RANGERS WIN STREAK DIES IN VICIOUS SHARK ATTACK

Sharks Rangers Hockey

The Rangers had been riding a massive seven game win streak coming into Monday’s game against the Sharks. Had they won the game, the eight-game win streak would have been the Rangers’ longest since 1975. Instead, they got decimated by San Jose.

There were a couple good things to take from the game. The Rangers actually opened up the game with the first two goals. Michael Del Zotto continued his hot play by scoring his fourth goal of the season on the power play. The rookie defenseman has accumulated four goals and five assists in nine games. Amazingly, that’s good enough for the third highest point total on the Rangers behind newcomers Marian Gaborik (12) and Vaclav Prospal (11). Del Zotto seems to have cemented his spot on the first power play unit.

Unfortunately, backup netminder Steve Valiquette played like Swiss cheese and gave up five goals on 18 shots. The Rangers allowed the Sharks to score six unanswered goals until finally putting up a meaningless goal with less than three minutes left.

John Tortorella was asked which aspects of the Rangers’ game caused the loss and he simply replied, “Penalties.” Wade Redden and Marian Gaborik were both called for penalties which resulted in two Sharks’ power play goals. Sean Avery racked up two minor penalties and Brashear sat in the box for two minutes even though he only played 6:05 in the game.  The Rangers had 14 penalty minutes as a team.

ESPN MAKES “EXPERT” PICKS FOR 2009 NHL SEASON

Red Wings Rangers Hockey

ESPN covers hockey? Well, they do sometimes and they’ve unveiled their annual expert picks for the 2009-2010 NHL season. But I don’t put much stock in them. Last year, only one out of the seven experts chose the Penguins to make it to the Stanley Cup Finals. None of them picked the Pens to win. Hilariously, more people picked the Rangers (3) to win the Atlantic Division last year than the Penguins (2). So, if you still care, the 2009 “expert” picks are below. Vegas has the Penguins, Bruins, Capitals, Red Wings, Canucks/Flames (tie), and Sharks as their frontrunners for division crowns. As a reminder, the NHL opener is Thursday night on Versus.

BLOCKBUSTER NHL DEAL LOOMING?

83818404MH073_NHL_All_Star_

There may be a huge deal about to go down in the NHL. It is believed that a three way deal between San Jose, Ottawa, and Los Angeles is in the works that would move a couple of disgruntled players. ESPN’s John Buccigross is reporting that in the deal the Kings would send Alexander Frolov and Jarret Stoll to the Senators, Patrick Marleau would go from San Jose to the Kings, while Ottawa would send Dany Heatley to San Jose. While ESPN has said the deal is done, the parties involved have denied this. Kings GM Dean Lombardi called the report “complete bull”. I’m not exactly sure if this deal will actually happen — but we may see both Heatley and Marleau moved in any case.

SAN JOSE SHARKS SINK 5-YEAR CAPTAIN

The Sharks were a popular pick to win the Cup last year. They entered the playoffs as the NHL’s number one overall seed. That was until they were dropped by 8th seeded Anaheim. Patrick Marleau has been the captain of the Sharks for some time now. He came to San Jose as the 2nd pick in the 1997 NHL Draft but never quite lived up to the hype. Marleau is an excellent hockey player but he’s always lacked edge. Yesterday, he was stripped of his captaincy and head coach Todd McLellan was click to state “nobody’s our captain.” Early speculation points to defenseman Dan Boyle as a potential replacement. In any case, it looks like Marleau may be departing San Jose altogether.

Via San Jose Mercury:

We discovered the answer Monday in an almost casual fashion, courtesy of Sharks coach Todd McLellan. The Mercury News’ hockey guru, David Pollak, stopped by the team’s practice rink to check on the team and McLellan offered the demotion bulletin.

“At this point,” McLellan said, “nobody’s our captain.”

McLellan then said the captaincy would stay vacant — sort of like a temporarily unoccupied condominium — until at least the middle of next month. That’s when training camp opens. Between now and then, McLellan and general manager Doug Wilson will continue to take the roster’s temperature and jointly make the decision.

McLellan, it should be noted, did not rule out Marleau being renamed captain when the choice is announced. But to believe that will actually happen, you would also have to believe that Mike Vernon will be returning to play goalie.

Who will be the captain instead? Three names come to mind. The most likely candidate is Dan Boyle, the defenseman who arrived a year ago in a trade from Tampa Bay, where he won a Stanley Cup. Boyle quickly set an example of intensity on the ice and wasn’t afraid to call out his teammates in public when necessary.
