RANGERS-ISLANDERS WILL BE FIRST 3D NHL BROADCAST

If you have a few thousand dollars to spare, you might want to pick up a new 3D-capable television. Aside from the World Cup this summer, the NHL has opted to broadcast one of its games in 3D. Next week’s Rangers-Islanders matchup will be the first hockey game broadcast in 3D.

The game will be available on Cablevision and may be available on other services. The production team will have to adjust their typical setup for the game. The game will be shot using five different 3D cameras that are set up on lower platforms than standard cameras.

VIDEO: RANGERS FAN PROPOSES AT GAME, FAILS

Nick proposes to Melissa at Madison Square Garden and gets denied

Talk about your all-time backfires. File this under: things that seem like good ideas but clearly are not. A zealous Ranger fan attended the matchup between the Rangers and Lightning yesterday to do more than just watch the game. He figured he’d make a grand gesture and propose to his girlfriend on the jumbotron. Instead, he was embarrassed in front of 20,000 people in the arena and thousands more watching at home.

During the second period, the man’s message flashed on the MSG scoreboard saying, “Melissa, Will you be my Blueshirt bride? – Nick” Melissa was immediately overcome by emotions — which seemed logical. But other than being surprised, she doesn’t really react as “Nick” points to the message. When she’s finally able to uncover her mouth, Melissa gives him the stare of death before turning around and leaving while shaking her head. The announcers have some fun with it and one even says, “Let’s talk about a pre-nup.” Ouch.

RENT-A-RUSSIAN: 7 NHL TEAMS VYING FOR KOVALCHUK?

Ilya Kovalchuk is a dominant offensive player and he might not be a member of the Thrashers for much longer. Atlanta GM Don Waddell has informed Kovalchuk that he will probably be traded in the near future. If the Thrashers move Kovalchuk, it would be one of the biggest trades in recent memory.

Kovalchuk is a legitimate offensive star. He has 615 points in 594 career games including 328 goals. The only two active players who have averaged more points per game in their career are Dany Heatley and Teemu Selanne. However, there are also a couple of a reasons not to deal for the Russian. His defensive effort is suspect and he’s currently in the last year of his contract. Kovalchuk has already declined an extension from the Thrashers that would have paid him around $10 million per year. He’s rumored to be seeking close to the league maximum of $11.2 million a season.

Even so, there are a number of teams bidding for his services. TSN reports that the Chicago Blackhawks, Boston Bruins, Philadelphia Flyers, Calgary Flames, New Jersey Devils, Los Angeles Kings and New York Rangers have all expressed interest in Kovalchuk. Those teams have been told that Atlanta wants “one top six forward, one top four defenceman and a prospect or high end draft pick” in return for their star. Considering the price to get him and the price to keep him, it will be interesting to see how this plays out.

Pundit Larry Brooks thinks that the Thrashers’ asking price for Kovalchuk is “absurd.” Brooks thinks the deal would be Marc Staal or Michael Del Zotto plus Ryan Callahan or Brandon Dubinsky. The other potential deal could be Dubinsky plus a prospect and a first round draft pick. While the price is steep, it doesn’t seem “absurd.” The talent is worth parting with if Kovalchuk is more than just a rental. Though, it would seem like the Rangers would have to try to dump more salary to make it work.

If the Rangers still want a superstar, they should go after Kovalchuk. Not too long ago they were rumored to be seeking Vincent Lecavalier whose contract pays him just about $8 million per year. Yes, it will be a nightmare to try and fit Gaborik, Lundqvist, Drury, and Kovalchuk under the cap. But that’s a risk worth taking if the Rangers think they can sign him to an extension. In reality, each of those guys except Drury is worth the money. So the problem isn’t really the money that Kovalchuk will make anyway. It’s not like other teams don’t have similar situations. Just look at the big money players that the Red Wings and Penguins fit under the cap.

CENTERPIECE: RANGERS CLOSE TO DEAL FOR JOKINEN

Olli Jokinen may be traded to the Rangers for Ales Kotalik and Christopher Higgins

Ales Kotalik didn’t travel with the Rangers to face the Avalanche on Sunday night. That brought speculation that he would be dealt in the near future. Turns out that may very well be true as the Rangers are close to landing Finnish center Olli Jokinen.

TSN’s Darren Dreger reports that Kotalik along with Chris Higgins will be sent to Calgary for Jokinen and Brandon Prust. Jokinen currently has 11 goals and 24 assists in 55 games with the Flames. Kotalik had been scratched in 8 of the last 9 games and has tallied eight goals and 14 assists on the season. Chris Higgins had a measly six goals and eight assists through 54 games.  Prust is mostly a tough guy and has tallied 98 penalty minutes versus five points and 23 shots in 42 games.

The deal gives the Rangers more flexibility by unloading the Kotalik’s contract with two years still left. Jokinen is a quality player and he might thrive with the Rangers. If he doesn’t, New York won’t really have a problem letting him walk when his contract expires after the season. Trading for Jokinen may be a sign that the Rangers want to try Brandon Dubinsky at wing. Jokinen is currently the only Scandinavian skater on the Rangers’ roster. Glen Sather could go a long way to redeeming himself if he can also manage to deal Wade Redden or Michael Rozsival.

RANGERS 1 HURRICANES 5

Ryan Callahan scored the lone goal for the Rangers in their fourth straight loss.  Lundqvist had an awful night in net and had only 19 saves on 24 shots.  John Tortorella must’ve thought Wade Redden was playing worse because he was benched after nine shifts.  Sergie Samsonov and Eric Staal both scored twice in the win. Brian Rolston scored for the Devil while Adam Mair tallied for the Sabres.  Both goalies were stellar as Martin Brodeur saved 30 of 31 shots and Ryan Miller stopped 39 of 40.  Jochen Hecht and Jason Pominville both beat Brodeur in the shootout to secure the extra point. [AP]

NETS 102 CLIPPERS 87

RANGERS WORKING ON VINCENT LECAVALIER TRADE?

Vincent Lecavlier's potential trade to the Rangers

Yahoo’s Mark Miller reported early Monday morning that the Rangers may be seeking Vincent Lecavalier. On the season, Lecavalier has 11 goals and 34 assists. The Rangers believe the former first overall pick could be the answer to their scoring woes.

Miller reports that the deal may include Brandon Dubinsky, Matt Gilroy, and Wade Redden. Also, Lecavalier has a no-trade clause but he’s probably willing to waive it to get out of Tampa. The deal would provide a much-needed change of scenery for Tampa Bay captain who has been somewhat disappointing as of late.

Lecavalier has a monster contract that the Lightning would like to unload. And that could end up killing the potential deal. Word is that the Lightning don’t want to add Redden’s bloated contract — and who would blame them? Dubinsky recently signed a two-year deal so his salary is more than manageable until after the 2010-2011 season. Matt Gilroy also has a contract that would make him fairly easy to move.

On the surface, it doesn’t seem like a bad deal. Vincent Lecavalier can be a superstar at times and the Rangers aren’t giving up a ton. However, I think this move would be a quick fix that could hurt the team in the long run. Giving up Gilroy and Redden in the same deal eliminates two defensemen from an already-thin rotation. To put it bluntly, the Rangers would have a pathetic defense corps without those two. Lecavalier’s contract creates problems as well. He has an insane 11-year deal worth $85 million that runs until he’s 40. Having both Lecavalier and Gaborik on the books at the same time would create a potential salary cap nightmare. On top of all of that, Brandon Dubinsky is, in my opinion, the Rangers’ second-best skater. Dubinsky leads the team in +/- at +11 while half of the team is negative. His contract also makes him a great deal as a first or second line center.

Vincent Lecavalier could help the Rangers — but not in this deal. The guy makes six times what Dubinsky does (for the next TEN years) and will cost the Rangers one-third of their defensemen. The only way it might make sense is if the Rangers can deal enough of their big contracts (Redden AND Rozsival?) to offset Lecavalier’s massive cap hit.
