MOCK, YEAH! JETS & GIANTS FIRST ROUND PROJECTIONS

Sergio Kindle

Will Sergio Kindle be racking up sacks for the G-Men next year?

You’ve probably seen a number of mock drafts by now. They probably aren’t very accurate. But now we have a bit more useful information since the NFL Combine is complete. Still, the impending free agency period (starts tonight at midnight) and individual pro days will likely change the complexion of the draft. In any case, we’ve rounded up a handful of updated post-Combine mock drafts to see who the Jets and Giants may be targeting.

AARON ROSS IS GETTING MARRIED TODAY

All eyes may be focused on the NFL Combine today but that won’t be the case for Aaron Ross.  The Giants defensive back is in Texas for his wedding.  Today, he’ll get married to his long-time girlfriend Sanya Richards.

If you didn’t already know, Richards is quite the athlete herself.  She has two Olympic gold medals to her name along with four golds at the World Championships.  The couple has been dating since 2003 when they met at the University of Texas.  I’m glad they’re finally getting hitched.  Because I can’t wait until they produce a super-athlete child.

Recently, Richards was at Bridal Reflections on Fifth Avenue for her final fitting in her wedding gown.  She also had a film crew with her as the wedding will air on WEtv’s “Platinum Weddings.”  You can read more on Richards’ wedding plans here.

NUTS & BOLTS: OSI THREATENS TO WALK

Giants DE Osi Umenyiora told WFAN yesterday that if he has to be a back-up player next year he will quit football. Gotta love that attitude. Needless to say, its very possible that Osi ends up with another team in 2010. (National Football Post)

The average price of a Super Bowl ticket is about $1,000. That is a 900% increase from the first Super Bowl, and triple the amount of just 10 years ago. (Journal-Sentinel)

So if you decided to spend the grand, or just wanted to check out Miami for all the pomp and circumstance, you could find yourself at a party hosted by Diddy with Erin Andrews! The party is open to the public, but to make things more interesting you should just sneak in by using our handy guide. (SportsbyBrooks)

The St. Louis Rams are apparently the “favorite” to land Michael Vick in a deal this offseason. (RotoWorld)

Chad Pennington would like to remain with the Dolphins next season despite having a 3rd shoulder surgery in the past 6 years. Could he win Comeback Player of the Year award for the third time? (Miami Herald)

John Legend’s hot girlfriend, Christine Teigen is set to appear in SI’s Swimsuit Edition. (Huffington Post)

The Yankees toured their World Series trophy around Asia last week. Next stop? Westchester. The trophy will be on display this Saturday from 11-2 at the Westchester County Center. (LoHud)

25 year-old, 2 time Cy Young award winner,Tim Lincecum is set to break the arbitration record this year. However, due to concerns over the A’s moving to San Jose, the Giants may try to keep that amount to a minimum. (Baseball Musings)

Tiger Woods will leave by the end of this week and head for a private vacation with his wife, Elin. Could there be a reconciliation in the works? Now that the media frenzy has subsided, does anyone truly care? (SportsbyBrooks)

David Lee may not have been selected to his first All-Star team, but he has been invited by Team USA chairman Jerry Colangelo to train with the team in July. (NYDN)

US Olympic hockey player/Toronto Maple Leaf, Mike Komisarek will miss the Olympics and the rest of the NHL season due to shoulder surgery. (Seattle Times)

BETTIS: BILL COWHER WAITING TO COACH GIANTS

Now that Jerome Bettis is a “journalist,”, his quotes seem to find their way into more headlines. The Bus continued that trend when he recently spoke with Mad Dog on Sirius. Bettis told Russo that he believes that Cowher is “going to be” with the Giants. Here’s the quote:

“I believe he’s going to be with the Giants. I think that’s the team that he really coveted. This is where he always wanted to be. The Mara family, he’s been very close to them. He’s known them very well and was on the inside track, before the Giants won the Super Bowl, for that job and I think he’s holding out for that opportunity if it presents itself.”

While it’s a pretty big bombshell to drop, it doesn’t seem too unrealistic. Although, New York isn’t close to Cowher’s home in Raleigh, North Carolina and the Cowher family recently built a new home there. Still, the Giants gig is certainly one of the most coveted in sports.

It’s possible to make assumptions about why Bettis made the statement. But that’s somewhat pointless since I don’t know the context of the remarks. However, there are a few interesting aspects of Bettis’ comments. Did Cowher tell him this recently or has he known all along? Did Bettis say this to “get the ball rolling” or was he prodded to make the statement? In any case, Bettis may have unwittingly (or not) put a ton of extra heat on Tom Coughlin.

SATURDAY MORNING SCREW – HANGOVER EDITION

20080310_bruce_springsteen

The Boss will be pulling for Gang Green Sunday night... will you?

Happy New Year, guys and girls. Busy weekend for sports in general and no shortage of action on the local front to keep you all busy. For starters, raise your hand if you tuned off the Tim Tebow show last night to check out Nate Robinson dropping a 41-point N-Bomb on the Hawks. Seriously though, if Urban Meyer knew that the Sugar Bowl was going to be that relaxing, he may not have Favre’d us this week.

Since I’m a little sluggish from starting the New Year off right (read: drunk, watching college football, and sleeping), we’ve already missed two games on today’s dockett – the Rangers dropping the back end of a home-and-home series with the Hurricanes that spanned two years in OT earlier today and the Nets not making news by going down quietly to the King and the Cavs in scenic East Rutherford. Really, it’s breathtaking in the winter. You’ve gotta see it.

And now, on with the show…

Saturday January 2, 2010

Who: Atlanta Thrashers at New York Islanders

When: 7PM, MSG+

The game is on MSG+. It’s the Islanders. Really, I’ve got more important things to get to…

Who: New Jersey Devils at Minnesota Wild

When: 8PM, MSG

The Devils, first place in the Eastern Conference head out to the Midwest to face the Wild – 11th in the Western Conference and not particularly antsy to do anything about it.

Sunday January 3, 2010

Sunday is a jam packed day for New York sports. I will be enjoying it in Atlantic City while celebrating my father’s 66th birthday. Happy birthday, Pop.

Who: New York Giants at Minnesota Vikings

When: 1PM, FOX

The G-Men wrap up a disappointing 2009 campaign that makes me physically ill to even discuss Sunday afternoon in Minnesota. My only hope is that somehow the Giants are able to continue making Brett Favre look like he did down the stretch last year for the Jets and remind him of the last time he faced this team in the 2008 NFC Championship Game. This will hopefully mean the Vikings get an outdoor playoff game, instead of remaining comfortable inside a dome (either Metro or Super) for the duration of the playoffs. I’m not sure I’ll even watch, the results of the Giants e-mailing the game in last week while working from home has me looking for anything else to distract me (like a craps table).

Who: New York Knicks at Indiana Pacers

When: 6PM, MSG

The Knicks! Who knew? Nate’s alive and well and reminding New Yorkers that another Nate exists besides Chace Crawford’s character on Gossip Girl (plug). Will D’Antoni ride the spark plug’s hot hand, or will he be banished to the back of the bench for another month (he went from 12/1/09 – 1/1/10  between appearances). Tune in and hope that these questions are resolved before the day’s main event…

Who: Cincinnati Bengals at New York Jets

When: 8:20PM, NBC

Time to shut the old girl down, indeed. The Jets will follow up great performances by U2 and Bruce Springsteen and the E-Street Band and one shit sandwich from the Giants in closing down 30+ years in Giants Stadium. Now, I want the Jets to win. I really do. I like Rex Ryan. I like the mean defense and I’m most especially looking forward to the Ocho Cinco / Darrelle Revis show wherever they line up. I just know how this story ends. I’m a Mets fan. That’s analagous to being a Jets fan. It’s torture. They continually get the hopes of their fans up only to crush them into more pieces than you can count. In 2008, I watched the Mets close down Shea Stadium from 12 rows behind home plate. It effectively ended with a Wes Helms home run eliminating the Mets from the playoffs one day after a masterful performance from Johan Santana. Now here, we are, waiting on a Jets collapse. Most Jets fans will talk positively about how Ryan has brought a different attitude to the team but this is embedded in the name, the uniform, and the culture of the franchise. I fear a heartbreaking Jets collapse in one of two ways – a game they are never in and put up maybe 3 points, or a game they lead the whole way only to crap away at the end. Either way, I hope I am wrong and the Jets emerge victorious Sunday night.

STAMP OF THE WEEK

Longhorns. Colt McCoy follows up on the performance by fellow God Squad member Tim Tebow and leads the Longhorns to their second BCS title in the same place Vince Young did 4 years ago.

Texas – 31

Alabama – 20

Hook ‘em and STAMP IT.

**Keep watch this week as I will continue my assault on the dumbfounding commentary found on MetsBlog.com — they’ve done themselves a favor over the past few days and kept from making any asinine statements. Yes, it’s a new year but it’s only a matter of time.**

NUTS & BOLTS: GALLO, GANG GREEN, & THE G-MEN

Danilo Gallinari gives his best Beyonce impression in this video of him singing “Halo”. (SportsCracklePop)

The Colts did the Jets a huge favor by sitting their star players in the 2nd half of yesterday’s game. Many fans are up in arms about the Colts “giving up” on this game, but the Jets are unapologetic and their playoff hopes are alive. Loquacious line backer Bart Scott sums it up best, “I’m not apologizing for jack.” (NY Post)

The Giants said goodbye to Giants Stadium yesterday and did it in style. A complete blowout loss to the Panthers. Both the offense and defense looked poor, at best, and star DE Osi Umenyiora made it sound like he is uncertain of his future in NY. (Newark Star-Ledger)

There are far too many “end of the decade” top 10 lists floating around the internets these days, but the Daily News have given us the top 10 NY athletes of the decade. I actually enjoyed this one. (NY Daily News)

Broncos WR Brandon Stokley was ejected from Sunday’s game for making contact with an official while arguing a call. Anyone who had Stokley in the “which Denver receiver named ‘Brandon’ will be ejected from a game first” pool is surprisingly sitting pretty right about now. (FanHouse)

The Buffalo Bills have reportedly reached out to Charlie Weis about a coaching position. Could this mean they have their eyes on Irish QB Jimmy Clausen with their upcoming top 10 draft pick? Perhaps. (WIVB.com)

SATURDAY MORNING SCREW: MY FIRST TIME

Brandon Jacobs and the G-Men should run over the Redskins Monday night...

Brandon Jacobs and the G-Men should run over the Redskins Monday night...

We’re starting a new thing at BLS where we’ll walk you through the weekend’s local games (with our spin of course) and wrap things up with my inaugural STAMP OF THE WEEK. So, here goes nothin…

Saturday December 19 (aka “Today”)

Who: New York Rangers (15-16-3, 33pts) @ Philadelphia Flyers (15-16-2, 32pts)

When: 7PM, MSG Network

What: The Rangers travel through a snowstorm down I-95 this evening to take on the Flyers for the first time this season. The two teams split six match ups last year straight down the middle. The Flyers are the only Atlantic Division team with less points than the Blueshirts, so hopefully the Rangers can score a flurry of goals and grab the two points in Philly.

Who: Rutgers Scarlet Knights (8-4) vs. UCF Knights (8-4) – St. Petersburg Bowl presented by Beef ‘O’ Brady’s

When: 8PM, ESPN

What: Rutgers kicks off bowl season tonight at the Trop in good old St. Pete. The Scarlet Knights have dropped two out of their last three games and would like to close the season a positive note. They will likely be without senior wideout Tim Brown (not to be confused with senior citizen Tim Brown), who averaged more than 20 yards per reception in each of the past two seasons.

Sunday December 20 (aka “Tomorrow”)

Who: New York Jets (7-6) vs. Atlanta Falcons (6-7)

When: 1PM, FOX

What: The Jets play host to the Falcons on Sunday afternoon with major playoff implications for both squads. The Jets got some help Thursday night with the Colts knocking off Jacksonville, but they need to keep winning. Mark Sanchez is due to return to action and I stand by my belief that he can’t possibly be any worse than Kellen Clemens (is he one of Roger’s sons?). The Falcons’ hopes are on life support and things don’t look any better for them if Matt Ryan and Michael Turner miss this match up. Lastly, I am thoroughly uncomfortable with the idea of Darrelle Revis covering Roddy White during my fantasy football semi-finals.

Who: New York Knicks (9-17) vs. Charlotte Bobcats (10-14)

When: 7:30PM, MSG

What: The Knicks try to avenge a loss earlier in the week in Charlotte as the Bobcats visit the World’s Most Famous Arena.  Mike D’Antoni’s crew has been playing better of late, even avoiding the embarrassment of losing to the LA Clippers Friday night.

Monday December 21

Who: New York Giants (7-6) vs. Washington Redskins (4-9)

When: 8:30PM, ESPN

What: The Giants hopes may not control their own destiny in the NFC playoff race, but they need to defeat the Redskins at FedEx Field on Monday if they want to stay in the thick of things. The Redskins sucks, their GM quit this week and they are apparently negotiating with the perennially tan Mike Shanahan to man their sidelines next season even though they already have a coach… If you can call him that.  The Giants offense looked great  last week, and their defense should return to form playing against a Redskins outfit that is missing its top three running backs and has had trouble scoring for two years now.

STAMP OF THE WEEK

I’m going to use my first projection in this space to both promote my favorite college basketball team and upset the OCD by predicting failure for his hometown university.

The North Carolina Tar Heels tip off this afternoon against the Texas Longhorns in the first basketball game played in Cowboys Stadium. This 10th ranked Heels team is battled tested early, already having played games against highly ranked teams Syracuse, Kentucky, Michigan State and Ohio State. While they’ve dropped a couple of those games, the Heels will prevail over the Longhorns this afternoon as they start running from the jump and don’t let up until the Longhorns tap out.

Heels by a dozen. STAMP IT.

G-MEN GET JACKED UP BY CHARGERS’ FINAL DRIVE

NFL/

The Giants let one get away on Sunday against the Chargers. New York allowed San Diego to execute a 4th quarter comeback and have now dropped four straight after winning their first five.

The Giants didn’t exactly give the game away — unless you count the final drive. Eli Manning had a pretty good game and the defense played better. Brandon Jacobs was also effective though he only received 11 carries. The performances had the Giants up 17-14 with 8:58 to play. However, the Giants could only muster a field goal on their next drive and set Rivers and the Chargers up for a comeback.

In just 1:46, Rivers drove 80 yards for a score. The San Diego quarterback had one huge completion where he spotted Darren Sproles split out in man coverage. Rivers ran the play as quickly as possible and hit the speedy running back for a 21 yard pass that set up Vincent Jackson’s touchdown not he next play.

New York now sits at 5-4 and Atlanta comes to town next week. Considering the remaining schedule, the Giants need a win against the Falcons to get back on track. The next three games include Atlanta, Denver, and then Dallas. New York fans better hope they come out of that stretch having won two of three.
