VIDEO: NANI NETS NASTY GOAL AGAINST ARSENAL

Nani scores a goal against Arsenal

Nani is Manchester United’s 23 year-old winger. Acquiring Nani cost the club around £14-17 million and he had been maligned as of late. Some observers thought Nani was playing his way out of Manchester. That was until his Man of the Match performance against Arsenal yesterday.

Nani also had an assist in the match but his performance will be remembered for his spectacular goal. Technically, the tally was counted as an “own goal” by Arsenal goalie Manuel Alumnia — but Nani did all of the work. The Man U winger received a pass near the right sideline about 25 yards from the end line before taking on two Arsenal defenders. He somehow cuts back behind his plant foot to split them and break free. A quick feint and cut to the right dismisses a third Arsenal defender before Nani sublimely chips the ball towards the net. To his good fortune, Alumnia gets a finger on the ball that may have knocked it in.

Now maybe Nani can get back to working on his celebrations. Here’s the video of the goal:

VIDEO: INSANE MINOR LEAGUE HOCKEY “DANGLE” GOAL

In hockey, it’s called “dangling” when you hold the puck out of an opponent’s reach then put it past them. Usually, a guy will dangle the puck then put it under the opponent’s stick or between their legs when the defender lunges. It’s not unusual to see guys pull off the move — but it’s insane for it to work three times in one sequence.

That was exactly what happened in an ECHL game on a goal for the Victoria Salmon Kings. Scott Howes puts it through the first guy’s legs twice (freeze-framed above) — once with one hand on the stick — before dishing it. Dirk Southern then beats another guy by putting it between his legs and somehow gets it back across to Howes. Then Howes instantly sends it to the Adam Taylor on the back post for an easy goal.

Notice that three guys beat four defenders with three stickhandling moves and three passes. Words and images really aren’t enough to describe the sequence by the Salmon Kings. Check out the video below:

VIDEO: DATSYUK DAZZLES WITH DIRTY SHOOTOUT GOAL

Pavel Datsyuk Chip/Changeup Shootout Goal Against Antti Niemi

Pavel Datsyuk is known for his nifty stick-handling skills. He’s also excellent in shootouts. But he may have outdone himself with a recent move on Antti Niemi.

The Red Wings took the Blackhawks to a shootout on NBC’s Sunday Afternoon Hockey Only In the Second Half of the Season and Playoffs — or whatever they’re calling it now. Tied at 3-3, Pavel Datsyuk stepped up as the first shooter. He then unleashed an off-speed “chip shot” over the Blackhawks goalie. The execution is beautiful: Datsyuk dekes right, pulls the puck back, and then tosses it over the sprawling Niemi.

Apparently, Datsyuk may have borrowed the move from Swedish player Linus Omark. It’ll be interesting to see if he brings the move out again any time soon.

VIDEO: CLINT DEMPSEY SCORES ON DIRTY DIPPING SHOT

clint_dempsey_dipping_volley_goal

I’m a huge Clint Dempsey fan. He’s probably flashier than he is productive, but he’s one of the few Americans that plays with style. Dempsey recently bolstered that reputation with an amazing goal against Stoke City.

Fulham was down 3-1 when Dempsey got an opportunity with a bouncing ball about 25 yards away from the goal. Without taking a touch, Dempsey approaches the ball and fires a dipping volley. Notice how the ball peaks about 10 yards away from the net before sinking just under the bar and beating the goalie. Hopefully Clint AKA Deuce (his rapper name) saves some of that magic for the World Cup this summer.

VIDEO: WORST CALL OF THE YEAR IN THE NHL

blown_replay_call_detroit_redwings_dallas_stars

The Red Wings fell 3-1 to the Stars last night. But it wasn’t without some help from the (horrendous) officiating. Detroit was denied a game-tying goal on a dubious botched call. With about 13 minutes left in the final period, Dallas backup goalie Alex Auld let a wrist shot get by. Everybody on the ice assumed he’d stopped it until Brad May noticed the puck was in the net.

The officials quickly called it “no goal” even though the whistle hadn’t stopped the play. Unsurprisingly, the referees went to the video review to confirm their call. If you didn’t know, the NHL has a hilarious replay policy where ALL plays are reviewed by the mysterious head office in Toronto. Here’s Able to Yzerman’s recap of head referee Dennis LaRue’s call:

“The whistle was blown to kill the play.” The whistle came at least a full second after the goal. What we have here is a LaRue or Auger screw-up, then a LaRue or Auger ego that won’t let them allow to admit, or even consider, their own mistake.

This is pure insanity. I don’t even understand how they got this one wrong. It’s not a judgment call or a 50/50 play or even some ridiculous NFL rule about what is a catch or fumble. It’s hard to even imagine the logic behind upholding the original ruling.

Oh, and here’s the awesome Brad May and Krys Barch fight from the game as well. Brad May looks like he could be an old timey sailor, but he’s actually an NHL enforcer. Here he takes on Krys Barch — the two men have now fought five times in the past three years. There are a ton of bombs in this one and ends up going pretty long. I give it an 8 out of 10.

VIDEO: ANDREI ARSHAVIN HURTS OLYMPIAKOS WITH HEEL

SOCCER-CHAMPIONS/

Andrei Arshavin is kind of a jackass. He enjoys shushing the crowd after goals (here, here, and here) and also told The Sun that he’d ban women from driving. So it’s easy not to like the Russian striker. Except he’s really, really good. Arshavin displayed both is jackassery and world class skills on a goal against Olympiakos. The Russian notched the second goal for Arsenal in a Champion’s League match against the Greek squad. Arshavin may have been offside but he was definitely wide open. With time and space, the Arsenal goal scorer chose to use the back of his heel to guide the ball past the goalie. He’s definitely a d-bag, but I’m kind of starting the like the guy.

CLAUDIO LOPEZ GLORIOUS GOAL FROM MIDFIELD

Claudio Lopez managed to net a highlight reel goal against David Beckham and the Los Angeles Galaxy.  Kansas City’s Lopez recovered the ball near midfield on his own half to set up the goal.  He took one touch before sending a left-footed strike 60+ yards over the goalie (about :15 into the video).  This is one of the prettiest strikes you’ll ever see.  Plus, he made the goalie hurt himself.  Nice! Unfortunately for Lopez, the game ended in a tie after Landon Donovan equalized.
