SANCHIZE INCISED: JETS QB TO HAVE SURGERY TODAY

Mere days after coaching his team to victory in the DirecTV Beach Bowl, Mark Sanchez will go under the knife today. Sanchez will have surgery to correct a problem with his patellar tendon. If all goes well, he’s expected to make a full recovery and won’t need to wear a brace anymore.

When Matt Stafford spoke to Boomer & Carton, he told them that he believed Sanchez’ would need about 10 weeks to recover from the surgery. Stafford had a similar procedure for his patellar tendon but his recovery time is around eight weeks. Sanchez will have his operation performed at the Morristown Memorial Hospital in New Jersey.

FAULTY PHALANX: CLAUSEN SIDELINED FOR COMBINE

Jimmy Clausen AKA the LeBron James of college football (according to his personal quarterback coach Steve Clarkson) will not impress scouts with his football skills at the combine. Clausen will attend the event but won’t perform any physical drills due to turf toe. The former Notre Dame quarterback still thinks he will impress scouts though.

Coming into the season, Clausen was one of the best NFL prospects in the country. His 2009 campaign solidified that status as he posted an insane 28:4 TD to INT ratio. On paper, they don’t really come more refined than Clausen. He’s trained with the country’s most renowned position coach in Steve Clarkson since middle school. His two older brothers both played D1 football in the SEC. And he was even one of the top-ranked recruits coming out of high school.

That being said, there’s a wide range of opinions about his value as a draft pick. Initially, most observers figured he was in the mix for the first overall pick but would probably be gone by the time Buffalo picked. But now, analysts like Todd McShay are finding more flaws with Clausen. McShay now rates him as a second round prospect and says that he may be the biggest risk in the draft (and compares him to J.P. Losman). At the same time, Mel Kiper Jr. has him ranked sixth overall on his big board and going fourth to the Skins in his latest mock draft.

Clausen may still get a chance to prove his physical skills in person at a pro day after the combined. After watching Clausen a lot this year, I do believe that he can “make it” in the NFL. I actually thought he was horrible before this season and he proved me wrong. However, his insane TD:INT ratio is deceptive and is probably due to luck as much as skill. Even with his polish, I don’t see Clausen coming in and being a “Matt Ryan” from the start. But I can see him sticking around the NFL for the next 10 years as a Jon Kitna type. And don’t blast me for saying that. At least he’s still in the NFL… J.P. Losman is not.

ORIOLES PITCHER WAS INJURED SHOOTING COMMERCIAL

Brad Bergesen won’t be able to participate in spring training for at least 10 days. That’s because Bergesen is nursing a shoulder injury that he suffered in December. But it wasn’t from actually playing baseball. Bergesen got hurt while filming a spot for Orioles TV.

Bergesen was shut down last July after taking a line drive off of his shin. As a result, he hadn’t done much real throwing before he was supposed to appear in the commercial. The spot involved Bergesen throwing to a catcher in an indoor batting cage. Here’s how he described the incident:

“Obviously, I hadn’t picked up a ball. I’m kicking myself in the head about it. That’s really what it was from. Not working on a mound up to that point. I just jumped up on the mound and gave it a go. I was trying to be game speed. I was trying to be realistic as possible with it. The production company that came in wanted it to be as realistic as possible. And I was trying to please, and I got caught up in a moment.”

An MRI taken in January revealed Bergesen’s shoulder strain. He believes that he’ll be ready for Opening Day. If he’s not ready, David Hernandez or Jason Berken would be the most likely candidates to fill his spot in the rotation.

NO WAY JOSE: REYES RUNS, PUTZ KNOCKS METS DOCS

Monday was a day much like other recent days for Mets fans. Except this time around, there was a glimmer of hope on top of the heap of disappointment. Yesterday, a somewhat damning report came out of CHicago detailing the Mets’ handling of J.J. Putz’ injuries right around the same time Jose Reyes was on the field running on Long Island.

The Putz interview becomes yet another example of an injury situation was mishandled by the Mets. The reliever told CSN that he “never really had a physical with the Mets” and they failed to properly diagnose an existing bone spur in his right elbow. That pain continued to linger until Putz became concerned that overcompensating for his elbow might end up hurting his shoulder. So he had surgery to remove the bone spur in June and expected to be back in 10-12 weeks. When he returned, he began to experience tightness in his right forearm. According to Putz, that’s when the Mets told him he “blew out” his elbow which he said had not been causing him pain and shut him down for the season. So let’s hope that’s the last story we have to hear like that.

At the same time, Jose Reyes was working out on Long Island. Reyes was testing his surgically repaired right leg and managed to do five 90-foot sprints. After the feat, he declared, “That’s how I do it. I’m ready to play baseball.” Let’s hope the legs can hold up until the end of summer. Hilariously, Reyes also said that he would “cry a lot of times” when he was watching Mets’ games while injured. You’re not the only one, amigo.

PHIL JACKSON SEZ ARTEST HURT BY HIS CHINESE SHOES

Ron Artest has a new injury… or injuries. The Lakers’ small forward has developed plantar fasciitis in both feet. Head coach Phil Jackson thinks that the cause of the injury might be Artest’s footwear.

Artest, along with Jason Kidd and Shane Battier, have deals with a Chinese shoe company called Peak Shoes. Phil Jackson has noted that the shoes seem less than top quality:

“I’ve called his shoes concrete boots for about the last month. Those shoes look like they are made for the Hudson River. But he stays with them and he gets his feet worked on. But he does not move really quickly. He looks like he’s clogging around out there.”

Jackson also said that Artest may have to sit if his poor play continues. TruWarier had announced the injury himself on twitter on Sunday. He also said later that the injury has “gotten a lot better.” In other news, Phil Jackson gave out books to the entire team and chose Sacred Hoops for Ron Artest. The author of Sacred Hoops is… Phil Jackson.

CHAMPS SPORTS BOWL “MCGAHEES” MIAMI RB’S KNEE

champs_sports_bowl_turf_610x

The Champs Sports Bowl was quite entertaining earlier this week. Wisconsin seemed to get a ton of pressure on Jacory Harris and they also didn’t have much trouble running the ball. Miami nearly came back at the end but couldn’t drive to score after recovering the onside kick.

The result may have been different if the Hurricanes’ starting running back Graig Cooper hadn’t left with an injury. Cooper fell victim to the loose turf at Pro Player Stadium and suffered a “severe” ACL tear — as if it weren’t severe in the first place. Word out of Coral Gables is that Cooper could miss the entire 2010 season while he rehabs the injury. In the Champs Sports Bowl, Cooper had already notched a touchdown along with 29 yards rushing on five carries before he went down. Note the huge divot that we’ve spot-shadowed in the image above. The timing and circumstances of the injury are similar to that of Willis McGahee. McGahee tore his ACL, MCL, and PCL in the 2003 Fiesta Bowl when Will Allen hit him in the knee. Luckily for McGahee, he signed with Drew Rosenhaus and managed to get picked in the first round of the 2003 NFL Draft.  Though, his name was mentioned as a potential top-five pick before the injury.

Graig Cooper, a third-year player, had significant carries in his time at Miami and was considering a jump to the NFL. However, he’d recently said that he was only “worried about this bowl game.” ESPN draft guru Todd McShay recently told the Palm Beach Post that Cooper would have likely been a second or third-round pick at the latest. So the poor surface at Pro Player Stadium may end up costing Cooper millions of dollars. Maybe he should get Drew Rosenhaus on the horn right now.

GOALIE CAM WARD HOSPITALIZED AFTER BEING GASHED

cam_ward_injury_rick_nash

Cam Ward was involved in a scary incident this weekend. The Hurricanes’ goalie made a save before being injured on a seemingly harmless play. It turned out to be much more serious than it looked.

Ward was keeping tabs on his own goal when Columbus Blue Jackets’ forward Rick Nash drove to the net. Nash seemed to lose his balanced when pushed by a Carolina defenseman at the last second. He happened to have his right foot in between Ward’s leg pads and his skate blade swiped the goalie’s upper leg area.

Cam Ward had to stay in a North Carolina hospital overnight. The Carolina goalie is expected to miss 3-4 weeks as the wound heals. Right now, the cut is at risk of being infected but Ward is expected to recover.

BIG BABY IS A BIG DUMBASS

Celtics Davis Basketball

Celtic’s big man Glen Davis will miss up to two months after hurting his thumb. He also may be suspended for a portion of that time.

Turns out that Big Baby got in an argument with a “long-time friend” and decided to punch him. The blow messed up his thumb and required surgery. Oh yeah, his friend was driving a car when Davis decided to hit him. Smart.

Obviously, the Celtics are not happy that they’ll be missing a player due to an avoidable injury. Team owner Wyc Grousebeck said he’d “had enough of Big Baby” presumably referring to Davis’ attitude. Davis signed a new two-year $6.3 million deal over the summer.

JETS GET BAD BREAK IN BIG WIN, GIANTS FALL AT HOME

Jets Raiders Football

Both New York City NFL teams are among the better teams in the league. On Sunday, the Jets made an effort to come back from their recent slump while the Giants showed vulnerability. Neither team looks quite as good as they did early on in the season.  Though, it seems like both teams are on track to challenge for a playoff spot if they can maintain consistency and overcome injuries.

REX AND THE JETS RAID OAKLAND

Everything went right for the Jets in the shutout of Oakland on Sunday afternoon — at least in terms of football. The Jets rolled up over 300 yards on the ground and Mark Sanchez had an impeccable (9 for 15 w/ 143 yards and a TD), though limited, performance. Thomas Jones and Shonn Greene both went for over 100 yards while Greene scored his first two NFL touchdowns.

On defense, the Jets were formidable forcing JaMarcus Russell into three turnovers before he was benched in favor of Bruce Gradkowski. The one thing that did bother me is that both Russell and Gradkowksi seemed to have limited success targeting receivers downfield. Dwight Lowery and Donald Strickland seemed to have a hard time locking down their men and Darrelle Revis even blew an assignment or two. Though, it’s likely this was part of Rex Ryan’s defensive strategy. Oakland is so bad that they depend on a basic passing game that relies heavily on tight end Zach Miller and running backs as receivers. Last week, the Eagles allowed Miller and Gary Russell to catch 11 balls on 16 targets. The Jets held Miller and Russell to just four catches on six targets for only 17 yards. So Rex Ryan’s plan worked out — it’s just annoying to see Louis Murphy and Heyward-Bey actually making plays.

Unfortunately, the injury bug that’s plagued the Jets reared its ugly head again. Leon Washington suffered a gruesome lower leg injury in the first half that was classified as a compound fracture. The bone broke through the skin and required immediate surgery on Sunday night. Rich Cimini of the Daily News thinks that the injury could be “career threatening” and that it likely means the Jets will bring back Thomas Jones. However, that’s basically a knee-jerk reaction.  There’s no indication that Washington’s compound fracture was any more serious than a typical open fracture. The Jets didn’t even put him on injured reserve immediately with hope that he could return this season. With Leon likely out for the rest of the season, the Jets will have to make adjustments in the passing game and pick a new return man.  It also shakes up the running back situation for 2010. Next offseason, Thomas Jones is due a $3 million roster bonus. TJ is quality and you have to respect what he brings to the table. Though, guys like Mike Bell, Correll Buckhalter, Fred Jackson, etc. are all useful RB2 types that make less than Jones’ potential bonus. The Jets could even target LenDale White, who’s scheduled to be a free agent, or they could simply draft a new running back instead of pay the hefty price for TJ.

The Jets seem to have righted the ship for now. The Jets schedule is seemingly favorable for the rest of the season. In the next three games, the Jets will play their most important (and two of the last three) divisional games against Miami (next week) and New England (week 11). You can bet that Rex and co. will be studying the Patriots during the week nine bye even though they face Jacksonville in week 10. If the Jets can beat the Pats, they can make a push for the best divisional record in the AFC East. The Jets face both Tampa Bay and Carolina in their remaining games and finish with a brutal stretch against Atlanta, Indianapolis and Cincinnati. The most interesting matchup may come on December 3rd against Buffalo in Toronto when Mark Sanchez gets a chance to make up for the worst game of his career and potentially move the Jets into a favorable standing in the division.

GIANTS SUFFER CRUSHING HOME DEFEAT

Cardinals Giants Football

Facing the man that kept the seat warm for Eli Manning, the Giants fell to the Cardinals in the Meadowlands last night. It was seemingly a favorable matchup for New York since the Cardinals were banged up at receiver and lacked a true primary running back.

The good news is that Hakeem Nicks is emerging as the go-to receiver for the Giants. The rookie is averaging a whopping 19.7 yards per catch and now has 315 receiving yards while scoring a TD in each of the last four games. It’s also worth noting that Steve Smith was targeted 10 times but only made four catches.  Due to watching the Yankee game, I’m not sure if this was the result of coverage or drops.  Though, it seems to indicate that Smith is getting much more attention than he was early in the season.

It’s likely that the Giants faced the inevitable slump brought on by a rash of injuries. The Giants were already without LB Michael Boley (knee), DT Chris Canty (calf), and S Kenny Phillips (knee) while Aaron Ross (hamstring) also missed the game. Other than injuries, Eli Manning’s poor overall performance contributed to the New York loss. The former number one overall pick was just 19 of 37 and threw three picks.

The Giants are certainly a power in the NFC East and should be a decent bet for a playoff berth. However, they’re not quite as good as advertised (hyped?). Injuries are the primary concern at this point and it’s hard to believe they can be a contender with Ahmad Bradshaw seemingly outperforming Brandon Jacobs. At the same time, the Giants are 5-2 and that record includes four “gimmes” against Tampa Bay, Kansas City, Oakland, and Washington. It’s likely the Giants will be pretty close to .500 during the next nine games of the season. The schedule is considerably more difficult with opponents including Philadelphia (twice), San Diego, Atlanta, Dallas, Denver, and Minnesota.

VIDEO: NO FUN LEAGUE NOTCHES TWO MORE EJECTIONS

Panthers Buccaneers Football

Much like Dave Chappelle’s impression of Rick James, even NFL players can be guilty of having too much fun. That was the case on Sunday as two NFL players were tossed for losing their heads.

The first ejection was in the Panthers-Bucs game. Clifton Smith was back to return a punt for the Bucs when Dante Wesley blew him up before the ball came down. Smith suffered a concussion and was unable to speak after the game due to the impact on his throat. It was clearly far too early and far too vicious of a hit on a defenseless player. Panthers coach John Fox tried to spin the situation by saying it was unintentional. Come on, guy.

James Ihedigbo of the Jets earned the second ejection of the day when he punched Buffalo tight end Derek Fine. It looks like Fine threw the first real punch. The Jets actually could have had two players sent to the showers since Marques Murrell appeared to land a punch before Ihedigbo swung.

TOP ROOKIE QUARTERBACKS HIT ROCK BOTTOM

NFL/

This past Sunday was not a good day for top picks Matthew Stafford and Mark Sanchez. Both rookies came into Sunday riding high after big victories. Last week, Stafford and the Lions snapped a 19-game slide with a win at home against the Skins. In New York, Sanchez had orchestrated a victory against the Titans to push the Jets to 3-0. However, Sanchez and Stafford both ended up taking a step backwards this week.

USC RB STAFON JOHNSON HAS EMERGENCY SURGERY

USC Johnson Hurt Football

USC running back Stafon Johnson was injured in a weight room accident on Monday. The senior was using the bench press when the bar slipped from his right hand and fell onto his neck. Johnson was taken to California Hospital Medical Center. Pete Carroll said that Johnson couldn’t speak after the mishap but “was OK.” The report notes that Johnson had a spotter when the accident occurred. Even though the Trojans have a number of quality backs, losing Johnson will still hurt them. Johnson had 246 carries and 14 touchdowns the past two seasons for USC.
