RANGERS GET ROUGHED UP BY CANUCKS

NHL/

As Marian Gaborik goes, so go the Rangers. The Rangers star winger was held without a point and the Blueshirts lost another game. New York is 9-2-1 when Gaborik gets his name on the scoresheet but have lost all four games where he was pointless or out of the lineup. After piling up seven straight wins, the Rangers have now lost seven of their last nine games.

It was actually a fairly good effort by the Rangers. They should have been winning coming into the third period but they couldn’t score on a four minute power play to end the second. Unfortunately, they hung Lundqvist out to dry and allowed the Canucks to score three goals (one empty netter) on twelve shots in the third. The Rangers only managed to take five shots in the final frame.

For me, there are two distinct issues the Rangers will have to deal with. Without secondary scoring, they’re very easy to gameplan against. Playing on the road means that opposing teams can match up their best defensive players with Gaborik’s line. As a result, the Rangers are a poor 3-4-1 away from MSG. The other area of concern is the blueline. Luckily, Michael Del Zotto and Matt Gilroy have proven to be extremely valuable. That’s good. But it masks the lack of development from Marc Staal and Dan Girardi. They haven’t been bad but they certainly haven’t lived up to their billing as the first pair. While Redden and Rozsival have actually been slightly better lately, they’re still playing like they should be the last men in the rotation. The two veterans’ time on ice against the Canucks (16:38, 15:17) seems to indicate Tortorella is finally coming to terms with that.

Below are my other notes from the game. For a different perspective, you can check out LoHud’s game notes as well.

  • The Rangers “won” the second period with tenacious forechecking and excellent offensive zone puck possession. Other than that, they did little to deserve victory. They couldn’t generate many good scoring chances even with a ton of power play time.
  • Vaclav Prospal continued his inspired play and looks bad ass with his black eye/cut.
  • Artem Anisimov had a moment of brilliance coming through the neutral zone which and the rush nearly resulted in a Higgins goal. The kid shows flashes of immense skill and hockey awareness at times.
  • Ales Kotalik continues to be a key trigger man for the Rangers. He seems to have a Brett Hull-like ability to find open spots on the ice and set himself up for one-time chances.
  • Chris Drury continues to be absolutely invisible. His power play assist came when he received a pass near the hash marks, stick handled a few feet up the boards, before just dropping it to Dubinsky in the corner. Dubinsky did all of the work with an excellent centering pass.
  • Toward the end of the game, Michal Rozsival took a garbage hooking call where it appeared that Henrik Sedin actually latched onto his stick before flopping. The Canucks put the game away with a power play goal and John Tortorella made his way over to Rozsival to give him an earful. However, it seemed like Rozsival didn’t want to hear what he had to say and his body language seemed somewhat defiant.
  • Wade Redden was absolutely horrible coming out of his own end tonight. He turned the puck over to cause the first goal. Later in the game, he freaked out and threw the puck in front of the net to his defensive partner when facing pressure. On the same possession, he got it back and missed the breaking winger’s stick with an errant pass that went for icing.
  • Michael Del Zotto is indeed the truth. The two plays that stood out to me were both in the first period. He made one 60 foot saucer pass that was perfectly weighted to drop on the recipient’s stick. The other play was very close to the beginning of the game when he had pressure heading up ice near the side of his own net. Instead of trying to force it, he spun around and softly dumped it behind the net so his defensive partner could pick it up. He could teach Redden a thing or two about that.

RANGERS, GABORIK SHOOT DOWN COYOTES

Coyotes Rangers Hockey

The Rangers came into Monday night’s game with a fresh three-game losing streak. The poor play culminated with the benching of Brandon Dubinsky and Christopher Higgins for the second half of the last game in Montreal. Clearly, John Tortorella was sending his team a message about their level of effort.

Getting back on track was no easy task with the Coyotes in town. Normally, that would be a joke but Phoenix had started 6-3-0 with Ilya Bryzgalov playing like the best goalie in the NHL. However, the Rangers ignored the visiting team’s hype and quickly put up the first goal of the game on an Artem Anisimov spin-o-rama. Gaborik added to the lead with a beautiful one-timer that was perfectly set up by Brandon Dubinsky. And just like that, the Rangers were cruising.

Initially, the second period was more of the same with Vaclav Prospal and Gaborik netting goals to make the score 4-0. That’s when the Rangers started to relax and the Coyotes scored two goals in the final five minutes of the second period. In the third period, the Rangers put the game away on an Enver Lisin goal.

The first line of Prospal, Gaborik, and Lisin is proving to be quite the combination. Gaborik’s two goals were both scored on quick-release snapshot lasers. The second goal came on a one-timer where Gaborik picked the upper right corner of the net with a perfect shot. While Gaborik is the gunner, Vaclav Prospal might be providing the Rangers with the most bang for their buck. Chris Drury continued his absolutely putrid play. Other than being invisible, he was -1 and picked up a penalty. The former first-line center is essentially a third line player now.

The soap opera on the Rangers’ blueline showed no signs of slowing down on Monday. Rookie Michael Del Zotto continued his scorching hot play with two assists. After getting an earful from John Tortorella, Dan Girardi and Marc Staal played poorly again. Girardi was -1 and Staal was -2 in a game that the Rangers won by three goals. The two defensemen were victimized at the end of the second period on a Coyotes short-handed goal. It’s not good when the team’s two best defensive defensemen are constantly out of position. Surprisingly, Michal Roszival had the most ice time while Matt Gilroy had the last amount of ice team for a defenseman.

RANGERS KNOCK OFF KINGS, ASCEND TO TOP OF NHL

Kings Rangers Hockey

The New York Rangers won their sixth straight game on Wednesday to push them to 12 points. That ties them with the Penguins for the most points in the NHL.

Vaclav Prospol netted two goals while Marian Garborik scored his sixth of the season and Brian Boyle tallied his first. Marian Gaborik is now tied with Mike Richards (who had a hat trick in his first game) for the most goals in the NHL. Aaron Voros didn’t get many shifts, but he did fight Los Angeles thug Sean O’Donnell.  Standout rookie defenseman Michael Del Zotto had two more assists — one of which came on the power play.

Yahoo’s Puck Daddy named Henrik Lundqvist the number one star of the night. Handsome Hank had 34 saves and the Rangers were even outshot 10-1 in the third period. The best save may have been the stop of Teddy Purcell’s rebound chance off of a 2-on-1.

The Rangers look like they should continue their winning ways unless they’re hurt by a lack of depth on the blueline.  I like Del Zotto and Gilroy, but I doubt both rookies will be successful playing veteran minutes for a full 82 game season plus playoffs.

RANGERS INK VACLAV PROSPAL AT REASONABLE PRICE

Vaclav Prospal is a New York Ranger. This is one of Sather’s better moves of the offseason. While not an impact player, Prospal is an economical option that produces. He also enjoyed success under current Rangers coach John Tortorella in Tampa Bay. The Post speculates that he will be given the opportunity to win the first line center job if Dubinsky can’t perform.

Via New York Post:

As contract negotiations with Brandon Dubinsky have hit a speed bump, the Rangers have signed 34-year-old free agent forward Vinnie Prospal to a one-year, $1.1 million deal, The Post has learned.

Prospal, who became unrestricted when the Lightning bought him out of the final three seasons of the four-year, $14 million contract he had signed with Tampa Bay last summer, is most effective on the wing but also can play center.

The plan at the moment is to give Dubinsky the opportunity to claim the center position on the first line that will feature Marian Gaborik on the right and either Sean Avery or Christopher Higgins on the left. But if Dubinsky cannot handle the assignment, Prospal, who is strong on the puck, probably would get the call.

Prospal, who played for head coach John Tortorella before and after the Lightning’s 2004 Cup-winning season in which he was in Anaheim, recorded 45 points (19-26) last year. The 12-year NHL veteran scored 33 goals two years ago for the Lightning and Flyers and recording 80 points and 55 assists with Tampa Bay in 2005-06.

Dubinsky, a Group II free agent, and the Rangers have been in contract talks for a number of weeks, but it now seems as if the parties are not going to reach an agreement on a multi-year contract. Unless Dubinsky can attract an offer sheet on which the Blueshirts would have the right of first refusal, it appears as if he will play the season on his one-year qualifying offer of $698,500.
