NHL COMMISH BETTMAN SEZ ISLES’ HOME IS A DUMP

Gary Bettman said what is on the mind of most New Yorkers who have ever been to Nassau Coliseum yesterday. Speaking at a hearing for a potential new Long Island arena, Bettman stated, “I think it is clear, and I say this perhaps as a matter of observation, and as a matter of fact: There is probably no worse major-league facility right now in North America than the Nassau Coliseum”. Well said. The Nassau Coliseum is basically a dump, and no one in their right mind would ever want to go there. Especially when the Islanders suck and have no fans. Islanders owner Charles Wang mentioned that a new arena is basically the only thing that could keep the Islanders in Long Island. In other words you can kiss the Islanders goodbye, New York. Also a point of interest, does anyone else find it comical that the worst commissioner in sports is calling out the worst arena in sports? I guess that’s the old “takes one to know one” thing in full force.

Gary Bettman certainly thinks the Islanders need a new place to play.

“There is probably no worse major-league facility right now in North America than the Nassau Coliseum,” the NHL commissioner said yesterday, according to WCBS 880.

Speaking at a zoning hearing to discuss the proposed Lighthouse Project, a commercial development that has a new arena as a component, Bettman reiterated a familiar refrain.

“I think it is clear, and I say this perhaps as a matter of observation, and as a matter of fact: There is probably no worse major-league facility right now in North America than the Nassau Coliseum,” he said.

The remarks were applauded by the audience at Hofstra University, on hand for what became a 12-hour meeting.

The Islanders played a preseason game in Kansas City last night and return to the Uniondale rink tonight for the home debut of No. 1 pick John Tavares.

Islanders owner Charles Wang has said the Lighthouse project is the only way of keeping the money-losing team on Long Island.

Wang has set a deadline of Oct. 3 — date of the Isles’ regular-season home opener — to get approval. Wang has said repeatedly that if he doesn’t get the OK, he will “explore all options,” among them moving.

SHOWDOWN IN PHOENIX: BLACKBERRY GUY VS. NHL

USA/

I’m not a huge Gary Bettman fan, but this is one of the few situations where I’m rooting for him. The NHL is the last obstacle standing in the way of Jim Balsillie swooping in and purchasing the Phoenix Coyotes. Ice Edge Group, a third potential buyer, recently backed out of the bidding.

Balsillie plans to move the Coyotes to Hamilton, Ontario if he gets a chance. While I know Canada loves hockey, I don’t think this should happen. Hamilton is merely an hour drive away from Toronto and Buffalo is less than two hours away. The Leafs would take a hit from a well-funded upstart franchise, but I doubt they’d get strong-armed out of their own territory. On the other hand, the already-small-market Buffalo Sabres could get put out of house and home. According to Forbes, they lost an estimated $8.9 million in 2007-2008.

I would speculate that Gary Bettman fears contraction if he lets Balsillie bully the Sabres. The issue isn’t stopping Jim Balsillie from taking his shiny toy home to Ontario. The problem is that the move will further de-stabilize the NHL that has a number of struggling franchises.

Via New York Times:

The N.H.L.’s worst fears were realized on Tuesday when Commissioner Gary Bettman informed United States Bankruptcy Court that Ice Edge Holdings had dropped out of Thursday’s auction for the Phoenix Coyotes.

That revelation from Bettman, contained in a footnote of a four-page statement filed with Judge Redfield T. Baum’s court, left just two bidders for the bankrupt team: a $242.5 million offer from the Canadian billionaire James L. Balsillie’s group, PSE Sports and Entertainment, and a $140 million offer tendered by the N.H.L. itself.

“I have been advised that the Ice Edge Group does not currently intend to participate in the auction,” Bettman said in the footnote.

The N.H.L. entered the auction at the Aug. 25 deadline after its white knight, the Chicago baseball and basketball owner Jerry Reinsdorf, dropped out of the bidding. Balsillie’s lawyers argued that the league’s entry into the auction effectively disqualified it from judging the merits of various bids.

Ice Edge, a group of Canadian and American investors that had barely activated its Web site, sought through its $150 million bid to keep the Coyotes in Arizona while playing five home games in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.

Balsillie’s PSE bid seeks to move the Coyotes to Hamilton, Ontario, sometime this season or at the start of the 2010-11 campaign. On Monday, PSE offered a $50 million payment to the city of Glendale to drop its claims against the Coyotes for breaking the team’s 30-year lease on the municipally owned Jobing.com Arena.

In July, N.H.L. owners voted by 26 to 0 that Balsillie lacked the “good character and integrity” to join their ranks.

Ain’t No Party Like An NHL Party

The NHL Awards were last night in Las Vegas. I’m sure your reaction falls into one of two categories: don’t care or didn’t know. That’s because the NHL is a poorly run entertainment business. Alexander Ovechkin won his second consecutive Hart Trophy (League MVP). Much to Gary Bettman’s dismay, the hard-living Ovechkin is the best hockey player in the world. Watching him, it’s obvious that he is one of the most dangerous players to ever touch the ice (post on that to come later this month). I couldn’t find many pictures from the events because the NHL is absolutely horrible at PR.

In the picture below, Alexander the Great is pictured with two showgirls. Not pictured are the six hookers getting drunk on champagne in his limo that’s waiting outside. I’ve made two blog posts today and mentioned hookers twice. I’m batting 1.000, baby. Also, my two blogs posts have been about the NHL. For that, I apologize.
