ESPN MAGAZINE “BODY ISSUE” WILL FEATURE JOBA

joba_chamberlain_semi-nude

As you may know, ESPN the Magazine’s next issue is the “Body Issue.” The premise is that they have different athletes nude and semi-nude photoshoots. I’d guess that the goal is to “appreciate the human body” but they’ve chosen some wacky models. The most random seem to come from baseball where ESPN has chosen Joba Chamberlain and Nelson Cruz. Both are quite burly fellows and calling them “easy on the eyes” would be quite a compliment. The picture above is a painting of Joba from some random artist… and I hope his ESPN shoot can live up to that high standard.  Nipple ring included.

Another strange addition to the issue is a spread with hockey player Zdeno Chara. Chara is the tallest player in the NHL at 6′9″ and he’s also extremely weird looking.  They’ve also chosen Bill Guerin from the NHL.  The last time we saw him, he was rocking one of the best hobo beards in sports history. In terms of women, it’s all people you’ve never heard of plus Gina Carano and Serena Williams. Word is that Tiger Woods turned ESPN down. Here’s the list of athletes in the feature as reported by Michael McCarthy from USA Today:

NFL: Adrian Peterson

MLB: Joba Chamberlain, Nelson Cruz

Tennis: Serena Williams, James Blake

NBA: Superman, aka Dwight Howard

NHL: Zdeno Chara, Bill Guerin

NASCAR: Carl Edwards, and someone for the over-50 crowd, Mark Martin.

LPGA: Christina Kim

MMA: Gina Carano, Randy Couture

Horse racing: Alexis Solis

Soccer: Oguchi Onyewu

Surfing: Claire Bevilacqua (Photo by James Dimmock/ESPN The Magazine), Laird Hamilton

Boxing: Manny Pacquiao

Softball: Jessica Mendoza

SERENA WILLIAMS BEATS MOTHER NATURE, HER PERIOD

58358504

Serena Williams may not have won the US Open, but she recently won another big match. The younger Williams sister is the spokesperson for Tampax now. In their new campaign, Serena faces off with Mother Nature who represents “that time of the month.” I know that even tampon companies have to advertise, but I found Mother Nature’s comments a bit coarse. I’m pretty much talking about when she says, “There is plenty of blood… but none of it’s bad.” Extreme.  The video is below.

STARS SHOW UP FOR ARTHUR ASHE KIDS DAY AT US OPEN

Stars of tennis and the entertainment world teamed up this weekend to support the National Junior Tennis and Learning network. The tennis stars included Maria Sharapova, Andy Roddick, Kim Clijsters, James Blame, Serena Williams, and Roger Federer. Will Arnett and Will Ferrell both showed up to provide some comic relief as well. I have to say… the tennis world does have a surprising amount of big stars these days.

WHITLOCK WHIFFS WITH ERIN ANDREWS COMMENTARY

Predictably, Jason Whitlock has offered up his take on the Erin Andrews fiasco. I don’t like Jason Whitlock. I actually think he’s a gifted writer, but he’s just a pot-stirrer. It bothers me to no end that such a controversial-for-the-sake-of-controversy personality can be considered legitimate. Whitlock carefully crafts an image that he’s a level-headed champion of truth, scrawling late into the night in his notebook of superior reason. However, the picture of Jason Whitlock is more likely to resemble an obsessive blog-refresher in a coffee shop that giggles while typing and manhandling pastries. Clearly, he’s a f*cking softy masquerading as a man with a big… pen.

His piece talks about the Erin Andrews incident for MAYBE 200 words — and it even has a photoshopped picture (Dan Levy destroys Whitlock for this) of Whitlock looking through a keyhole at Andrews. However, Whitlock manages to take a sharp right turn and go on an anti-blog, race baiting tirade that finishes with a love tap to ESPN’s jaw. Initially, he chooses to excoriate Deadspin contributors AJ Daulerio and Will Leitch. This quickly breaks down into Whitlock chastising the site for a Stuart Scott post they made TWO AND A HALF YEARS AGO.
