LIVE INACTION: ESPN LOS ANGELES LIVE VIDEO FAIL

shelley_smith_espn_los_angeles_live_3

Yesterday, Pete Carroll held a press conference to talk about his resignation from USC. ESPN Los Angeles had a live video feed up — presumably to cover the event. However, that’s not exactly what they were streaming to viewers.

ESPN’s Shelley Smith was paired with the crew that had the live feed from Los Angeles. But apparently the crew and Smith had no idea that they were broadcasting live on the internet. Smith could be heard talking to producers while she unwittingly stood in front of thousands of internet viewers. She must’ve been waiting for ESPN to cut her into SportsCenter for a segment saying:

“We’re gonna hear Pete and then Golic’s gonna tee me up? Ok.”
“10 seconds!”

Shortly after that, the video feed went blank and displayed a test pattern. I’m not sure what ESPN intended to broadcast since I found the link on twitter. Below are a couple more awkward shots of Shelley Smith and the test pattern.

VIDEO: SCARY SCUDERI HIP CHECK FLIPS CHIMERA

scuderi_hip_check_chimera

In what is seemingly becoming a regular occurrence, another NHL player was leveled by a scary hit last night. The Blue Jackets’ Jason Chimera was skating down the right side of the offensive zone when Rob Scuderi cut him down with a low hip check.

The term “hip check” is used loosely though.  Scuderi hits Chimera so low that the play could definitely be interpreted as tripping.  As you can see, the low hit flips Jason Chimera and he seems to land on the ice with his face/head.  No penalty was called on Scuderi for the hit.

The no-call is somewhat understandable because this was not a textbook tripping play.  However, the technique employed in the hit should make this an easy call for the referees.  Typically, hip checks pin an offensive player’s mid-section to the boards or the aggressor simply takes a skater out with a hit ABOVE the knees.  The hit in question could be classified as either tripping or roughing.  However, the NHL has specifically created a rule called “clipping” — which I admit I’ve never seen called in any game I’ve played in or watched.  By rule, Scuderi should have been penalized for the low hit and even could have received a major penalty and a game misconduct.

RODALLEGA RIPS VILLA WITH VICIOUS VOLLEY

I didn’t know who Hugo Rodallega was until yesterday. I now know that he’s a soccer player with a sweet name and a sick shot. Rodallega was denied early in the match on a questionable clearance and decided to score anyway. The 24 year-old Colombian tried his luck from about 30 yards out with an impromptu volley. The thunderous strike proved impossible to stop and went over the goalie before dipping under the bar. Other ways to describe the goal: cracker, stunning strike, cracker, miraculous effort, once-in-a-lifetime strike, spectacular volley, etc. You can see the video of the goal below.

FORMER KNICKERBOCKER OFF HIS ROCKER

If you didn’t know, Stephon Marbury has been broadcasting live video of himself via JustinTV and UStream. I tried watching his first 24 hour broadcast last week and could only manage to keep it open for about 15-20 minutes. In that span, Starbury went through his morning routine and was stretching and doing crunches in front of his camera. A lot of the broadcast was filled with a lot nothingness but Marbury didn’t disappoint.

Later in the “show,” Marbury started crying. He also danced in front of the mirror in his bedroom. One of the more interesting quotes from the broadcast was when Starbury said, “No, I’m not the best player in the N.B.A. Kobe Bryant is the best player. I don’t care about the N.B.A. Those days are over with.” I don’t know if he’s on drugs or actually crazy, but he’s definitely not right. In addition to his broadcast, his tweets have been bonkers as well. He’s even replied to himself in the past few days… many times (though that may be due to the UStream or Justin.TV chat function). The crying video and dancing picture are after the jump.
