RANGERS-ISLANDERS WILL BE FIRST 3D NHL BROADCAST

If you have a few thousand dollars to spare, you might want to pick up a new 3D-capable television. Aside from the World Cup this summer, the NHL has opted to broadcast one of its games in 3D. Next week’s Rangers-Islanders matchup will be the first hockey game broadcast in 3D.

The game will be available on Cablevision and may be available on other services. The production team will have to adjust their typical setup for the game. The game will be shot using five different 3D cameras that are set up on lower platforms than standard cameras.

ALEXANDER OVECHKIN GOT A HAIRCUT FROM HIS MOM

The before and after pictures of Alexander Ovechkin's haircut

Alexander Ovechkin used to promote the Hair Cuttery as his preferred destination to get his mop trimmed. The sponsorship deal must have lapsed because Ovie recently admitted that he gets his hair cut elsewhere. No, the man who’s topped the NHL in goals doesn’t go to an expensive salon. Instead, he gets free haircuts from Mama Ovechkin.

SIDNEY CROSBY’S GOLD MEDAL GEAR GOT STOLEN

Sidney Crosby came home from Vancouver with a shiny new gold medal. But he left without a bunch of his hockey gear. During Crosby’s now (in)famous celebration, he ditched his stick, helmet, mouthguard and gloves. Apparently, somebody snatched them before they ended up back in the locker room.

TSN’s Bob McKenzie reports that Crosby’s stick and gloves went missing after the on-ice celebration. With all of the players’ equipment on the ice, staffers had to round up all of the gear and put it in a bin near the Canadian locker room. At some point, Crosby’s gloves and stick disappeared.  McKenzie believes that Crosby eventually got his mouthguard and helmet back. But the stick and gloves are still missing.

GALLERY: HILARY DUFF “SERVICING” MIKE COMRIE?

Hilary Duff is featured on this site fairly often. Currently, she’s the girlfriend of hockey player Mike Comrie. The most recent shots of Duff aren’t particularly revealing. But they may show another “sexy” side of Ms. Duff.

Duff and Comrie were in Hawaii when paparazzi snapped them in their hotel room. In a few of the shots, it looks like Hilary Duff is “going down” as the kids say. Or maybe she lost a contact lens? Gotta give Comrie the thumbs up for the “hand behind the head” enjoyment position.

You can check out a few more pics after the jump.

OLYMPIC GOALIE MASKS: LUNDQVIST’S LADY LIBERTY

Team Sweden Olympic Goalie Masks for the 2010 Vancouver Olympics

The 2010 Winter Olympics are upon us and that means that the best netminders in the world will all get new masks. In an effort to match their uniforms, most of the goalies get new airbrushed masks that often represent their country of origin and NHL club. Henrik Lundqvist’s mask for Sweden is no exception.

Handsome Hank may have the coolest helmet that we’ve seen so far. His headgear has Sweden’s blue and yellow color scheme along with the trademark “tre kronor” (three crowns). On the other side, Lunqvist is rocking a blue and yellow Lady Liberty to represent New York. The design is actually pretty similar to the helmet he wears with the Rangers pictured above.

If you’re interested you can also check out the mask designs of Team USA’s Ryan Miller, Tim Thomas, and Jonathan Quick, Evgeni Nabokov, Martin Brodeur, Jonas Gustavsson, Jonas Hiller, Marc-Andre Fleury, Tomas Vokoun, Canadian Women’s Masks, Stefan Liv, and Roberto Luongo.

Here’s Lundqvist’s mask:

ALEX OVECHKIN HAS SNAZZY SKATES, PHALLIC STICK

Alexander Ovechkin practices for Russia at the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver

Alexander Ovechkin isn’t exactly a slave to fashion. He famously wore flip flops on the red carpet at the MuchMusic (basically Canadian MTV) Video Awards earlier this year. He was even denied entry into a Las Vegas club due to his love of wearing flip flops. He’s also dressed up like this before. So it’s no surprise that Ovie wants to set his own trends at the 2010 Olympics.

Teammate Tomas Fleischmann started the buzz about Ovechkin’s skates by spreading the initial rumors about his footwear. Some reporters believed that Ovie would wear all red skates for the Olympics. To that, he replied, “I will have a twist of my own. It’s a secret. You will see it for yourself.”

Alexander Ovechkin's custom CCM skate chassis with a demon, fire, and #8

That twist was unveiled yesterday in Russia’s practice in Vancouver. Ovechkin was sporting a new set of CCM skates decked out with yellow laces and custom-painted chassis. The design includes Ovechkin’s #8 and some sort of demon or goat man on the back of the chassis. Maybe it’s just Satan… and I don’t mean Miroslav. In addition to the skates, I noticed that Alex tapes the handle of his stick in a very particular fashion. The configuration up top allows Ovechkin to get superior grip on his shaft.

The Russian winger is currently skating with Capitals’ teammate Alexander Semin and the two are centered by the Red Wings’ Pavel Datsyuk. Ovechkin and company are currently favored to win the tournament. Olympic hockey opens up today when the USA takes on Switzerland. Russia plays their first game tomorrow against the Czech Republic.

VIDEO: RANGERS FAN PROPOSES AT GAME, FAILS

Nick proposes to Melissa at Madison Square Garden and gets denied

Talk about your all-time backfires. File this under: things that seem like good ideas but clearly are not. A zealous Ranger fan attended the matchup between the Rangers and Lightning yesterday to do more than just watch the game. He figured he’d make a grand gesture and propose to his girlfriend on the jumbotron. Instead, he was embarrassed in front of 20,000 people in the arena and thousands more watching at home.

During the second period, the man’s message flashed on the MSG scoreboard saying, “Melissa, Will you be my Blueshirt bride? – Nick” Melissa was immediately overcome by emotions — which seemed logical. But other than being surprised, she doesn’t really react as “Nick” points to the message. When she’s finally able to uncover her mouth, Melissa gives him the stare of death before turning around and leaving while shaking her head. The announcers have some fun with it and one even says, “Let’s talk about a pre-nup.” Ouch.

Here’s the video:

TEAM USA GOALIE MASKS FOR THE 2010 OLYMPICS

Sarah Palin goalie mask

Team USA is carrying three goalies this year including Tim Thomas, Ryan Miller, and Jonathan Quick. When the Olympics start, all three will be sporting custom airbrushed goalie masks. Unfortunately, the masks are quite fugly. And no, none of them have Sarah Palin painted on the side.

FALLEN STAR: DALLAS DEALS FOR A NEW GOALIE

The big time shake ups continued in the NHL on Tuesday. Days after dealing star winger Ilya Kovalchuk, the Thrashers dealt goalie Kari Lehtonen. Atlanta sent Lehtonen to Dallas for a prospect and a pick.

The move puts a big question mark on the Stars’ goalie situation. They already have long-time starter Marty Turco and Alex Auld who has been receiving the bulk of the starts lately. That suggests that the Stars may try to move Turco before the trade deadline. Though, Stars GM Joe Nieuwendyk has already said that Dallas plans to keep three goalies for now.

The Stars dealt prospect Ivan Vishnevskiy along with a fourth-round pick to Atlanta. Vishnevskiy was rated as Dallas’ top prospect by Hockey’s Future. That’s a lot to give up for Lehtonen, who will be a restricted free agent, unless they’re willing to stick with him.

BE-DEVILED: DEVILS LANDS STAR WINGER KOVALCHUK

The Devils made one of the biggest trades in recent NHL history when they landed Ilya Kovalchuk. The Russian currently boasts the third-highest points per game average among active players. The Devils sent a package that included Niclas Bergfors, Johnny Oduya, Patrice Cormier, and a first round pick.

Even if this is a half-season rental, the Devil got a pretty good deal. It’s tough to give up Oduya but the rest of the players sent are more than reasonable. Niclas Bergfors had been seeing less playing time as he was in the middle of a scoring slump. At the same time, Patrice Cormier is currently indefinitely suspended for a vicious elbow he launched in the juniors. The move should provide an immediate scoring boost for the Devils.

Long-term, the Devils may have a decent shot at re-signing Kovalchuk. Oduya accounts for a $3 million cap hit while Bergfors came in at $500,000. The Devils will come in at only $41.1 million with the contracts they have in place for next year. While they can fit Kovalchuk under the cap, they may have to decide between him and scheduled unrestricted free agent Paul Martin. Martin makes $4.5 million this year and is probably due for a raise. Other than Kovalchuk, the Devil’s actually have a top-heavy predicament with their forwards’ contracts. New Jersey has seven forwards that make more than $2.5 million this year and all of them are under contract for 2010-2011.

RENT-A-RUSSIAN: 7 NHL TEAMS VYING FOR KOVALCHUK?

Ilya Kovalchuk is a dominant offensive player and he might not be a member of the Thrashers for much longer. Atlanta GM Don Waddell has informed Kovalchuk that he will probably be traded in the near future. If the Thrashers move Kovalchuk, it would be one of the biggest trades in recent memory.

Kovalchuk is a legitimate offensive star. He has 615 points in 594 career games including 328 goals. The only two active players who have averaged more points per game in their career are Dany Heatley and Teemu Selanne. However, there are also a couple of a reasons not to deal for the Russian. His defensive effort is suspect and he’s currently in the last year of his contract. Kovalchuk has already declined an extension from the Thrashers that would have paid him around $10 million per year. He’s rumored to be seeking close to the league maximum of $11.2 million a season.

Even so, there are a number of teams bidding for his services. TSN reports that the Chicago Blackhawks, Boston Bruins, Philadelphia Flyers, Calgary Flames, New Jersey Devils, Los Angeles Kings and New York Rangers have all expressed interest in Kovalchuk. Those teams have been told that Atlanta wants “one top six forward, one top four defenceman and a prospect or high end draft pick” in return for their star. Considering the price to get him and the price to keep him, it will be interesting to see how this plays out.

Pundit Larry Brooks thinks that the Thrashers’ asking price for Kovalchuk is “absurd.” Brooks thinks the deal would be Marc Staal or Michael Del Zotto plus Ryan Callahan or Brandon Dubinsky. The other potential deal could be Dubinsky plus a prospect and a first round draft pick. While the price is steep, it doesn’t seem “absurd.” The talent is worth parting with if Kovalchuk is more than just a rental. Though, it would seem like the Rangers would have to try to dump more salary to make it work.

If the Rangers still want a superstar, they should go after Kovalchuk. Not too long ago they were rumored to be seeking Vincent Lecavalier whose contract pays him just about $8 million per year. Yes, it will be a nightmare to try and fit Gaborik, Lundqvist, Drury, and Kovalchuk under the cap. But that’s a risk worth taking if the Rangers think they can sign him to an extension. In reality, each of those guys except Drury is worth the money. So the problem isn’t really the money that Kovalchuk will make anyway. It’s not like other teams don’t have similar situations. Just look at the big money players that the Red Wings and Penguins fit under the cap.

CENTERPIECE: RANGERS CLOSE TO DEAL FOR JOKINEN

Olli Jokinen may be traded to the Rangers for Ales Kotalik and Christopher Higgins

Ales Kotalik didn’t travel with the Rangers to face the Avalanche on Sunday night. That brought speculation that he would be dealt in the near future. Turns out that may very well be true as the Rangers are close to landing Finnish center Olli Jokinen.

TSN’s Darren Dreger reports that Kotalik along with Chris Higgins will be sent to Calgary for Jokinen and Brandon Prust. Jokinen currently has 11 goals and 24 assists in 55 games with the Flames. Kotalik had been scratched in 8 of the last 9 games and has tallied eight goals and 14 assists on the season. Chris Higgins had a measly six goals and eight assists through 54 games.  Prust is mostly a tough guy and has tallied 98 penalty minutes versus five points and 23 shots in 42 games.

The deal gives the Rangers more flexibility by unloading the Kotalik’s contract with two years still left. Jokinen is a quality player and he might thrive with the Rangers. If he doesn’t, New York won’t really have a problem letting him walk when his contract expires after the season. Trading for Jokinen may be a sign that the Rangers want to try Brandon Dubinsky at wing. Jokinen is currently the only Scandinavian skater on the Rangers’ roster. Glen Sather could go a long way to redeeming himself if he can also manage to deal Wade Redden or Michael Rozsival.
