U.S.C. YOU LATER: LANE KIFFIN TAKES TROJANS GIG

Recent reports had linked Mike Riley, Jeff Fisher, Jack Del Rio and Steve Mariucci to the open USC head coaching job. Turns out that neither of those guys will take the helm for the Trojans. Tennessee coach and former USC coordinator Lane Kiffin has been tapped as the new coach at Southern California.

Unsurprisingly, Kiffin’s move was met with anger in Knoxville. Students created signs to bash the one-and-done coach and even some disparaging graffiti. Even ESPN got in on the action. Pat Forde said that “Paris Hilton has paid more dues than Lane Kiffin.” Kiffin is 12-21 in his head coaching career so it’s understandable that people are questioning all aspects of the move. That being said, Kiffin brings another “name brand” to SC and also some familiarity. Many recent recruits, including Matt Barkley and Marc Tyler, already have connections to Kiffin as he aided in their recruitment.

While USC’s coaching vacancy is filled, the ripple continues to affect the rest of the college football world. First reports out of Knoxville indicate that the Vols have their sights set on Texas defensive coordinator Will Muschamp. Muschamp is currently one of the highest-paid coordinators in college football and is the coach-in-waiting behind head man Mack Brown.

Kiffin to USC also may affect the commitments of some top recruits. USC commit and highly-rated QB Jesse Scroggins said he’d wait to finalize his commitment to the school. Additionally, Kyle Prater and Dillon Baxter were expected to join the Trojans but that’s up in the air. A move by Muschamp could affect Texas’ pursuit of top defensive prospects Jackson Jeffcoat (DE) and Jordan Hicks (LB). Hicks is currently trying to decide between Ohio State, Florida, and Florida.

THE GHOST OF REGGIE BUSH HAUNTS THE TROJANS

USC_reggie_bush_pete_carroll_lawsuit

It’s no secret that USC is one of the best semi-pro football teams in America. But it’s not easy to install such a winning tradition. If you don’t remember, the Trojans finished 6-6 at the beginning of the decade. However, it didn’t take them long to return to prominence.

Since the NFL left Los Angeles, the Southern California football team has been the main entity to fill the void. There’s only so much room on the Lakers bandwagon, ya know? But wait, would the people of Los Angeles ever root for a mediocre to bad team? Of course not. So that meant USC had to adjust their payroll to increase the talent level. Enter: Lloyd Lake and Reggie Bush.

Don’t know who Lloyd Lake is? You’re not alone. He’s the dude that decided it would be worth paying for Reggie Bush’s marketing rights while he was still in college. Allegedly, Lake had an agreement to represent Bush in exchange for items including:

The alleged gifts include a rent-free house for the Bush family and money to purchase a customized 1996 Chevrolet Impala that Bush drove while in school.

Now, Lake’s suit against Bush and his family is set to go to court and could blow the lid off of USC’s poorly managed boosters. Bush already settled out of court with Lake’s partner and there’s a decent chance he could do the same with Lake. If he doesn’t, USC could end up with a huge black eye. The funny part is that Lake is probably most disappointed that he overpaid for Bush’s marketing rights in the first place.

USC has recently taken heat for O.J. Mayo allegedly receiving gifts and current Trojan running back Joe McKnight has been fingered for riding around in his girlfriend’s Land Rover that she got for free. It really shouldn’t be that surprising. Hell, just look at the running backs USC has managed to sign (concurrently) in recent years.

PHOTOS: MARK SANCHEZ SEEN WITH SEXY SPRINTER

usc-jennifer-mueller-track-hot

Mark Sanchez has to be enjoying the ride so far. On the field, he became the first rookie QB to win his first three games and took home the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Month Award. Away from the gridiron, Sanchez has already done a photoshoot for GQ and has locked up an endorsement deal with Toyota. Things are going well for the Jets QB… but what about his love life?

The first reports in New York said that he had hooked up with the model from his GQ shoot, Hilary Rhoda. Within weeks of that rumor, Rhoda was spotted at a midtown bar with local sleaze Sean Avery. Maybe Mark was too busy to have a woman in his life.

The New York Post reported over the weekend that Mark Sanchez had re-united with blonde bombshell Jennifer Mueller. The 20-year-old Mueller grew up in New Jersey where she ran track and currently attends USC.

USC RB STAFON JOHNSON HAS EMERGENCY SURGERY

USC Johnson Hurt Football

USC running back Stafon Johnson was injured in a weight room accident on Monday. The senior was using the bench press when the bar slipped from his right hand and fell onto his neck. Johnson was taken to California Hospital Medical Center. Pete Carroll said that Johnson couldn’t speak after the mishap but “was OK.” The report notes that Johnson had a spotter when the accident occurred. Even though the Trojans have a number of quality backs, losing Johnson will still hurt them. Johnson had 246 carries and 14 touchdowns the past two seasons for USC.

USC QB MITCH MUSTAIN MOONLIGHTS AS A PUNTER

55885662

You know your team is loaded when your third quarterback has can contribute on special teams. It’s even more impressive when that player is Mitch Mustain who was ranked the #1 QB in the nation by Scout and #2 by Rivals in 2006. Matthew Stafford was the other guy ranked #1 or #2.  Mustain was recently punting before the Ohio State game and USC coach Pete Carroll was impressed by his ability. Apparently, USC already has issues at the punter position. Carroll probably should have spent his time last week coming up with a way to beat Washington. Maybe Mustain will get a shot next week… at quarterback.

CUSE TO FACE USC & NOTRE DAME AT MEADOWLANDS

Unfortunately, New York City is a vacuum of college football. Does Columbia count? All signs point to no. Rutgers is somewhat close… and Syracuse is a little farther. Apparently, the new Meadowlands stadium will help bring college football to the City. Reports indicate that Syracuse will add three “home” games at the Meadowlands over the next seven years. I can tell you right now that SC will smash Syracuse in 2012. That’s going to be very, very ugly. But hey, at least the ugly football will be counter-balanced by the beautiful USC Song Girls.

Via Miami Herald:

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Syracuse has agreed to play three home games against Notre Dame and Southern California over the next seven years in the new stadium at the Meadowlands.

Two people with knowledge of the agreement, speaking on condition of anonymity because the official announcement has not been made, said the Orange will face USC in 2012 and Notre Dame in 2014 and 2016.

The new privately owned $1.6 billion stadium is being built by the Giants and the Jets of the NFL. It is scheduled to open next season.

The Jets and Giants have scheduled a news conference for Tuesday to announce the games.

The new stadium will seat about 80,000 people, 30,000 more than capacity at the Carrier Dome, Syracuse’s home field.

MATT BARKLEY GUNS FOR GLAMOUR OF USC QB GIG

The names include: Carson Palmer, Matt Leinart, Mark Sanchez. Hell, you can even throw in Matt Cassel and John David Booty to some degree. There’s no question that being the USC quarterback thrusts a young man into the spotlight. Since the low-point in the 90’s, Southern California has been a powerhouse under Pete Carroll.

Predictably, the Trojans have some great QBs on the payroll roster even after losing Mark Sanchez to the NFL. SC has Mitch Mustain (former PARADE HS Player of the Year that transferred from Arkansas), Aaron Corp (highly touted in-state recruit that redshirted in ‘07), and Matt Barkley (top ranked prospect in 2009 by ESPN). Carroll has the luxury of options here and that’s a good thing. Corp recently went down with a left knee injury somewhat opening the door for Barkley and Mustain.

There’s a chance that Barkley could eventually seize the job for good. Barkley was the first freshman quarterback to start at Mater Dei High School since Todd Marinovich. In that span, Matt Leinart passed through the same high school. He was named Gatorade HS Player of the Year before he was even a senior. The position is Barkley’s… at some point in the near future.

The Trojans head coach also affirmed that Mustain was the third quarterback behind both Corp and Barkley. With Corp out, Barkley was given all of the first team snaps. After a scrimmage last week, Pete Carroll had nothing be positive things to say about Barkley. The SC head man said that Barkley had made “tremendous impressions.”

Via OC Register:

LOS ANGELES – USC freshman quarterback Matt Barkley might not have the keys to the Trojans offense quite yet, but it’s clear he is at least in the driver’s seat.

And making himself comfortable.

USC coach Pete Carroll did nothing to diminish the significance of Barkley’s performance in a 72-play scrimmage Friday afternoon.

“All and all this was the big day to see Matt, and Matt handled himself beautifully,” Carroll said.

Barkley, the national high school player of the year at Mater Dei, completed 10 of 17 passes for 120 yards with one touchdown and one interception in his first major test since assuming the top spot on the USC depth chart after Aaron Corp cracked his left fibula. Barkley even put an exclamation mark on the afternoon with a late 8-yard touchdown scamper.

“It opened up wide like the Red Sea,” Barkley said of his TD dash.

If only Mitch Mustain could be as easily moved.

On an afternoon that reflected Barkley’s position on the depth chart and the confidence Carroll and quarterbacks coach Jeremy Bates have in him, Mustain showed no signs of going away quietly.

Mustain, a high profile transfer from Arkansas, working with the second- and third-string offenses, completed 14 of 16 passes for 154 yards, 28 of them coming on a touchdown strike to De’Von Flournoy. Mustain completed his first eight passes.

“I’m not here for the hell of it, but it is what it is right now and I’m going to keep fighting for it and make them make the decision,” Mustain said.

But all indications pointed to that decision already being made.

“Anything can happen, but right now he’s still behind Matt and Aaron,” Carroll said.

Even Mustain acknowledged Carroll and his staff have cast their lot with Barkley. Only Barkley worked with the first team offense Friday, and the freshman was given additional reps with the second team as well.

“I think they’ve got something they want to accomplish,” Mustain said. “Matt’s done a good job so they want to keep developing him, and I going to take the reps I get and capitalize on them.”

Said Bates: “Right now Barkley needs all the reps. He’s 18 years old, he’s a freshman. We’re going to give him as many reps as we possibly can. Mitch has had a lot of reps so we feel like we need to get Matt up to speed.”

Barkley made the most of those snaps, taking charge of the team from the opening snap and seeming to grow in confidence as the scrimmage wore on. In third quarter, he connected with David Ausberry for a 19-yard touchdown. Ausberry had three receptions for 73 yards. Flournoy had three catches for 55 yards.

“With the plays we have I would feel comfortable playing a game right now,” Barkley said.

Said Carroll: “All in all he made tremendous impressions here.”
