2010 FANTASY BASEBALL PREVIEW: FIRST BASE

Albert Pujols is #1 in our fantasy baseball first baseman rankings

First base in fantasy baseball is traditionally a position used for premier power hitters. Here’s what I wrote about first basemen last year:

The top 5 starters at this position are typically gone before the end of the 2nd round. When all is said and done, a starting first baseman that gets .300/30/100 will have a neutral to slightly negative effect on your overall stats. First base has to be the foundation of your power production.

Last year, only 25 major leaguers hit more than 30 home runs. Of those 25 players, 12 are eligible to play 1B in Yahoo Fantasy Sports. Last year, 26 players had 100 RBI or more with 13 of them being first basemen. This isn’t a position where being eligible at multiple positions is advantageous. There’s no reason to pick a versatile guy (like Jeff Kent 2 years ago) because they’re undoubtedly more valuable at any position other than 1B.

Not much has changed between 2009 and 2010. First base is still a position where you need to load up on power or risk having to find it elsewhere. Andy Behrens of Yahoo did a similar summary of 2009’s first basemen based on last year’s stats and he noted the following:

  • Nineteen players with first base eligibility finished within the top 100 in the Yahoo! ranks in 2009
  • Fourteen first basemen hit 30 homers, and another 16 hit at least 20
  • Eleven first basemen finished with both 90 runs and 90 RBIs
  • Five of last year’s top 10 batting averages were posted by first basemen
  • In 2009, the average fantasy line for the top 30 first basemen looked like this: 85 R, 30 HR, 99 RBI, 4 SB, .285 AVG.

To put it bluntly, you’re screwed if you don’t have a good first baseman. That’s not to say that you can’t find a bargain. But attempting to wait on a sleeper first baseman can burn a fantasy owner worse than almost anything else. That’s why we’ve ranked the top first basemen along with noting potential sleepers and busts.

LACKEY LANDED IN BOSTON DUE TO WIFE’S PERSUASION

Red Sox Lackey Baseball

Do you think Red Sox fans are done whining about Cashman and co. now? When free agency started, Boston didn’t even think John Lackey would consider signing with them. But the Sox eventually signed Lackey… with a little help from his wife.

Word out of Boston is that Krista Lackey had a hand in steering her husband to the Red Sox. Krista is from New England and graduated from high school in Maine while attending college in New Hampshire. I’m sure most Sox fans are loving it. Except they weren’t too kind when Mark Teixeira’s wife Leigh persuaded him to sign with the Yankees. Here are a couple of quotes from about a year ago:

“I personally think Teixeira is pussy-whipped, but that might just be my opinion…” – Randy Booth on OvertheMonster.com

“Oh man… I can see it already. Leigh Texeria is going to be the subject of many a sign or shouted comment. She is going to get KILLED by the Boston fans. I’m sure somebody is already printing up t-shirts, and Tex will get railed as a man with no pants who must look to his wife before he can make a decision…

This is going to be fun, in a sick sort of way.” – Billy on the Projo Sox Blog

Krista Lackey said that her family was always Sox fans — even when her husband pitched for another AL team. Should a star athlete yield to his wife’s judgment in these cases? I think Derek Jeter’s answer would be: I’m single and rich, bitches! And hey, can you blame Lackey for listening to his wife? He’s an ugly dude. Even with $80 million, it would be hard for him to get another one. Especially one that’s reasonably attractive like his current wife. You can judge for yourself below.

YANKEES TRIUMPH OVER CHRISTIAN MAN, PHILLIES

BASEBALL/

I hope you caught Pedro’s press conference the day before his start. The guy went on a rant with very little provocation. It was almost as if this was the final cathartic moment of his return to baseball.

Pedro was ready to deal when he took the mount on Thursday. Twitter was abuzz about his dominance until he finally gave up a solo shot to Mark Teixeira. Still, Yankee fans, the twitter universe, and the announcers had pretty much given Martinez the win. Too bad there was more game to be played. Pedro later yielded another solo homer to Hideki Matsui. With the score tied at one, Martinez got into trouble in the 7th inning when Hairston and Melky Cabrera started the inning with back-to-back singles.

Joe Girardi then replaced Jose Molina with Jorge Posada while Pedro was replaced by Chan Ho Park. Posada singled to put the Yankees up 3-1. After the seventh, Mariano Rivera came in to shut the door and the Yankees tied the series at one game apiece. Unfortunately, the umpires blew a couple of calls again — which is becoming a disturbing trend.

It was nice to see Mark Teixeira start hitting again. His power has been sorely missed during his mini-slump. Hideki Matsui continued his massive tear that started mid-summer (in July/August/September he hit .293/.281/.325 with 18 homers). Alex Rodriguez continues to be a non-factor in the World Series. However, we won’t get down on the guy. The guy came back (too) early from hip surgery and it wouldn’t be surprising if he’s finally dealing with fatigue.

World Series Phillies Yankees Baseball

Game 3 of the series is Saturday night in Philadelphia. You can bet that Citizen’s Bank Park will be rocking this weekend. There might even be a stabbing or two on Sunday since the Giants play the Eagles on Sunday Night Football at the same time as the Yankees play the Phillies in Game 4. The police better start charging their tasers now.

Just a reminder: Philadelphia has the least attractive people in America according to Travel & Leisure. Are we biased? Maybe. But Philadelphia residents also voted themselves second to last in attractiveness. Burn.

HUGHES ABUSED AS YANKS DROP TWO OF THREE IN L.A.

BASEBALL/

The Yankees bullpen, which had been a strength all year, allowed the Angels to stage a late inning comeback. The Yankees need to win one of two games to reach the World Series.

Last night, the Yankees had a six-run seventh inning on the strength of a Mark Teixeira base-clearing double, Matsui RBI single, and Cano two-run triple. A.J. Burnett was in position to win in the 7th before he allowed Jeff Mathis to single and then walked Erick Aybar. Damaso Marte and Phil Hughes combined to give up three runs before Maicer Izturis struck out swinging.

The Yankees had a chance to tie in the 9th but loaded the bases to no avail. Nick Swisher popped out to end the game. One has to wonder if A.J. should have been lifted after the 6th inning. After the game, Burnett said that he felt like he “let the team down.”

YANKS UP 2-0 IN ALDS AS TEX GETS TASTE OF PLAYOFF PIE

Winning in the playoffs is fun

Winning in the playoffs is fun

Mark Teixeira hit a walk-off laser beam home run in the bottom of the 11th inning to beat the Minnesota Twins 4-3 and put the Yankees up 2-0 in the ALDS. After an action packed game with each team having chances (and failing) to score multiple times, it felt like the game should have been over a few times. Mark Teixeira had the final decision, and he decided to end the game in the 11th. Alex Rodriguez can not go unmentioned because he hit an absolutely mammoth 2 run shot to tie the game in the bottom of the 9th. It was nice to see the Yanks’ 3 and 4 hitters get their “Yankee Moments” out of the way in the same game. Of course, Tex being responsible for the walk-off he was the recipient of the Yankees first playoff pie. I questioned whether there would be playoff pie, but was quickly reminded that Pie Man shows no mercy. Playoff pie is here, Yankee fans; and it’s here to stay. Check out some awesome pics after the jump.

BOMBERS BEAT BOSOX, CRUISE TO BOOZE BASH

58503189

Even in May, we still knew that the Yankees could win the AL East.  Around that time, Chien Ming Wang was imploding, Mark Teixeira was ice cold, and ARod was just coming back.  What a difference a few weeks can make.  For at least a month, the Yankees have been the undisputed “team to beat” in the media.  Going head-to-head with the Sox, Boston had a chance to clinch a playoff spot while the Yankees could secure the AL East.

MARK TEIXEIRA CHATS, BATS WITH LETTERMAN

Mark Teixeira is one of our new favorite Yankees. He must be making a big impact in the Big Apple because he was invited to do Letterman on Monday. I suspect that a big guest (possibly a double segment) canceled last week to create the opportunity. Anna Wintour noted that the Late Show hadn’t asked her to appear on the show until last Friday. Teixeira, being local, was probably an easy choice as a fill-in. Hey, it’s better than having some random CBS personality appear… or A-Rod.

A-Rod on Letterman: Everybody knows he likes his women mannish!

Big Tex went casual with a long-sleeved v-neck shirt and jeans. He probably would’ve worn a suit, but Dave had set up a “batting cage” outside of the studio. Mark relayed a funny story to Dave about growing up in Baltimore and being heckled for wearing his Don Mattingly jersey and how he’s now harassed as a player at Camden Yards. After the conversation, they went to hit some balls on the street. Teixeira only made good contact on a couple though. It seemed to me that they were using weighted balls or something. You can watch the video below and see for yourself:

MATSUI AND THE BOMBERS DROP 20 ON BOSTON

Three months ago, people wondered if the Yankees would beat the Red Sox once this season. After last night’s pyrotechnic display, there’s little doubt that the this year’s Bombers are legit. Hideki Matsui brought most of the destruction with two massive bombs and seven RBI. The Japanese slugger was also about 2 feet short of another home run when Rocco Baldelli caught his long fly on the warning track in the second inning.

If nothing else, the Yankees have proven that the Sox lesser pitchers will have to be nearly perfect to shut down the New York bats. With Brad Penny and Michael Bowden serving up batting practice, Boston had no chance of winning.  Mark Teixeira strengthened his MVP bid with three hits on the night including a homer and three RBI.  He is right on the heels of the AL leaders with 31 home runs and 92 RBI — one jack behind Carlos Pena and two RBI short of Justin Morneau.

While the Red Sox are struggling with starting pitching and their shortstop situation, the Yankees have seemingly endless depth. This was underscored when Damaso Marte made his return for the Yankees and bailed out Brian Bruney by recording two outs to end the 7th.  The Red Sox host the White Sox next and are only a game clear of Texas in the wild card race. The Yankees can put Boston on the ropes if they can continue their winning ways. This 20-spot was for you, Jim Rice!

Mike Francesa is a Closet Red Sox Fan

I’m recently unemployed and have been watching a lot of Mike Francesa on YES lately.  As a Yankee fan, I can’t help but object to his constant gushing about the Red Sox.  Are they a good team?  Yes.  Do they deserve praise?  Yes.  But it’s only mid-May and Francesa has essentially handed them the pennant.  Take another gulp of Diet Coke and settle down, Big Mike.  It’s early.  The Yankees have a lot of work to do in order to win the World Series, but the Red Sox haven’t locked up anything yet.  That’s why I can’t help but cringe when I hear Mike Francesa incessantly drone about the Red Sox’ myriad of wonderful moves and players.  If this unapologetic Sox-loving is going to continue, he may have to get the Sox shirt that we picked out for him.  Or we might get it for him.  Here are a few select quotes from his Sox-Loving-Yankee-Hating tirades:
“The Sox are tight, they know what they’re doing, they’re better than them at every spot- front office, on the mound, manager, everywhere, Youkilis. Yankees don’t have a Youkilis. That wasn’t 3 games, that was 3 years. They’re smarter, they have a better plan, Yankees don’t know what to do. Did it hurt? It hurt a lot!”

“This is why they are a better organization. They have kids coming out of the minors that the Yankees cannot touch.”

“Yankees don’t know what they are doing. Ruining Joba’s career. Sox have a long-term plan, big hard throwers.”

“They don’t have Bruney, they don’t have anybody! They brought guys in from the minor leagues last night! They have no bullpen. All they’ve done is ruin Joba, he can’t hit 95 on the gun anymore. The Yankees have not developed anything and since 2004 the Red Sox have eaten the Yankees lunch if you look at it. They’re flat better than the Yankees.”

“Where’s Masterson for the Yankees? Where’s their Lester that they’ve developed? All they’ve done is bring up Joba and ruin him.”

“The Red Sox bring up Jones, he gets everybody out. Bowden is going back to PAWTUCKET today – HE got everybody out.”

“All the Yankees have done is throw money at it . That was on display last night.”

“They were LAUGHING at the Yankees last night.”
The womens cut will accommodate his ample bosom

The womens cut will accommodate Mike Francesa's ample bosom

Whether or not you’re a Red Sox or Yankee fan, you have to admit that he’s laying it on pretty thick.  The next portion of this article is not Red Sox bashing — it’s a rebuttal to the tyrant that calls himself a Yankee fan.  Mike, what does it even mean to not have “A Kevin Youkilis”?  Most would prefer ARod or Teixeira.  Justin Masterson got blown up in back to back starts earlier this month.  The Sox are currently platooning Nick Green and Julio Lugo at shortstop.  At some point, that will be an issue.  David Ortiz has no power and I don’t really see any reason to believe it’s coming back.  JD Drew doesn’t care about anything other than banking his $14 million yearly salary — the guy has stats worse than Xavier Nady in the past two years.  Josh Beckett isn’t really elite anymore (he sports a 6.42 ERA in 7 starts to go with his 4.03 ERA in 2008).  And oh yeah, Joba Chamberlain has an ERA a full two runs lower than Jon Lester (3.89 vs. 6.31).

Talk all the trash you want about the pen (though calling it a career for Mariano might be a bit pre-mature), Francesa, but the rest of the team has a lot of time to improve.  Boli or not, the Yankees were missing one of the best hitters in baseball for the first 5 weeks of the season.  ARod is still an elite hitter at only 80-90% power and it’s probable that he’ll get stronger as the season goes on.

AJ Burnett loves to chew tobacco

AJ Burnett loves to chew tobacco

Much of Francesa’s misplaced ire has been aimed at the newest pinstripe recruits.  As GM of the Yankees, Brian Cashman is tasked with signing the best players NOT finding the best bargains.  The fact that the signings were so big has only amplified the criticism.  However, it’s far too early to write off the Yankees’ Big Three of 2009.  I was never a huge AJ Burnett fan (mainly due to injury concerns) but the guy is a gamer.  You have to respect any starting pitcher that rocks a dip during the game.  He’s also determined to make a difference.  I’ve watched his interviews and I appreciate his attitude — and it’s one that these three guys all share.  He might be overpaid but he’s a great secondary option behind CC.  Speaking of the biggest of the big three, CC hasn’t been bad at all.  He’s actually been pretty unlucky.  It’s clear that he’s becoming more comfortable (only 2 BB in his last 3 starts) and I suspect he will turn it on as the summer heats up.  For Teixeira, I have no doubt that he will provide a huge boost for the Yankees.  Whenever it comes, his poor April numbers will be an afterthought.  Nearly all of his power has come from the left side of the plate and he’s actually batting over .300 as a righty.  So it really shouldn’t be long until he’s performing at his normal level.

With a team like the Yankees or Sox, it’s obviously important to play well early.  But both of these teams are constructed to win championships.  For that reason, it’s equally important to carefully refine the roster as the season goes along.  The Yankees have a lot of issues, but they could easily be addressed with a couple of personnel moves.  It’s likely that the Yankees will seek relief help in the near future (somebody like Matt Capps?), but the rest of the pieces should fall into place naturally.   You may say “But Chris, there’s way too much optimism in this article — the Yankees won’t reach a level to challenge for the AL East title.” And you could be right.  Even so, the Yankees will still be in a spot to contend for the wild card if only half of it goes right.  As long as the Yankees are playing their best baseball in September and October, the first month of the season will mean very little.  All is not lost, Mike.  But you should still get the shirt.
