ROOKIE JOSH FREEMAN SAVES THE DAY IN TAMPA BAY

josh-freeman-hall-of-fame

Josh Freeman was the other first round quarterback taken earlier this year. He didn’t seem to be in line for much work this year as the third quarterback coming into the season. Seven losses later, the rookie found himself at the helm for the Bucs.

Freeman’s first game wasn’t very good, but local writers thought it was promising. Though, the second game for the rookie wasn’t exactly the ideal scenario for breaking in a quarterback. Tampa Bay took on the Green Bay Packers at home and ended up winning in a shootout. The Bucs got their first win on the strength of a 14 for 31 effort from Freeman with 205 yards and three touchdowns. The last TD came with 4:14 left in the fourth quarter to put Tampa up by three.

Clearly, Freeman has gotten the result that Byron Leftwich and Josh Johnson couldn’t. But then again, they’re still Byron Leftwich and Josh Johnson. The key play in the game came on a 3rd and 7 at the Green Bay 42 yard line. If the Bucs didn’t convert, they would’ve had to punt with a five point deficit. Instead, Freeman chucked the ball to Michael Clayton who had drawn Al Harris in single coverage. Harris wasn’t tracking the ball and Clayton made an adjustment on an underthrown ball for a 29 yard catch. Tampa got a first down on that play and later scored on 4th down. The effort had the Tampa Bay press going wild. Here’s an excerpt from the Tampa Tribune:

They had been saying just such things for weeks at One Buc Place while we waited for Freeman to take his turn. They said he had an attitude to go with his arm, that he would take chances downfield instead of dink-and-dunk. They said he would be mobile enough to keep plays alive. They said mistakes wouldn’t rattle him. They were right.

It’s clear that this writer is drunk on victory. Yes, Freeman performed admirably and he should get credit for the win. But it’s a little too early for his Hall of Fame induction. Freeman has the physical skills but he will certainly face adversity in upcoming games. Kellen Winslow was his leading receiver in this game followed by Derrick Ward, Maurice Stovall, and Sammie Straughter. Even when Antonio Bryant returns, opponents will start to keep an eye on Winslow and Ward to force Freeman to look downfield. While Freeman may turn into a productive NFL quarterback, you can expect him to come back to earth as the Bucs face the Dolphins, Saints, and Falcons in the next three games. My prediction for next week’s line against Miami: 13 of 26 for 175 yards, one touchdown, and three interceptions.

THE BUCCANEERS ARE TOO GOOD FOR PRACTICE

Buccaneers Freeman Football

The Buccaneers are the sole winless team in the NFL. I picked them before the season to be the worst in the NFL and they’ve come through. After starting with Byron Leftwich, they may be down to their third quarterback. You’d think that the Buccaneers might go into the bye week looking to work on their game.

But you’d be wrong. Tampa Bay hasn’t practiced very much since returning from London. In fact, they’ve practiced a measly two and a half hours in the past twelve days. The worst team in the NFL won’t hit the practice field again until tomorrow. That’s bad news as the Buccaneers enter the Josh Freeman Era. Here’s what Raheem Morris had to say about the practice schedule:

“No, we set the schedule up a while ago. You make the decision long before you go into the bye week with what you are going to do, whether you are 0-7 or 7-0. That really didn’t matter. What we did (Thursday) was the preparation and the fundamental core beliefs with these guys. We got a chance to get Josh implemented to be a starter and get done what he needed to get done. We’ll come back and get two weeks of practice. We had one day (Wednesday) of preparation, and we’ll come back the following week and get done what we need to get done.”

The rookie quarterback will face the Packers on Sunday — yet they haven’t been game-planning for Green Bay. Freeman has tantalizing raw talent but he’s, well, extremely raw. The kid has no pocket presence and lacks awareness. He’s mobile but not fast (think Ben Roethlisberger) and he can be chased defenders if he scrambles. Freeman was in for nine plays in the Bucs last game and managed to take a delay of game penalty, took two sacks, and fumbled once. It’s going to be hilarious to see the kind of line he puts up in a full game (or before he gets pulled).

LONDON CALLING: TOM BRADY IS “THAT GUY IN A SUIT”

Patriots Football

You know that asshole that goes out of his way to make everybody feel underdressed? That’s Tom Brady. Yes, he looked sharp. But there’s a thin line between professionalism and alienating everybody around you.

The guy was wearing a $6000 suit before he goes to sleep on a seven hour flight to London. You may say, “Oh, but he’s the quarterback and a marquee player in the NFL!” And you’d be right. He’s a quarterback not James Bond. Couldn’t he have just rocked his standard TB12 hat?

Alright alright, Brady just wanted to look good for the paparazzi when the team arrived 5:35 AM at Heathrow. Judging by his conference call with the British press, the Brits don’t deify the Golden Boy as one might expect. They didn’t even ask about Gisele!

It’s not likely that Brady will be greeted with Patriots jerseys when they arrive either. Jim Donaldson of the Providence Journal reports that the most popular fan item in London seems to be a Yankees hat. The Pats are set to face the Bucs at Wembley Stadium on Sunday. It’s also interesting to note that Tampa Bay Owner Malcolm Glazer owns soccer powerhouse Manchester United as well. However, the Patriots should destroy the Buccaneers.

VIDEO: NO FUN LEAGUE NOTCHES TWO MORE EJECTIONS

Panthers Buccaneers Football

Much like Dave Chappelle’s impression of Rick James, even NFL players can be guilty of having too much fun. That was the case on Sunday as two NFL players were tossed for losing their heads.

The first ejection was in the Panthers-Bucs game. Clifton Smith was back to return a punt for the Bucs when Dante Wesley blew him up before the ball came down. Smith suffered a concussion and was unable to speak after the game due to the impact on his throat. It was clearly far too early and far too vicious of a hit on a defenseless player. Panthers coach John Fox tried to spin the situation by saying it was unintentional. Come on, guy.

James Ihedigbo of the Jets earned the second ejection of the day when he punched Buffalo tight end Derek Fine. It looks like Fine threw the first real punch. The Jets actually could have had two players sent to the showers since Marques Murrell appeared to land a punch before Ihedigbo swung.

DERRICK WARD’S HARD KNOCK LIFE IN SOUTH CENTRAL

Buccaneers Camp Football

Derrick Ward’s route from South Central to huge NFL pay day was anything but a straight line. Ward grew up in the notorious South Central area of Los Angeles. In a great piece by Martin Fennelly in the Tampa Tribune, the new Bucs running back tells how he could’ve ended up dead and laments the loss of a close friend. Ward says that he even carried a .22 pistol around with him while he was growing up.

Luckily, Ward was able to escape the violence of his neighborhood. But it wasn’t easy. His first attempt at going to school failed and he ended up as a production assistant on the set of “Friends.” Shortly thereafter, he enrolled at Ottawa University in Kansas. He went on to star at the NAIA school before being drafted in the 7th round by the Jets. Ward’s story is truly amazing, so you should check out the full article at the Tampa Tribune.

Via Tampa Tribune:

Bucs’ Who wouldn’t want this life? Derrick Ward, the Bucs’ big offseason acquisition at running back, has a contract that’s worth $17 million.

He has a big house in South Tampa with a big pool. He has been seen out on the town – well not this town – with reality TV star Khloe Kardashian.

“Khloe’s a friend, a friend,” Ward said.

He was a 1,000-yard rusher last season. He was the King of New York for one night last December. The 5-11, 228-pound Ward powered the New York Giants past the Carolina Panthers in a crucial game on national TV. Ward was unstoppable, going for 215 yards on just 15 carries.

“It was our Michael Jordan moment,” he said. “Everybody kept telling Coach [Tom] Coughlin to keep giving me the ball. I wasn’t talking to nobody. I wasn’t looking at nobody. I was just focused.”

The next day, a New York tabloid featured a cartoon of superheroes Superman and Batman looking at Ward. Superman whispers to Batman, “Hey, who’s the new guy?”

Derrick Ward, the Bucs’ new guy, friendly, soft spoken, just celebrated his 29th birthday last Sunday.

“You know, growing up, I didn’t even think I’d live to be 21,” he said.

He’ll tell young kids that when he talks to them, when he tries to reach them. He usually does. The at-risk youngsters, they start out seeing dollars and fame, but Ward will tell them what they’ve been through is nothing, nothing.

“I tell them I got a graduate degree. We originated all this. Where I came from, we invented the ‘hood.”

He comes from the killing fields of South Central Los Angeles, four words so linked gang with violence and utter hopelessness that the city of Los Angeles changed the name of the area to South Los Angeles. That didn’t change South Central.
