GALLERY: CLUB SI SWIMSUIT PARTY AT VANITY IN VEGAS

Cintia Dicker at the Club SI Swimsuit Party at Vanity in Las Vegas

Do anything cool this weekend? Chances are that it didn’t really compare to the Club SI Swimsuit Party at Vanity on Friday. The party was attended by the lovely women in the issue along with celebrities and sponsors.

Somehow, Mark McGrath was involved and also speaking on behalf of Sports Illustrated. He suggested that the event would be in Vegas for the next three years. Other than the models, celebrities in attendance included:

Members of the USA Sevens Rugby team competing here this week; Chris Phillips of Zowie Bowie with new date Felice Garcia, who impersonates Carrie Underwood in American Superstars at the Stratosphere; Adam; Dancing With the Stars’ Cheryl Burke and Chelsie Hightower, who are featured in the body-painted models section; Brooklyn with the 2010 edition seemingly glued to her hands; 2010 Miss Nevada USA Julianna Erdesz, who has just moved into her new Las Vegas home; and 2008 Miss Indiana Brittany Mason

After the jump, you can check out 25+ red carpet pics of Cintia Dicker, Cheryl Burke, Chelsie Hightower, Bar Refaeli, and Jessica Gomes.

OUT OF WRIGHT FIELD: LINDSEY VONN’S ‘SEXY’ SI COVER

The role of women in sports has long been a contentious subject.  Similarly has the idea that the Huffington Post actually bothers putting up anything worth reading.  Either way, I like to think about the role gender plays in professional athletics along with the occasional perusal of the aforementioned glorified collection of internet sticky-notes.  One article caught my attention in particular regarding Lindsey Vonn’s SI cover recently.

The heart of the debate was that cover image of the perky blonde Olympian and whether or not it represented more than a simple downhill skiing position.  Not to imply that I am channeling Norman Mailer here, but I really don’t think that Ms. Vonn is the victim of some Sports Illustrated orchestrated plot to publicly force a talented woman into submissive pseudo-sexual poses on the cover of a magazine.  Let’s be serious here, she’s a skier in a skiing pose.

The interesting problem that arose for me was the argument that women need to sexualize themselves to reach the upper levels of success.  I don’t necessarily disagree with this summation, but I do disagree that this is a gender-specific phenomenon.  Male athletes are also brought into filling particular socio-sexual roles in the public eye that seem a bit of a requirement to reach fame if not success.  For every bad Danica Patrick commercial with a bad car wash joke there are 10-15 images floating around of half naked men that more often than not are used to support unmentioned stereotypes along the lines of race and class far more than gender.

So, how is it that this only causes uproar with the seeming sexualization of a female athlete?  After all, she was bent over, but she wasn’t topless and kissing her own mirror image.

BLOGGER SEZ LINDSEY VONN’S SI COVER IS TOO SEXY

Just when you thought the abortion controversy was trying to steal the media spotlight another women’s issue comes into play via sports media. Lindsey Vonn made the cover of Sports Illustrated but — that has one female blogger throwing a hissy fit. Nicole LaVoi claims that the SI cover is just another example of women being “sexualized” in the media.

BAR REFAELI FOR THE 2010 SI SWIMSUIT EDITION

Bar Refaeli has been featured a handful of times on BLS. This time, she’s working on the 2010 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition. The Swimsuit Edition essentially anchor’s SI’s sales effort these days. They even branded a Southwest jet to show off Refaeli’s bikini body. Clearly, the model-formerly-known-as-Leo’s-girlfriend was a hit as last year’s cover girl. After the jump, you’ll find the leaked sneak preview images we came across from this year’s shoot.

JETS’ RYAN ATTEMPTS TO CATCH FLY WITH HONEY

Maybe Rex Ryan knows something that we don’t. Due to some jockeying over a contract extension Jets RB Leon Washington has been absent from OTAs this offseason. With training camp rapidly approaching, Washington, his agent Alvin Keels, and Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum have tried (albiet unsucessfully thus far) to hammer out a deal that would keep Little Leon in green and white for years to come. Considering the months long standoff that has taken place, it is somewhat surprising to see the comments from Jets’ coach Rex Ryan in a piece by SI.com’s Peter King.

Leon Washington evades defenders, contract extension

Leon Washington evades defenders, contract extension

King writes:

I think the one player I’m really looking forward to seeing under a new coach is all-purpose back Leon Washington of the Jets, whose head man, Rex Ryan, is certain to use Washington more liberally than he was used a year ago. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Washington — assuming he reports to camp on time, seeing that he’s in a contract dispute with the team right now — touch the ball 300 times this year. Last year, he had 76 rushes and 47 receptions, to go along with punt- and kick-return duties (77 returns total). He touched it 200 times last year, 123 from scrimmage. That number from scrimmage has to get to 200, whatever the Jets choose to do in the return game; Washington is simply too explosive to let him touch the ball 7.7 times per game from scrimmage. “I hate defending against players like that,” Ryan said last week. “He had six touchdowns on 73 carries last year. That number has to go up — drastically. And it will.”
