MIKE VICK HAS 60% CHANCE OF LANDING IN ST. LOUIS?

Good sports writing is based on fact and in-depth analysis. Mediocre sports writing is poorly framed and based largely on assumption. Methinks that Jim Thomas’ speculation about Michael Vick is the latter. For STLtoday, Thomas says that there’s about a 60/40 chance of Vick becoming a member of the Rams.

Last week, Thomas wrote that St. Louis was “seriously interested” in acquiring Vick. It’s not a bad move since the Rams have made it clear that Marc Bulger’s future of the team is in limbo. At the same time, many observers believe it would be a reach for the Rams to take a quarterback first overall. So it makes sense that they’d take a look at Vick. In his reality show, Vick noted that he believed he’d sign with the Chiefs or Rams before he ended up with the Eagles.

St. Louis probably wouldn’t have to give up that much to get Vick. But right now, the Eagles are playing hardball and acting as if they are willing to stick with him. Though, that’s likely posturing since Vick is due a roster bonus of $1.5 million by March 5th and a massive $5.25 million salary for the 2010 season. The Rams could probably get Vick by simply offering a 4th or maybe even 5th/6th round pick. It’s not really worth giving up more to acquire him since the Eagles will probably cave before they have to start paying for Vick’s services for the 2010 season.

MICHAEL VICK TO FLEE PHILLY IN 2010?

58614201

Michael Vick might seem like a good fit on the Eagles. But there’s a good chance he won’t be with the team next year. Vick’s own words and salary requirements indicate that he might move to a new team in 2010.

When asked about returning to the Eagles in 2010, Michael Vick said it would be “an everyday struggle” and that he doesn’t want to be pigeonholed as a Wildcat guy. He’s also due a massive $5.2 million if Philadelphia picks up his team option next year. As a result, it’s highly unlikely that Vick would return to the team for a second season.

Tony Dungy recently mentioned that Buffalo could be a destination for Vick. They had engaged in initial negotiations with the former Falcon’s quarterback before he signed with the Eagles. Dungy also says that teams thin at QB such as Cleveland, St. Louis, and Washington could be interested in Vick.

There’s no way that Cleveland hands over the reins to Vick since they pay so much money to Derek Anderson and Brady Quinn. Even if they get rid of Quinn, Anderson makes around $8 million per year and it would be tough to pay him that much to be a backup (again). St. Louis and Washington both seem like teams that need to start over with rookie quarterbacks.  Other than those teams, the Raiders and Panthers could be options. Though Dungy has previously mentioned that he advised Vick against considering Oakland. Buffalo seems like it could be the best fit.

But don’t rule the Vikings out of the Michael Vick sweepstakes. If Favre doesn’t come back (but I think he will), Vick could be a great option for a team that’s already solid on both sides of the ball. A Favre-less Vikings team could easily cover Vick’s contract since Favre is due about $10 million next year. Another interesting potential fit would be in Tennessee.  Vince Young is due upwards of $4 million in a roster bonus and $7.5 million in salary for 2010.  Unless the Titans decide he’s the quarterback of the future or restructure his deal, it would be extremely difficult to pay that price for a mediocre quarterback.

“THE MICHAEL VICK PROJECT” IS COMING TO CABLE TV

58502190

Michael Vick is back on the gridiron and soon he’ll also be on the small screen. BET plans to air a docu-reality series focusing on Vick’s past and return to football. It’s likely that this effort will be more popular than their last reality show about an NFL player, Next Level: Vince Young.

The move brings up a few obvious questions. Is this a PR move? Does he need the money? Or does he just want to tell his story? As we saw with The T.O. Show, these programs can be warped to tell a very one-dimensional story.

The Los Angeles Times says that Vick wants to avoid “the further wrath of animal rights protesters.” However, that type of controversy would only fuel the ratings a-la Jon & Kate Plus 8.

Producers say the show will be “serious and somber” since it focuses on Vick’s struggles. The series will also examine his troubled childhood — and maybe we’ll see a bit of Marcus Vick too. The show will be produced by DuBose Entertainment, MV7 Productions (owned by Vick), and Category 5 Entertainment. It’s worth noting that IMDB lists America’s Funniest Home Videos as James DuBose’ first work as a producer.

NIKE RE-UPS THE MICHAEL VICK EXPERIENCE

58106399

The Michael Vick Gravy Train is full speed ahead. Nike announced on Wednesday that they have signed Michael Vick to endorse their products. Terms of the agreement were not released. You may remember way back when that Michael Vick was one of the main pillars in Nike’s football campaign. That was until he faced dogfighting charges. Well, the Swoosh is back to support Vick now that the public is kinda-sorta-pretty-much OK with him. And hey, why not sign the guy at the felony discount? And as you can see below, Vick was already wearing Nike cleats in his first game back.

MATT LEINART IS REALLY, REALLY TAN

mattleinart_figure

Former golden boy and current goat Matt Leinart has locked down the Arizona Cardinals backup job. It’s not easy to beat out Brian St. Pierre. Leinart put in a summer full of work to come out on top in the QB competition. Apparently, his action figure displays his increase in melanin. Doesn’t he look really, really tan? I actually did some searching and found that most of the figures show him as the whiteboy that he is. But the recycled Vick-Leinart action figure above is still hilarious. (Via SPORTSbyBROOKS)

FAVRE, VICK SELL TONS OF JERSEYS DESPITE HATE

NFL/

While the NFL pretends to be a silent observer, they’re wildly cheering the returns of Brett Favre and Michael Vick. I assume that the two returning stars have increased television ratings. Similarly, both men have had their jerseys crack the top 5 in sales. The numbers were compiled based on sales from April 1 to August 28th. In that span, Favre is ranked #1 and Vick is ranked #4. Don’t forget that both men signed in MID-AUGUST. Unfortunately, Ron Mexico did not make the list. Below is the top 20 jerseys from Darren Rovell:

1. Favre
2. Cutler
3. Polamalu
4. Vick
5. Roethlisberger
6. Tony Romo
7. Sanchez
8. Tom Brady
9. Adrian Peterson
10. Eli Manning
11. Terrell Owens
12. Peyton Manning
13. Ward
14. LaDainian Tomlinson
15. Jason Witten
16. Larry Fitzgerald
17. Joe Flacco
18. Matt Ryan
19. Aaron Rodgers
20. Crabtree

CAN WE FINALLY FREE MICHAEL VICK?

I’m so tired of seeing opinions tossed around about Michael Vick that I can’t stand it anymore. The last straw was an op-ed piece by Judge Benjamin Lerner that appeared on Philly.com. Judge Lerner opines that the Eagles’ signing of Vick is “at odds with the real nature and purpose of ’second chances’ in our criminal justice system.” It’s truly pains me that a JUDGE of all people can put forth such poor logic. I’m going to recap his points along with my rebuttals since he seems to voice the opinion of most misguided Vick-haters. No, I don’t support dogfighting. I’m not even a big Michael Vick fan. But I’m tired of seeing the man trashed for no good reason.  My rant is comprised of many words, so you’ll have to read the full post to see all of it.

WILL MICHAEL VICK BE THE EAGLES EMERGENCY QB?

Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer explored an interesting angle of the Michael Vick story. NFL teams can only dress 45 players for each game. Typically, only two QBs will be listed as active and then the 3rd QB can inhabit a special 46th “emergency QB” slot. However, there are specific rules about how the emergency QB can enter the game. The emergency QB must enter the game and line up under center or dropped back in shotgun. The emergency QB must also continue to play quarterback on subsequent snaps. Additionally, the emergency quarterback can’t play at the same time as the active quarterbacks. When all is said and done, it’s most likely that the Eagles will just list three active QBs including Vick.

Eagles Vick Football

Via Philly.com:

When it comes to the NFL rule book, being a “third quarterback” is more complicated than just being third string on the depth chart.

That difference now matters to the Eagles – and their fans – because of Michael Vick.

Teams can dress 45 players for a game, and most use two spots for quarterbacks, though there is no limit. The rules allow for a 46th player if it’s a quarterback and if two quarterbacks are among the first 45 players.

The “third quarterback rule” was created 18 years ago to allow teams a break-glass-in-case-of-emergency quarterback in case the first two were injured. But the rule has a string of stipulations to keep NFL coaches from sneaking an extra player onto their 45-man, game-day rosters while gambling that they won’t need a third quarterback.

Coach Andy Reid has deemed Kevin Kolb the No. 2 quarterback behind Donovan McNabb, but there wouldn’t be much purpose in carrying Vick as the emergency third quarterback.

The Eagles signed Vick after he spent 18 months in prison on dogfighting charges, which angered some fans and prompted speculation about which quarterback might be the starter years into the future. It’s unlikely the Eagles went through all of that just so Vick could carry a clipboard this season.

Vick can play in the last two preseason games, including Thursday’s contest against Jacksonville at Lincoln Financial Field. He can’t play in the regular season until NFL commissioner Roger Goodell says so, a decision likely before the sixth game.

If Reid uses Vick as he has hinted he would – as a multipurpose threat used anytime, anywhere – the coach would have two options on game day: Promote Vick as the backup quarterback or activate three quarterbacks.

“The Eagles can carry three quarterbacks on their 45-player roster,” NFL spokesman Mike Signora said, “but if they have three on their 45, they are not entitled to a 46th player/fourth quarterback. A team is entitled to the 46th player/third quarterback if and only if it has two, and only two, bona fide quarterbacks on the 45.”

It seems like a small price to pay: Sacrifice a special-teams player to have both Vick and Kolb at your disposal. Of course, the price won’t seem as small if an opponent returns a punt for a touchdown. Regardless, if Reid knows now what he intends to do, he isn’t telling.

“You have a variety of things you can do there,” Reid said last week. “I’m not exactly sure what I’m going to do there. Something will happen.”
