FLAT BACK FIVE: COLE’S SEX SCANDAL ROCKS ENGLAND

Ashley Cole sex scandal

Two weeks ago, we wrote about how John Terry had a Tiger Woods-like sex scandal. Well, add another English soccer player to that list. Fellow defender Ashley Cole is currently being killed by the British press. That’s because he may have cheated on his wife with as many as five different women.

If you didn’t know, the Coles are quite the power couple. Cheryl was part of a group called Girls Aloud and now has a very successful solo career. Her husband Ashley used to play for Arsenal and now plays for Chelsea. He’s also appeared in 77 games for England. Cole injured his ankle in a game earlier this month and since then his life has gone into a tailspin.

Ashley Cole’s trouble began a little over a week ago when model Sonia Wild claimed that he sent her racy text messages. He was able to shrug it off by saying that a buddy had sent the pictures from an old phone that he had given him. Unfortunate for Ashley, he didn’t have any good excuses for the five women that have claimed to have had sex with him. Here’s how his encounter with American Ann Corbitt was described:

Miss Corbitt said: ‘All in all the sex lasted three or four hours. I was very taken aback by how intimate he was and how needy he was.

‘He was a creative and adventurous lover. At the end he was satisfied and so was I.’

But she said when he raised the issue of a condom, he said he didn’t have one as he wasn’t ‘banking on sex’.

So they had unprotected sex that night and again the following morning.

At least Corbitt gave him a solid review. And hey, he wasn’t even banking on sex. So far, Cole’s hit list includes a political aide, a glamour model, a hairdresser, a secretary, and another glamour model.

To make matters worse, Cole’s club team, Chelsea, even got involved in an attempt to protect him. PR man Steve Atkins tried to help Cole eliminate the rumor about his rendezvous with Corbitt. So the soccer player may face a suspension for getting the team involved in his mess. Cheryl Cole is said to have broken up with Ashley by text message.

THINGS JUST GOT MORE AWKWARD, SEXY FOR ENGLAND

Ashley Cole is a world class defender for Chelsea and also plays for the English national team. But his chances to play in the World Cup may be in jeopardy. Cole broke his ankle this week and may not recover in time. He’s also dealing with a “sexting” scandal and his absence may amplify other “sexy” problems for England.

Cole made news again this week when it was reported that he sent nude photos of himself to a model. That’s not a good thing because he’s married to Cheryl Cole. Sonia Wild claims that she received text correspondence including pictures of the soccer player “in all of his glory” for nearly a month. Cole claims that the texts were sent by a “friend” that had been given one of Cole’s old phones. That makes sense… sort of, not really. So maybe his buddy would send the sexy pictures to get reciprocation from Ms. Wild. But that doesn’t really explain why Cole took them in the first place and then how he forgot they were on his phone.

Aside from the sexting scandal, Cole’s injury creates a hole in the English defense. That means that Wayne Bridge may get the call to fill his role. You may remember Wayne Bridge as the man whose girlfriend cheated on him with multiple teammates including John Terry. FIFA President Sepp Blatter had an interesting take on Terry’s boning of a teammate’s girlfriend saying:

“Listen, this is a special approach in the Anglo-Saxon countries. If this had happened in, let’s say, Latin countries, then I think he would have been applauded.”

When news of the affair broke a couple weeks ago, Terry was subsequently stripped of his captaincy of the English national team. Why does all of this matter? Because now Wayne Bridge may be lining up right next to Terry in England’s back four during the World Cup… all because of Ashley Cole’s ankle.

BECKHAM SEZ HE’LL BE BACK IN MLS, BUY TEAM

58990754

You probably didn’t know it, but MLS played their championship game last night. In an anticlimactic finish, Real Salt Lake defeated the L.A. Galaxy on penalty kicks. RSL won both the semifinal and final on penalty kicks and had finished the regular season with 11 wins, 12 losses, and seven draws.

The result also meant the last of David Beckham in America — at least until next season. The English midfielder had an assist and also scored on his penalty kick in the shootout. Landon Donovan tallied once during the game but failed to convert his penalty kick which doomed the Galaxy. Beckham will now take four weeks off before he goes on loan to AC Milan. But Beckham thinks he’ll be back according to the Seattle Times:

David Beckham promised he will be indeed be back in MLS next season – and that he will eventually exercise his option to own one of the league’s teams.

“Of course,” he said of returning in 2010, after his limped through the Los Angeles Galaxy’s upset loss to Real Salt Lake in the league’s championship match. “I’ve said I’ll be back, and I will.”

Beckham will finish out the season in Italy as he gets in shape for the World Cup this summer. There’s no word on whether or not he’ll sport an improved haircut when he reports to Milan on December 28th.

HENRY’S HELPING HAND SENDS FRANCE TO WORLD CUP

SOCCER-WORLD/FRANCE

On Wednesday, Thierry Henry added another memorable moment to his illustrious career. The French striker may not have many years left in the tank, and he may even join the New York Red Bulls in 2010. However, the Frenchman is still a quality player for his national team. Without him, they may not have advanced to the World Cup Finals.

Henry helped get the French team to South Africa on what appeared to be a hand ball in the box. It allowed Henry to bring the ball down and William Gallas ended up scoring a goal. The tally tied the game at 1-1 but meant that France would advance on an aggregate score of 2-1. France had beaten 1-0 in Dublin on Saturday. Henry had no problem admitting the infraction saying:

“I will be honest, it was a hand ball. But I’m not the ref. I played it. The ref allowed it. That’s a question you should ask him.”

Ireland will miss its second straight World Cup. Makes you feel better about USA, doesn’t it?

RICH ASS SOUTH AFRICAN TRIBE SHOPS SOCCER FIELDS

The South African President and FIFA President

The South African President and FIFA President

Are you the general manager of a national soccer team looking for a place to practice during the World Cup? If you said yes, then the Bafokeng tribe of northern South Africa has a great deal for you.

The tribe has seven flawless soccer fields in Phokeng with accommodations worth of a “high-class hotel” in progress. The land is also 4000 feet above sea level which will aid in training. Nevermind that it smells like manure and there are lions around (they’ve got an electric fence for them).

The tribe plans to rent out the sports center to a national team for the upcoming 2010 World Cup. Right now, the Bafokeng are targeting England. Though English officials said the facility is not their top choice.

But it’s not like the Bafokeng people are poor — their land produces 55% of the world’s platinum. In addition to the practice facility, they also own a stadium that will be one of the 10 used in the World Cup.

ENGLAND BOSS BACKS BECKHAM’S WORLD CUP BID

58258533

Fabio Capello has been clear that David Beckham is still under consideration for the England World Cup squad. The England coach said that Beckham is “one of the most important players.” So Beckham still may get a shot to play for England in the 2010 World Cup. It’s been a long road back for the soccer player and part-time model. Beckham stepped down as captain of England in 2006 and was dropped from the team by Steve McClaren in August 2006. He didn’t appear for his home country again until May 2007. In order to make the World Cup team, Capello has been clear that Beckham needs to stay in shape after the MLS season ends. So that means a move to a European club for the winter is nearly inevitable. Luckily for Beckham, AC Milan director Umberto Gandini has expressed interest in bringing Beckham back.

SOCCER STAR’S MUSCLE INCLUDES MURDER SUSPECT

messibodyguard.crop

You probably don’t know who Lionel Messi is. But right now, he’s arguably the best soccer player on the planet. The young Argentinian is a superstar for Barcelona in La Liga and also plays for his national team. Argentina takes on Brazil this week in a World Cup qualifying match. So Messi is being guarded by a crew that includes Ariel Pugliese. He’s nicknamed “The Worm” and was investigated for the murder of Tigre fan that took place after a soccer game in 2007.

Via The Spoiler:

As Lionel Messi prepares for Argentina’s World Cup Qualifier with Brazil this weekend, he will be under the watchful eye of a burly chap named Ariel Pugliese. He may look like run-of-the-mill muscle for hire, but the brave soles at Argentinean newspaper Ole have exposed him as a leading figure in one of the country’s most violent football holigan factions.

Nicknamed ‘The Worm’, Pugliese is a senior member of terribly scary hooligan organisation Los Perales de Nueva Chicago, and he has a lengthy criminal record. He was investigated in the murder of Marcelo Cejas, a Tigre fan who was assassinated after a game in 2007.

To make matters worse, Pugliese might have trouble following Messi through airport security, as he has a bullet lodged in his body from one of his many football-related acts of violence. How fun!

Ole believe Pugliese may have scored his job with the Albicelestes thanks to links with team physio Dady, who was also a member of Los Perales de Nueva Chicago.

Unsurprisingly, the AFA are now being questioned about their decision to place one fo the world’s best footballers under the protection of a dangerous lunatic with a history of firearms and unbridled violence.

USA’S DONOVAN SICK OF MEXICANS BUT NOT FROM THEM

Landon Donovan is sick of Mexicans. If you saw the USA-Mexico World Cup Qualifier, you’d know why. The best American soccer player of all time attempted to take a corner kick while being pelted with ‘basura y bebidas’ (trash and drinks). One journalist noted that human waste was included in the shower of refuse. Classy. In any case, it was recently revealed that Lando has H1N1 better known as swine flu. He did not contract the sickness in Mexico and likely got it from Galaxy staffers.

Via FanHouse:

File this under the worst week ever for U.S. soccer’s all-time leading goal scorer Landon Donovan. As if losing to Mexico 2-1 on Wednesday wasn’t bad enough, Thursday night Donovan told Sports Illustrated’s Grant Wahl that he tested positive for the H1N1 flu virus.

Donovan told Wahl that he felt ill before the U.S. team arrived in Mexico City for its CONCACAF World Cup qualifier on Wednesday and most likely contracted the virus in the United States. Still, he soldiered through the sickness and played all 90 minutes in the altitude and heat of Azteca Stadium, sending the through ball that set up Charlie Davies ninth minute goal which gave the U.S. a brief 1-0 lead.

Central and South American soccer have already been affected by the swine flu outbreak, with the Mexican league shutting its doors briefly to help quell the spread of the virus earlier this year. There was also controversy when South American club teams balked at traveling to Mexico during the height of the panic for international club tournaments.

Still, Donovan’s contraction of the virus is the first time it’s seemed to cross the border into American soccer circles, and it makes him one of the highest profile players in any sport to be diagnosed with the virus. The Los Angeles Times reports that he likely contracted it from some Los Angeles Galaxy staffers.

That said, it doesn’t appear to be life threatening for Donovan, who says he might even play this weekend for the Los Angeles Galaxy when they take on the Seattle Sounders.
