Gary Matthews Jr. was an All-Star once upon a time. Last year, he played in 103 games and hit .250. Matthews was dealt on Friday to New York for Brian Stokes in a deal that will bolster the Mets’ outfield depth.
Matthews is signed to one of the worst contracts in the league with $23 or $23.5 million left in the last two years of his deal. The Angels will be picking up $21 or $21.5 million of that as a part of the trade. Los Angeles will also receive Brian Stokes who is a 30 year-old reliever who had a 5.02 ERA last year. Stokes isn’t bad but he also isn’t great. He had a very mediocre 45/38 K/BB ratio last season.
While we love to rag on ASGMJr (All-Star Gary Matthew Jr.), this deal actually works out pretty well for the Mets. They get cheap outfield help without giving up an integral part of their team. Matthews isn’t really a special player but at the very least he’s capable of being a major league regular. Though, he’ll have to improve on his piss poor 2009 to be helpful. He slugged a pitiful .361 last year.
