NEW JERSEY’S KEVIN SMITH DITCHES DEVILS FOR OILERS

kevin_smith_devils_oilers_

Kevin Smith is a huge New Jersey Devils fan. He loves the Devils so much that he even wrote a blog for NHL.com about the team. A little over a year ago, he even ranted about “being a Devils fan from New Jersey” to Puck Daddy, a fellow Devils fan and Yahoo’s NHL blogger:

It’s so weird that there’s not more pride from people living in our own state over our own team. Like, they still feel the need to cheer on teams from two bordering states. I always just kind of found that disconcerting. I feel like if you’re in Jersey, you have to be a Jersey Devils fan. Anybody born within the confines of the border of the state of New Jersey, I feel, should be a Jersey Devils fan.

Unsurprisingly, the Edmonton Oilers are not mentioned once in the Puck Daddy article. Kevin Smith is almost as famous for wearing a Devils jersey as he is a trenchcoat. That’s why it’s surprising to see that he might forsake his favorite NHL team. Well, Silent Bob might not like the Devils as much as he says.

Smith got together with the Edmonton Oilers for a twitter contest. Hilariously, the page says that the actor/writer/director “often speaks about his love of all things Oilers.” The page also mentioned that it was Smith’s first game at Rexall Place. They even interviewed him on the jumbotron after Ales Hemsky made it 3-0. Here’s the exchange between Smith and Mark Schulz:

Smith: “Yeah, I got in ten minutes late, and the Oilers score three goals, I’m a good luck charm.”

Schulz: “So what else did you do today?”

Smith: “Well, Kevin Lowe gave me a tour of Northlands… sorry, Rexall…Centre. I had the biggest chubby the whole time.”

The whole arena BURST out laughing.

Schulz (trying not to laugh): “Then what did you do?”

Smith: “What happened between the two Kevins is best left unsaid.”

Smith told NHL.com this month that he was recently inspired by the 1980’s Oilers teams. He even bought seven Oilers t-shirts and added that he’d be wearing them every day that he was shooting his new movie. By now, it may seem like we’re making something out of nothing. Except for Smith didn’t just say he liked the Oilers or buy new shirts. He went so far as to remove a New Jersey Devils patch from one of his jackets and replace it with a SECOND Oilers patch (below). The Devils patch was even on the jacket as recently as a month ago. Ouch.

So there you have it, Devils fans. Kevin Smith is officially an Oilers fan. Here’s to hoping that we see that jacket with two Devils patches in the near future. You can see two more pictures of Smith at Rexall Place via Shaynsaw’s twitpic account.

MANGENIUS STRIKES AGAIN, LIONS BEAT BROWNS

Browns Lions Football

The Lions are rarely competitive, but in their matchup against the Browns they had a shot. Detroit got off to a horrible start by allowing the Browns to score 24 points in the first quarter. But the Lions decided not to lay down for once and battled back for a victory.

Number one overall pick Matthew Stafford had his best game of the year tossing five touchdowns. Calvin “Megatron” Johnson and Kevin Smith both had over 100 yards receiving. As usual, Detroit’s secondary was scorched by the Browns. Brady Quinn went 21 for 33 with four touchdowns and no interceptions.

In the fourth quarter, it looked like the Browns would hand the Lions their ninth loss of the season. Here’s how Shutdown Corner described the insane final drive:

On the final play of the game, a Matthew Stafford(notes) pass fell incomplete and the Browns began to celebrate their second win of the year. But Hank Poteat(notes) was flagged for pass interference, which gave the Lions another down with no time on the clock.

There’s more: On the Poteat play, Stafford was hit when he released the ball and stayed down on the field in obvious pain. The rookie clutched his non-throwing shoulder as he ran off the field and was replaced for the final play by Daunte Culpepper(notes). With a cold Culpepper under center, the Lions prepared to snap the ball from the 1-yard line with the clock reading zeroes to get the go-ahead score. Amazingly, Cleveland called timeout before Culpepper could get the snap. This stoppage allowed Stafford to come back in the game and he promptly hit Brandon Pettigrew(notes) for the game-tying touchdown. A Jason Hanson(notes) extra point sealed the game.

Not that anyone should expect good coaching decisions by Eric Mangini, but that timeout was borderline criminal. Culpepper had to rush onto the field with no warning, having stood on the sideline for the previous three hours. The Lions had no timeouts and were in the confusing spot of having to run another play after having thought the game had ended.

So yeah, the Lions should have lost but got bailed out by a MANGENIUS maneuver. Cleveland came into the day averaging 214 yards of offense per game but had 439 on Sunday. This was after the Lions “solidified” their cornerback situation by naming Philip Buchanon and Will James as starters. Detroit will face Green Bay on Thanksgiving at Lambeau. Cleveland faces a brutal three-game stretch of Cincinnati, San Diego, and Pittsburgh. The highlights from the game are below.
