BETTIS: BILL COWHER WAITING TO COACH GIANTS

Now that Jerome Bettis is a “journalist,”, his quotes seem to find their way into more headlines. The Bus continued that trend when he recently spoke with Mad Dog on Sirius. Bettis told Russo that he believes that Cowher is “going to be” with the Giants. Here’s the quote:

“I believe he’s going to be with the Giants. I think that’s the team that he really coveted. This is where he always wanted to be. The Mara family, he’s been very close to them. He’s known them very well and was on the inside track, before the Giants won the Super Bowl, for that job and I think he’s holding out for that opportunity if it presents itself.”

While it’s a pretty big bombshell to drop, it doesn’t seem too unrealistic. Although, New York isn’t close to Cowher’s home in Raleigh, North Carolina and the Cowher family recently built a new home there. Still, the Giants gig is certainly one of the most coveted in sports.

It’s possible to make assumptions about why Bettis made the statement. But that’s somewhat pointless since I don’t know the context of the remarks. However, there are a few interesting aspects of Bettis’ comments. Did Cowher tell him this recently or has he known all along? Did Bettis say this to “get the ball rolling” or was he prodded to make the statement? In any case, Bettis may have unwittingly (or not) put a ton of extra heat on Tom Coughlin.

G-MEN GET JACKED UP BY CHARGERS’ FINAL DRIVE

NFL/

The Giants let one get away on Sunday against the Chargers. New York allowed San Diego to execute a 4th quarter comeback and have now dropped four straight after winning their first five.

The Giants didn’t exactly give the game away — unless you count the final drive. Eli Manning had a pretty good game and the defense played better. Brandon Jacobs was also effective though he only received 11 carries. The performances had the Giants up 17-14 with 8:58 to play. However, the Giants could only muster a field goal on their next drive and set Rivers and the Chargers up for a comeback.

In just 1:46, Rivers drove 80 yards for a score. The San Diego quarterback had one huge completion where he spotted Darren Sproles split out in man coverage. Rivers ran the play as quickly as possible and hit the speedy running back for a 21 yard pass that set up Vincent Jackson’s touchdown not he next play.

New York now sits at 5-4 and Atlanta comes to town next week. Considering the remaining schedule, the Giants need a win against the Falcons to get back on track. The next three games include Atlanta, Denver, and then Dallas. New York fans better hope they come out of that stretch having won two of three.
