NAME GAME: DOLPHINS GET NEW SPONSOR FOR STADIUM

It’s hard to keep up with the name of the Dolphins’ home stadium. It’s had names including Joe Robbie Stadium, Pro Player Park, Pro Player Stadium, Dolphins Stadium, Dolphin Stadium, and Land Shark Stadium. That’s six names in a little over 22 years and now there will be a seventh name.

The new name for the stadium will be Sun Life Stadium. Sun Life Financial signed a five-year deal with options that could extend the deal for up to 20. The agreement will be worth about $5 million a year but up to $7 million if the Dolphins or Marlins (before they move out in 2012) reach certain points in the playoffs. Above is a rendering of the potential addition of a metal roof that would cover seating but leave the stadium open.

BILL PARCELLS IS A FRIEND OF THE HOMELESS

bill_parcells_homeless_man

Bill Parcells seems like a fiery guy that might be a bit misanthropic. Apparently, he’s a pretty nice dude though. We learned that earlier this year in his dealings with Ricky Williams. Now, there’s a story out of Palm Beach that Parcells has befriended a random homeless man.

The man’s name is John Schoen and he spends his days panhandling and used to newspapers to Parcells. Schoen usually sets up shop on the corner of U.S. 1 and 17th Street Causeway and occasionally catches the Dolphins’ head honcho. The two men typically discuss football, baseball, horse racing, and the stock market. According to Schoen, religion and politics are off limits.

Big Tuna isn’t a good guy for simply humoring a down-on-his-luck man. Schoen professes to be a huge Philadelphia Eagles fan and made that clear to Parcells. But the Dolphins VP did more than just listen. He got the homeless man an Eagles shirt and hat that came with a personal note from Philadelphia head coach Andy Reid. Later, he even bought Schoen tickets to three Dolphins games along with a Dolphins hat. Schoen apparently declined $150 for his seats to the Dolphins/Ravens playoff game.

I’ve always been a fan of Big Tuna’s no nonsense approach to the game. While other teams are busy trying to conjure up schemes, Parcells is always busy cultivating a culture of professionalism and effort. It just seems like he’s a better man than a football coach — and that may be why he succeeds.

Editor’s Note: Originally, I had planned on this post being funny. It didn’t work out that way. Apologies.

CHANNING CROWDER SENT REX RYAN A PEACE OFFERING

rex-ryan-channing-crowder-giftbasket

In June, Dolphins linebacker Channing Crowder called Rex Ryan the “OTA Super Bowl winner.” Ryan responded to the comments by claiming he didn’t know who Crowder was. The Jets head coach also said the he basically would’ve just beaten up Crowder if he were younger.

Crowder fired back by saying, “I’d have beat the hell out of that big old joker.” He then offered up his dad or uncle to fight Rex Ryan. With the Jets set to play the Dolphins two times in the span of a month, you’d think the war of words would be heating up.

Instead, exactly the opposite has happened. On Thursday, Ryan told reporters he was “clearly joking” and that his tone was not “reflected in that way.” Crowder echoed Ryan’s sentiments saying they were “just messing around.”

The Dolphins’ linebacker went one step further and even sent Rex Ryan a gift basket. Crowder didn’t specify what he sent, but did say that the New York head coach sent him a “thank you” card. As you can see, this rivalry is really getting nasty.  Hopefully, they both come to their senses before somebody gets hit with an invitation to dinner.

BILL PARCELLS PASSES THE GREEN TO RICKY WILLIAMS

56398613

It’s not secret that I love Ricky Williams. I truly believe that the only reason he won’t be in the Hall of Fame is because he lost his passion for football. Well, Ricky has that fire back. He’s undergone major life changes to get himself back on track. People are noticing too. Bill Parcells must respect his dedication because he offered Ricky an extension in a most unusual way:

Last May 21, on Williams’ birthday, Parcells walked by as Dolphins players stretched on the practice field and handed Williams a birthday present in the form of a folded-up yellow Post-it note.

“Tell me what you think,” is all Parcells said while walking on.

Williams glanced quickly at the note, but it wasn’t until later, after practice, that he unfolded it and weighed its minimalist message: “2010 — $4.35 million.”

“I went, ‘Wow,’” Williams says.

That must be the most casual contract extension in pro sports history. No agent. No meeting. No demand. No negotiation. No announcement. Nothing but one old pro showing an appreciation for another old pro.

Parcells offered Ricky a straight up $1 million raise. The $4.35 million mark is also about twice the amount Ricky was paid for his services the year he led the league in rushing (2002). Oh yeah, Ricky also plans to release a documentary about his life that’s been in the works since 2005. With a budding massage therapy career, a documentary in progress, and a hefty raise, Ricky Williams is off and running.

GREG CAMARILLO: CHAD PENNINGTON’S BUTT BUDDY

Dolphins Falcons Football

Greg Camarillo came back from knee surgery to win a starting job at wide receiver with the Dolphins. Camarillo is still limited, so his starting job is more of a title than his actual role. Davone Bess actually had more targets and catches, but Camarillo had the best play of the day. The Dolphins’ receiver had fallen down while attempting a catch only to have the ball bounce off of his backside and legs before he grabbed it. I’d like to see him try to do that again.

DOLPHINS EXTEND RICKY WILLIAMS THROUGH 2010

81707298JS001_MIAMI_DOLPHIN

Ricky Williams will be a Dolphin through 2010. The former Heisman winner recently signed an extension that will pay him $4.35 million next year. We here at BLS are huge Ricky Williams fans and applaud the move. Ricky has put his life back together and will likely pursue a career in massage therapy (and weed-smoking) after football. He said he plans to retire after 2010.

DOLPHINS COACH TAKES TEAM TO SEE G.I. JOE

Panthers Dolphins Football

Dolphins coach Tony Sparano decided to “reward” his players for a good day of practice on Sunday. The Miami head man decided to take the team to see G.I. Joe: The Rise of the Cobra instead of holding Monday’s practice. Last year, he took the team to see The Express. Sparano cited explosions and “nice-looking women” as the reasons the factors that influenced his decision.

Via South Florida Sun Sentinel:

DAVIE – Pleased with the “energy” he saw at Sunday’s practice, Miami Dolphins coach Tony Sparano canceled Monday’s session and took his players to see G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra at a local movie theater.

“Lot of popcorn, big smiles and some rested bodies,” Sparano said Monday afternoon.

The team held a 25-play walkthrough in the practice bubble, then boarded a few buses and headed for an undisclosed location. It wasn’t until the players were seated in the theater that they realized which film they would see.

Last year, it was The Express, the story of former Syracuse football star Ernie Davis. This time Sparano had to do a little extra “research” to find the right flick.

“This thing here, I just figured there’d be a lot of things blowing up and people doing all those things, so I thought it was pretty good,” Sparano said. “And it had a nice-looking woman in it, too, for ‘em.”

DOLPHINS OWNER SEZ LATINOS & CELEBS FUEL SUCCESS

Miami Dolphins owner Stephen Ross has big plans to help the Dolphins become more popular. He’s made a push to get younger and expand the fan-base in Miami. The effort includes a higher level of involvement with the Spanish-speaking media, celebrity-fueled red carpet press opportunities, and buzz-worthy pop acts to open up the games. I don’t think it’s a bad plan — but none of it really has to do with football. The Dolphins might be more popular if they actually had a star on the team. Ricky Williams probably still has the biggest “name” appeal followed by Joey Porter, Chad Pennington, Ronnie Brown, and maybe Jake Long. Hell, the Miami Dolphins cheerleaders generate more buzz than the on-field product. My main hope is that they never roll out “Delfines” jerseys. That’s “dolphins” in Spanish. Clever, right? You should check out the entire article since I only grabbed a couple snippets below.

Dolphins CEO Michael Dee knows what the kids want

Via Miami Herald:

REACHING OUT

Ross believes the team should reach out to the Spanish-language media. No representatives of it were at Joe’s Stone Crab for the Dolphins’ 2008 team awards breakfast, stunning Ross and his aides. Since then, all press releases have been distributed in English and Spanish. Dee said the percentage of advertising dollars spent on English-language media — estimated at 90 percent — would be reduced.

CELEBRITY FACTOR

Ross’ vision of a “Sunday party” includes featuring more celebrities, who along with former Dolphins stars, will be given an “Orange Carpet” treatment. He believes South Florida is about “celebrities, entertainment and lifestyles,” which, in Ross’ view, makes Miami one of the nation’s three unique cities — along with New York and Los Angeles.

RICKY WILLIAMS HAS NEW JOB, NAME

I’m a huge Ricky Williams fan and have always felt he got a bad deal — and not just with his first contract. Master P ruined his earning potential, the Dolphins ruined his legs, and weed derailed his career. He’d had four straight 1000 yard rushing seasons before his “hiatus”. I remember where I was when Ricky broke the career NCAA rushing record. I was at a soccer tournament and we were actually eating at a mall in between games. With a dirty soccer uniforms still on, we went into Montgomery Ward and watched him rip off a 60 yard touchdown to pass Tony Dorsett’s mark. I still don’t count Ron Dayne’s record due to fatness.
