YANKS UP 2-0 IN ALDS AS TEX GETS TASTE OF PLAYOFF PIE

Winning in the playoffs is fun

Winning in the playoffs is fun

Mark Teixeira hit a walk-off laser beam home run in the bottom of the 11th inning to beat the Minnesota Twins 4-3 and put the Yankees up 2-0 in the ALDS. After an action packed game with each team having chances (and failing) to score multiple times, it felt like the game should have been over a few times. Mark Teixeira had the final decision, and he decided to end the game in the 11th. Alex Rodriguez can not go unmentioned because he hit an absolutely mammoth 2 run shot to tie the game in the bottom of the 9th. It was nice to see the Yanks’ 3 and 4 hitters get their “Yankee Moments” out of the way in the same game. Of course, Tex being responsible for the walk-off he was the recipient of the Yankees first playoff pie. I questioned whether there would be playoff pie, but was quickly reminded that Pie Man shows no mercy. Playoff pie is here, Yankee fans; and it’s here to stay. Check out some awesome pics after the jump.

YANKS WIN 15TH WALKOFF, PIE GOES TO JUAN MI-RANDOM

Hello, New York! My name is Juan Miranda!

Hello, New York! My name is Juan Miranda!

Welcome to the New York Yankees, Juan Miranda. After lining an RBI base hit off perennial goat Kyle Farnsworth’s legs, Juan Miranda and the Yanks defeated the Kansas City Royals 4-3 for the Yankees 15th walk-off victory of the season. The relatively unknown Miranda bat .290 and drove in 90 runs while playing 1B at for Triple-A Scranton this season. Rookie or not, AJ Burnett stuck around after pitching well tonight and provided his signature pie routine.

YANKS’ VICTORY, PIE: SWISH-A-LICIOUS

Nick Swisher and the New York Yankees won their 13th walk-off game of 2009 on Tuesday night. Of course, with the walk-off win, there is walk-off pie. And when there is walk-off pie, BigLeagueScrew is on it like white on rice. The proud recipient of AJ Burnett’s pie job this day was Nick Swisher. The zany first year Yankee has made an indelible impression on teammates and fans thus far, and I know I’ve been waiting all year for Swish to get his pie. The winning shot was Swisher’s 2nd Home Run of the game, and 26th overall on the year. I also wanted to take this opportunity to point out how incredible Nick Swisher has hit on the road this season. Check out his splits below (tonight’s stats not included).

G AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI BB K SB CS AVG OBP SLG OPS
Home 62 180 25 37 10 0 3 20 50 50 0 0 .206 .381 .311 .692
Away 68 250 47 71 19 1 21 55 36 62 0 0 .284 .370 .620 .990

Swish magically turns into Babe Ruth when he puts on the road grays. Its a tad surprising when you consider all the commotion regarding NYS as a hitters haven, but hey, someone’s gotta hit on the road. Swish, congrats on almost tying your season total of HRs at home in one game. Check out our great shots of the pieing after the jump.

YANKEES WIN, CANO PIED FOR TEAM-LEADING 3RD TIME

Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano hit a 3-run walk off home run to win last night’s game 5-2 over the Chicago White Sox. In doing so, he earned himself his team-leading 3rd pie job. Cano has drawn the ire of some over-anxious Yankee fans about his ability to hit with runners in scoring position. While this home run, and his other game winning hits aren’t enough to erase that noise in NY we will say that not many second basemen stroke moon shots like last nights dinger. Of course, with  the win and AJ Burnett’s now signature walk off celebration we at BigLeagueScrew have the pictures and play by play of the ambush after the jump.

AJ makes this face pretty much every time. I can picture the sound he makes too.

Yanks, AJ Strike Again in the 9th

The Yankees are starting to make a habit of these walk off victories. After a game tying 2 run home run off the bat of Alex Rodriguez, Robinson Cano singled, stole 2nd, and was singled in by Melky Cabrera. What followed was what has quickly become a Yankee tradition.

Shortly after the scoring run came come, AJ Burnett crept along the dugout and sought out his next pie victim.  The Yankees starting pitcher then delivered the “pie job” to Melky — but he also managed to cream Robinson Cano at the same time.  Burnett has made more of a splash in New York for throwing pies than for throwing pitches.  Hopefully, that will change soon.  One question still remains: will Burnett slam a pie in Jeter’s face when he gets a walk off hit?  Only time will tell.  With the Yankees penchant for comeback wins, we can only assume AJ will get the opportunity to unload a shaving cream bomb some time in the near future.

ARod Gets Pied

For those of you that didn’t catch it today… Alex Rodriguez hit a walk off homer in the 11th inning today to defeat the Minnesota Twins.  But you may have missed the hilarious turn of events after the home run.

After ARod rounded the bases, he was greeted by hugs from an energized team.  The YES Network’s Kim Jones was about to interview the star third basemen when he was smacked in the face with a cream pie.  ARod replied that he “loved it” and that he was hungry.  He had to stand there with cream on his face for a few seconds until he was given a towel.
