VIDEO: OHLUND DESTROYS KESSEL WITH OPEN-ICE HIT

mattias_ohlund_phil_kessel_hit

Everybody was talking about Phil Kessel in the offseason. That’s because the former Boston Bruin’s salary demands got him traded to Toronto. Last night, Kessel made his debut for the Leafs and was on the wrong end of a highlight reel hit.

Kessel hadn’t played since last year’s Eastern Conference semi-finals due to a bum shoulder. He didn’t show too much rust and was on the ice for a whopping 23:50 in the game. Kessel showed a lot of speed on the play that nearly got him murdered.

In the first period, the American winger collected the puck in his own zone and darted through the neutral zone. He showed good quickness and puckhandling skills and managed to cross the blueline with a head of steam. Unfortunately for Kessel, Mattias Ohlund had him lined up.

Ohlund unleashed a ferocious open-ice hit and put Kessel on his back. The hit was completely clean as Ohlund didn’t leave his feet before making contact, use his elbow/hands, or target his opponent’s head. On the other hand, Kessel committed the cardinal sin in hockey of skating with your head down. You can check out the video of the hit below.

NHL COACH WANTS HIS PLAYERS TO FIGHT EACH OTHER

Ron Wilson Toronto Maple Leafs Coach

Ron Wilson thinks violence in the answer. His head coaching certainly hasn’t done much to inspire the Maple Leafs. They’ve amassed just one point in their first 7 games — and that point came in an overtime loss. Here’s what the Toronto head coach had to say after a recent practice:

“They have to get really mad within to bust out of this. I see it coming. It wouldn’t shock me if before the end of the week, we may have a fight or two in practice which I think would be a good kind of a elixir for us to show that we’re getting angry that we haven’t won a game up to this point.”

And if fighting isn’t the magical elixir, maybe he can pick up some magical beans. The Maple Leafs are a really, really, really bad on-ice product. Unfortunately for Torontonians, the Leafs have an astronomical average ticket price of $117.49 (USD) which is over $45 more than the second-most expensive average ticket. Ripoff, eh?

RANGERS CUT DOWN LEAFS, WIN 5TH STRAIGHT

NHL/

Coming off of a 3-0 shutout of the Ducks, the Rangers looked to extend their win streak Monday against Toronto. Ryan Callahan, who also logged the most ice time of any Ranger, scored the first goal on the power play.

The Rangers held onto a one goal lead heading into the third period before they exploded for four goals. Sean Avery tallied twice, Girardi scored his second goal of the game, and Marian Gaborik added his fifth goal of the season in the final period.  The Rangers ended up winning the game by a final score of 7-2.

New York has looked strong through the opening six games of the season. The power play looks much stronger than last year and Gaborik is living up to the hype. As usual, Lundqvist has looked strong and backup netminder Steve Valiquette even had a shutout in his one start.

It will be interesting to see how the defensive rotation plays out. The rotation has split ice time pretty evenly with Marc Staal picking up a few extra shifts at Michael Rozsival’s expense. Rangers coach John Tortorella has been relying heavily on two rookies (Gilroy and Del Zotto). If they falter, Tortorella may not have many other options.

WOULD YOU LIKE TO BUY A STANLEY CUP RING?

Earlier today, Sean Leahy tweeted that you could get a Stanley Cup Ring on eBay. It’s kind of old though. The ring is from the 1947-48 Toronto Maple Leafs Stanley Cup winning team. The description says it has 10K gold and a 50-point diamond. You can buy it now for $9500! Apparently, the guy also sells other sports rings too. He has a 2006 Tigers AL Championship ring for sale too.
