when did those guys ever play in New York or take a pay cut to win?  Let’s hope this is the last time that Lupica regurgitates the logic of his anonymous mogul buddies.

THE KNICKS WIN A GAME! THE KNICKS WIN A GAME!

58793204

The Knicks won their first game of the season last night. Not that anybody as watching. It was an encouraging performance but who knows how long they’ll be able to keep it up.

Coach Mike D’Antoni opted for a smallish lineup with David Lee at center and Wilson Chandler at power forward. Larry Hughes even got the nod in the starting lineup and matched up against Chris Paul who dropped 32 points (18 in the 4th quarter) and 13 assists.

David Lee and Al Harrington both turned in monster performances. Lee went 13 for 17 and scored 28 points while Harrington had a career-high 42 points.

DAVID LEE RETURNS FROM FANTASYLAND, RE-SIGNS

Wizards Knicks Basketball

The David Lee and Nate Robinson saga came to an end this week. Lee’s agent had been seeking upwards of $11 million per year but the parties signed a deal for $7 million with a $1 million playoff bonus. It was pretty obvious that Lee wasn’t going to get what he was asking for. The Knicks only had to make a qualifying offer of $2.6 million. At the same time, it was clear that his contract would affect Nate Robinson’s deal. On Wednesday, Nate also reported signed a deal for an amount above his qualifying offer of $2.9 million. I guess we can all stop hating David Lee, Nate Robinson, and Donnie Walsh for now.

NATE THE GREAT CONTINUES TO WAIT

Nate Robinson still has no idea where he’ll be playing basketball next year. Recent reports indicated that he had an offer from a Greek team and that the Knicks were going to re-sign him. At this point, Nate still hasn’t budged from his free agent status. The Knicks are also exploring Jason Williams as a cheap replacement for Nate — making it seem as if the Knicks have decided to wait him out. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Knicks are low-balling Nate with a backup plan of signing J-Will and inking David Lee using some of those savings.

Via FanHouse:

SEATTLE — After dropping 35 points in a local all-star game and winning a 3-point contest shooting left-handed in a searing Garfield High School gym, Knicks guard Nate Robinson had no answers regarding his professional whereabouts in a few months.

Robinson, a restricted free agent, has yet to agree to a contract next season with New York, leaving him uncertain of his future just two months before training camp begins. Robinson received a two-year offer from the Greek club Olympiakos but remains unsigned.

Coming off a career-best 17.2 points per game in 2008-09 and another dunk contest crown, Robinson would appear to a marketable player.

But he is a man without a team for now.

“I don’t even know, I’m just waiting,” he said Sunday when asked if he would sign with Olympiakos. “I’m just basically waiting, that’s all I can do right now. I am just waiting, just taking my time and being patient.”

Robinson said he hasn’t talked with Olympiakos swingman Josh Childress, who left the Atlanta Hawks to sign before last season. He is returning for a second season.

When asked his preference, Greece or the NBA, Robinson said: “I just want to play basketball.”

With Portland guard Brandon Roy watching from the sideline, Robinson and Jamal Crawford led the Rainier Beach Alumni over the Garfield alums 130-123.

NATE A KNICK NEXT YEAR?

Yahoo’s Marc J. Spears reports that Nate Robinson will be staying in New York for at least one more year. The Knicks will soon finalize the deal which is comparable to what Olympiakos is rumored to have offered Nate. David Lee is still holding out and hasn’t had much luck finding any takers. It’s been reported that his agent is seeking around $12 million per year. It’s doubtful that the Knicks would offer Lee a contract of that size. FanHouse thinks DLee may have to settle for around $8 million per year.

Via Yahoo Sports:

Nate Robinson(notes) is close to signing a one-year, $5 million contract with the New York Knicks, a source with knowledge of the talks said Saturday. The deal is expected to be finalized early this week.

Robinson, a restricted free agent, was courted by Greek team Olympiakos. He averaged a career-best 17.2 points and 4.1 assists in 74 games with the Knicks last season. New York, which nearly traded Robinson to Sacramento midway through the season, is trying to preserve as much salary-cap room as possible for the 2010 free-agent class.

NATE & D-LEE’S LUNCH DATE TO DECIDE FATE

Sources say that the Knicks two young players feel “disrespected” by the Knicks’ (lack of) effort to resign them.  Here’s the tweet from Domi-Nate:

Cid_nate-nyc_billboard_normalnate_robinson: and ill be have n lunch wit my boy david lee to talk about our future with the knicks, this should be an interesting lunch, hope we stay n ny
11 minutes ago from web · Reply · View Tweet

The good news is that Nate’s agent, Aaron Goodwin, said he’s confident that the two sides can reach a deal.  A source expects Robinson to sign a deal worth between $4-5 million per year.  That’s very close to the offer the he reportedly received from Olympiakos.  David Lee’s agent has requested around $12 million per year for his client.  I wonder if Nate is trying to convince D-Lee to stay in town for less money.

Dear Donnie, What Will You Do to Save the Knicks?

At the time that I write this, we are on the brink of July 1st and the NBA’s 2009 Free Agent period. This is a very important stage for Donnie Walsh as the president of the New York Knicks. After a relatively successful first year, I believe that along with the upcoming free agent period there are 4 key phases upcoming for Donnie’s presidency that will make or break his legacy as the Knicks head honcho. As a fan myself, I must say that I am rooting for the hometown product Walsh to succeed. To greatly succeed, even. However, if Donnie Walsh falters in one or more of these phases, he will just be another name on the long list of failed “Knicks Saviors” Though I don’t imagine it will be anything close to the disaster of epic proportions known as the Isiah Thomas regime, but that story is for another (already written by many people) article. These are the areas in which “Donnie Basketball” needs to succeed in order to rescue this lost franchise.

Just for good measure

New York Knicks Draft Preview

The NBA Draft is rapidly approaching, and on June 25th NY hoops fans will have a better idea of what their uncertain future will look like when the Knicks select 8th overall. From all the best indicators, the Knicks have boiled down their options to just four candidates. Donnie Walsh is a crafty individual, so there is always the chance of trading up for Rubio or Thabeet, but for the purposes of this preview (and realism) we will take a look at how he might spend pick number 8.

Stephen Curry – PG – Davidson

6-3, 181 | Age: 21

Davidsons Stephen Curry

Davidson's Stephen Curry would bring scoring and leadership to NY

YR GMS MIN PTS REB AST TO A/T STL BLK PF FG% FT% 3P% PPS

I believe The Knicks’ most desired scenario is to see Curry fall to them at number 8. It has been widely reported that Curry has gushed about the potential opportunity to play for the Knicks, and he has even stated that he read Mike D’Antoni’s book “Seven Seconds or Less”. The 6′3″ Curry would be a great fit in D’Antoni’s uptempo offense who could use a reliable shooter. Chris Duhon did a nice job for the Knicks in the beginning of the 2008-2009 season under D’Antoni, but he broke down during the second half raising questions that he could be a true starting point guard. Adding Curry in the draft would allow him to learn under Duhon and also play off the ball when Duhon is on the floor. Curry is known to have a good feel for the game, and has an NBA pedigree in his father, Dell. He is a player that could step right in and make an impact, and continue to build the core with Gallinari and Chandler.
