Maria Sharapova continues her comeback in Toronto at the Rogers Cup. Before the tournament, she stopped at a Tag Heuer event to promote her sponsor. In the first round, she faces fellow Russian Nadia Petrova. Sharapova holds a 7-1 career record against Petrova. Maria Sharapova was saying it felt good to be on top of the world again.
Of course, the former world No. 1 wasn’t talking about tennis. She was perched atop the CN Tower, where she was promoting next week’s Rogers Cup by helping out last night at the draw.
“I think this is the highest peak I’ve been at in my career,” Sharapova deadpanned.
Sharapova, now ranked 49th in the world, picked numbers for non-seeded players after the seeds got their positions.
She didn’t seem too concerned she drew a first-round match against fellow Russian Nadia Petrova, the 10th seed in the tournament. Sharapova has a 7-1 career record against Petrova, including two wins this year.
“She’s always a tough opponent,” said Sharapova. “She has a big game, with powerful shots. I have to be ready.”
The 6-foot-2 media darling, who has been on the cover of both sports and fashion magazines, has finished in the top 10 every year since 2004, but that streak is at risk this season.
Sharapova is trying to put her game back together after a shoulder injury forced her to miss nine months. She came back in May and has yet to win a tournament.
“I’ve played really good players. I’ve got some good wins, I’ve had some tough matches,” said Sharapova. “It’s basically everything I could have asked for. I’m still building up the strength in the shoulder and my body after not playing for a long time.
