MESSIER’S NEW HELMET LOWERS RISK FROM HARD HITS

Mark Messier has a world famous dome. His bald head might be his most notable characteristic directly followed by his ear-to-ear grin and crying face. Now, Messier is trying to protect the skulls of current hockey players with a new concussion-preventing helmet.

Dubbed The Messier Project, the former Rangers’ captain has created a new helmet called the M11. The M11 differs from typical helmets because it’s made from one plastic shell called the Mono 90. Most helmets are made from two pieces that can be adjusted to fit a player’s head. This means that the M11 does a better job of spreading force throughout the entire helmet. The helmet also contains padding using Seven Technology that does a better job at reducing impact — especially from multiple hits.

Messier said it’s important that the helmet looks “traditional” and the M11 definitely accomplishes this. It’s doubtful that people would be afraid of looking stupid in the M11 — unlike the Rawlings S100 in baseball. Currently, there are five NHL players wearing the helmet plus about 50 teams around the country including Harvard University.
